What do people think of Cursed Scroll? What decks does it usually go into and how do you use it?
I've been looking for more mana sinks and ways to support aggro in my cube and the scroll seems to fit both. I never really liked the card much but having seen it in action recently, I wanted to re-evaluate it.
It seems slow, situational, and inefficient to me but repeatable damage is always worth a look.
Ah, darn, I meant to put this in Card and Archetype Discussion, my mistake. Can a mod move this?
And yeah I've seen that it's only used when you only have 1 in hand. I was wondering if that's too uncommon a situation even for decks that are built to empty their hands quickly though.
It's a good source of reach for getting through those last few points of burn, and it also is decent at removing small enemy creatures. It's not horrible when you get flooded, although it is somewhat lackluster if you're mana screwed and can't dump your hand fast enough.
I'd say it should probably make every 450 cube, and some 360s.
I think it's a great source of mid/late-game colorless removal and reach. It's most popular in aggro and tempo decks, but it's a fine midrange card too; particularly for color combinations that don't have access to a lot of other reach or removal. I'm very happy with it at 375, and have no plans of removing it any time soon.
It does have uses beyond aggressive strategies too, I remember a scenario where I boarded it into my midrange deck versus a countermagic-heavy opponent. His deck had something like 2 planeswalkers and a Consecrated Sphinx with the rest of the spells being counters, so I wanted something I could put into play on the first turn and have it be a long-term source of pressure, which ended up playing out as planned and I dealt a bunch of extra damage. Ideally it's not something you put into a blue/white tapout archetype but it's not quite a 1-trick pony for aggro decks only. However, in aggro is where it definitely shines, because there's not many cards that can offer cheap, repeatable damage to blockers or dome.
I've used it in reanimation decks with things like Enclave Cryptologist, Pack Rat, and even Oona's Prowler. It's even better if you get the mis-print version.
This card has been in my cube since its birth over nine years ago. At first, it was a pretty strong card and I considered it a staple. But now, it is on my list of potential cuts for my Kaladesh inclusions. It just got picked lower and lower and made fewer and fewer main decks. It rarely sees play nowadays.
Edit: Mods, shouldn't this thread be moved to the Cube Card and Archetype Discussion subforum? I wasn't aware that it wasn't there until after I posted.
this is one of the sad artifacts (see what i did there?) of power creep. its unfortunate that one of the top players in sligh decks past can no longer make the cut for cubes. totally off topic, but that's one of the reasons why i intend to start curbing the power creep of my cube to try and keep it at a more "classic" feel that reflects the eras where I actively played.
Retrofitter Foundry has been better than expected which reminded me of Scroll. It was once beloved on these boards, but it seems to have been pushed out of most lists. I would love to have another Trinket Mage target, but my gut says that it’s too slow for 2018.
EDIT: don’t know why this thread is in this section...
Cursed Scroll is an easy card to underestimate. It keeps doing what it has always done here. Being awesome in some situations, being mediocre in others. But it is a 1CC card that can sometimes take over the game. This is pretty rare. It's main roll here is the long game reach for aggro and also a part of our Burn achetype.
I have doubted Scroll multiple times these last years, but then I put it in a deck and it just wins me games.
I want to find room to add Cursed Scroll back in. I do like the card, and I've never been able to purge it from my parole board. It's just waiting for its chance.

450 card Peasant cube thread. Draft it here.
