I've never thought this card was very good, for similar reasons to Ball Lightning (though it's certainly better). I also don't remember it being played in tons of cubes a year or two ago. Did this card see a resurgence in the last couple years or has it been in people's cubes this whole time? And someone convince me it's good!
I've always been impressed by Blistering Firecat. Gets in for a ton of damage, and it's nice you can attack with it un-morphed before you go in for the kill. Is it an absolute staple? Not even close, but it's a fine option and gets the job done. The bigger your cube is, the more you should run it.
7 damage is a lot of damage to come out of nowhere. And unlike the Ball Lightning variants, this one can stay on the table if you need a blocker or sword-carrier for more than one turn. I like to have at least 1 morph in each color (so they're not automatically telegraphed) but even if I didn't, I'd still play the Firecat.
It's fun in the mimic vat/sneak attack deck, and the huge amount of damage from just one card can close out games. That said, unless I'm heavy red I would rather just have a burn spell which is easier to cast and more versatile.
There's a glut of 4-drops in red (and every other colour) already - Hero of Oxid Ridge, Hellrider, Keldon Champion, Koth for aggro alone - and most of those cards are more powerful and easier to cast outside of mono-R.
Firecat is more of a 3 drop that can be casted as a 4 drop.
If I were to only compare it to red's 4-drop creatures on power level along, the Firecat wouldn't make the cut. (It would be pretty close to Keldon Champion, though).
However, it is a more interesting card than Champion (or Hellrider/Hero) as long as you play at least a handful of morphs. I can't tell you how many games I've thought, "well, I've got this one as long as that morph isn't..."
Ya, this card is more of a 3-drop that can go into Ball Lightning mode than it is a 4-drop. It shouldn't be competing against 4-drops, and it's better than Keldon Champion even if you are.
Blistering Firecat is great for all the reasons said above. I don't run it because mono red aggro does not need any more support in my 450 unpowered cube. Same reason I do not play Kargan Dragonlord.
I'm gonna suggest this guy for my buddy's angel deck. He's probably tired of playing Akroma face-down and having us all know what it is.
I even countered it once. Because man. I know its her.

There's a really easy fix for that. Exalted Angel?
Firecat is a sweet card that is awesome even if your opponent knows what it is. If your deck really needs this card's damage to win then you wait for the right time & cast it as a 4-drop. If your deck/hand is good where you can play him as a 3-drop then you can do that as well. His versatility combined with the fact that he can hit for 1/3 of your opponent's life makes him a slam dunk in my 540.
The morphs I'm currently running are Firecat, Exalted Angel, Bane of the Living & Willbender. Nantuko Vigilante just wasn't good enough for us.
7 trample damage is a lot more than it may seem (in-game as compared to on paper), especially out of the red decks who will be giving the business before it hits play as well. I've recently had a few matches where the last thing I wanted to see was a flipped Firecat...and it killed me each time.
I'm a big fan. It's surprisingly flexible (double or triple red, player burn or permanent body or both, four drop or three drop or three drop + 2cc spell on turn 4). It ends games a lot of other cards wouldn't.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.

Waylay exiles at the beginning of the next cleanup step, Firecat exiles at the beginning of the next end step, so you can unmorph at the end of your opponent's turn and then attack for 7 on your turn.
