I've been running Awakening Zone for quite some time now and am pretty happy with it. The additional mana makes this a lot worse for ramping. However, unlike Zone, it does create actual threats. Even if they are 1/1s, getting one of them each turn can add up and provide a serious force when the game goes long. And just like Zone, it works great with Stax effects, Skullclamp, Opposition, etc.
The card also has two more minor upsides. Devoid means it survives Ugin, the Spirit Dragon and All is Dust. The last ability can fetch an Eldrazi if you drafted one for your deck. Oh, and the tokens can be used to cast any of these cards earlier than normal.
This card is not for smaller cubes, but I still like it.
I am pleasantly surprised with this card. It's much better than the rumored version that popped up a few days ago now that it has the sacrifice ability to fetch an Eldrazi card. I will try it out and maybe stick All is Dust back into my cube if there's enough cubable Eldrazi. To boot that art is so sweet.
Big fan of this. Having scions being able to trade and present a threat in combat is an upgrade worth the cost over Awakening Zone in itself, and it even gets to tutor up your win condition (and/or All is Dust if things are hairy) while providing you the mana to cast it. So far, this is my favorite non-planeswalker of the set.
An interesting card for sure. I can see it being a little slow and durdly – the classic problem of the do-nothing four drop – but also a great role player in at least two of my favorite archetypes. Maybe I'll try it over Sakura-Tribe Elder, who's been feeling a bit outclassed lately.
I'm not going to add it to my cube, but making an army and saccing it to fetch Mirror Entity for a huge Eldrazi Scion swing is a story I want to hear in the "It could only happen in a Cube draft..." thread. I'm hopeful on this.
I've actually been wanting to add Awakening Zone for awhile just always forget to so this actually looks pretty interesting to me now. I'll probably throw it in for testing.
3 Seems to be the maximum for token generation cards like this, for me at least. The difference between getting a token starting on turn 3 with awakening zone and 3 with this is a big deal. This is worse against aggro, worse for ramp, Honestly without an eldrazi in the deck this seems just overall worse than awakening zone, the +1/+0 will rarely matter, because this cards primary purpose is ramp.
At 720 I have room for both Awakening Zone and this and will happily be including it. It also makes Catacomb Sifter and Smothering Abomination a bit more interesting but I'm not sure if it does enough to warrant testing those two.
Anyway, the Scions are superior to Spawns in that they can hold a Jitte and can help Edric go absurd. I also don't mind another card to enable Opposition, especially in green to give more oomph to Simic.dec and the increase in mana cost isn't too bad even if it comes into play a turn later than Awakening Zone would.
The ability to tutor up Mirror Entity or All is Dust is a nice little bonus.
I currently play both Awakening Zone and Squirrel Nest, and while my players will miss the hilarity of squirrel tokens, this seems like a great trade up... makes similar threats, doesn't tie up a land, can ramp to bigger threats, and can even seek up a couple of those threats. Will definitely give it a try, especially since I have an easy swap.
I like this for 650+ish unpowered with all 4 mythic eldrazi , and all is dust. Hopefully a middling eldrazi becomes cubebable further incresing this cards value.
Other than that type of cube it seems way too slow.
I think Awakening Zone is so good because it only costs three. Obviously this card is a strict upgrade just based on the card text alone, but I don't know if it's better enough to warrant another four drop in an already crowded slot.
I don't run any Eldrazi in my cube so it only got 1 function for me. Probably going to pass. I like the design of making token with an actual poewr every turn though.
This is obviously not for smaller cubes. Especially if they don't run any Eldrazi. It isn't even a must-include at 600, but I like it enough that I am including it for sure. I am going to run at least four Eldrazi cards (old Kozilek, old Ulamog, new Ulamog, All is Dust), all of which would like to be in the same deck as From Beyond. And hopefully, I'll get one or two more, preferably cheaper than 9 mana.
I have cooled down on this card quite a bit. At 4 mana it is indeed very slow.
Hmm.. We'll see. I'll probably try it, but I don't think it will stay.
To those who plan to try it? What are you planning to cut for it?
I agree with you, there's not an obvious cut except Awakening Zone in my cube. It's too similar to Awakening Zone that I'm hesitant to run both side by side. And in most cases, it's going to be worse. At this point, it's been slotted into the "wait and see" pile for the rest of the set to be spoiled. I may test it as a temporary card for a few drafts and go from there but I'm not hopeful that it'll stay.
I like From Beyond. Probably more than I should.

It like the tutor ability for Eldrazi.
I really like the picture, too. It works really well with the quasi-colorless border.
