Hi guys, this is a thread to discuss the new cards and archetypes that we're testing for our Cubes. It's more general than SCD or MCD, and I think it'll be a great way to discuss new Cube trends and experiments.
So the first card I'm going to talk about is Standstill. This is a card that I've had off for a while, and I recently reintroduced it to my Cube while cutting Treasure Cruise, which was underwhelming. The first few games of Standstill have been very positive, with many players playing it after landing a manland or Planeswalker. Of course, there have been some dumb games where one player resolves Standstill and neither players casts any spells, but watching how my playgroup tries to play around the card and the neat decks that have been drafted as a result have been very interesting to see.
I've been testing Oath of Druids over Channel, and Oath has been in more maindeck play than Channel ever has. It's usually in a Planeswalker control deck, or used in conjunction with cards like Sneak Attack and Through the Breach. Overall, I'd highly recommend Oath to players wishing to diversify Green's portfolio.
Yeah, Oath of Druids is pretty sweet. I think that there's now more than enough support in order to run the card properly in the cube.
About experimentations, I used to run Richard Garfield, Ph.D. to support some weird infinite combo interactions like Painter's Savant/Grindstone, Time Vault/Voltaic Key, Rest in Peace/Helm of Obedience and some more depending on color combinaisons. It was fun. Really unpredictable though. Also, really experimented guys in my group that use to play Mind Magic a lot sometimes just pulled a rabbit out of a hat to save them in the most unexpected way. But most of time, it was a bit too slow and unconsistant and we ended up cutting it to make room for some other cards. But ultimatly, we had a lot of fun with the card and I recommend cube managers how hasn't try it yet to take shot at it, at least just for the fun of it. It's really got with stuff like Spellskite and Lighting Greaves because those can be part of the combo and can also protect Richard against removals.
Jokulhaups was a card I experimented with because it seemed too awesome to not run, and it was. For me Jokulhaups is a staple if you are supporting that deck, and is worth running for the name alone.
I recently added Oath of Druids (and Through the Breach) as well. The fatty cheat decks have been so good I'm convinced it's worth going all-in on especially in smaller cubes where you can put together combos more consistently. I was running the Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger/Kozilek, Butcher of Truth eldrazi duo but am now going with Emrakul as my payoff card instead (dropped OG Kozi).
I think Rancor and Curse of Predation are great cards to make Green a viable support color for Aggro decks. I'm also testing the new Nissa as well, and her second ability also seems good for decks hoping to go wide.
I've liked Standstill in cube. Often makes people play terribly, and if you have any kind of superior board position it's hard not to draw 3. Rarely is your opponent benefiting unless you are ******* up.
I used to have Standstill in my cube A long time ago. It seemed alright but I cut it in favor of more standard cards as I built my cube up. I've always wanted to put Oath of Druids in but I can't think of a single cut I could make in green that feels like a good cut for it.
You're running a few more ramp spells than me, so I'd be tempted to cut Harrow or Wild Growth maybe, We've only just started running Oath of Druids and it hasn't shown up yet in a deck. I sympathise, cuts are still hard at 540, I'd love to try out Great Oak Guardian, Collected Company and Worldly Tutor which you've got but I don't know what to cut.
