I'm trying a new experiment and wanted some feedback.
I play a 3 player FFA format so it's a weird hybrid of MP cube and duel cube. I'm going to try and break the singleton rule of cube (I'd rather not debate whether or not I'm still playing cube at this point...Call it a draft environment if it is easier to digest :P).
- 2x fetchlands -> better mana fixing and synergy with a few cards. Thinking of ditching the ABU duals in favor of double shocklands to make the cost of splashing a real one.
- 2x Deathrite Shaman -> Great 1-2 drops are lacking in MP formats and this one is among the best. Synergies with the above change as well.
- 2x Figure of Destiny -> Scaling one drop that is hybrid and fits nicely into aggressive decks.
- 2x Baleful Strix -> Blue and black 2 drops are horrible. This one is awesome and has artifact synergy to boot.
- 2x Restoration Angel -> Slots into every deck and allows to push for a blink sub theme without having to use sub-optimal cards (Glimmerpoint Stag).
- 2x Snapcaster Mage -> Blue "2 drop" that enables a better spells matter archetype and is useful everywhere.
- 2x Vendilion Clique -> Great in a lot of decks and offers fair disruption. Opens up blue aggressive decks a little more.
- 2x Young Pyromancer -> I feel red 2 drops are severely lacking and this guy is decent. Fuels tokens and spells matter.
- 2x Courser of Kruphix -> Solid blocker and value engine with some incidental lifegain. Nice with double fetches too.
- 2x Beast Within -> Best green removal spell and has a nice amount of play to it as well.
- 2x Smuggler's Copter -> This guy has been really good to us and a second one should boost aggro decks enough to make them more popular.
- 2x Grafted Wargear -> I'm not playing Swords of X and Y because of the protections, so I'm hurting for equipment. This seems like a decent way to shore that up.
What do you think of these singleton breaks and which ones would you look to add?
I was thinking about trying out Monarch in a 4 player FFA cube (seems like a fun mechanic to promote attacking) and found Skyline Despot.
I really like having a source of draw in red and think this guy has potential.
Have any of you tried him out (or Monarch for that matter).

Yes. And yes.
Monarch is incredible fun. Really speeds the games up.
And Skyline Despot is a house. My group actually drafted a CNS2 box, and Despot was my buddy for the night. Won me a lot of games.
I've also got Queen Marchesa, Keeper of Keys, Custodi Lich, Regal Behemoth and Throne of the High City in my conspiracy section, but Despot is the one I've seen do the most work so far.

Agreed on all counts - Monarch is a fun mechanic that encourages a bit more aggression, which is something that has influenced some of my recent design choices. Skyline Despot is especially good, not only because it can protect you if you become the monarch, but it elevates the Monarch sub game into a cool thematic archenemy battle, with one side amassing dragons and lording over the rest of the table.
CB, was it you who had suggested starting the game with the Monarch token in the middle of the game for first blood? It's something I want to try soon and see how it plays.

Yup, it was. We had a seven-player cube draft a few weeks back, so we knew we were playing FFA (i.e. we had an uneven number for team play), and didn't have a heap of time. So one of my mates suggested it. Worked a treat.
I had a conspiracy cube at one point; in my current edh cube I have a Monarch cycle and a draft maters cycle, as well as a few of the artifact creatures from the first set. It's 720, so they haven't become too relevant yet, except for volatile chimera being fun and arcane savant triggering Ezuri's Predation being back-breaking. Monarch hasn't happened to come up recently but I'm still a big fan of having them in.
Monarch isn't really a "special case" though. Like, Monarch cards work perfectly fine in a normal game of Magic with no additional rules - Palace Jailer is actually seen a fair amount in Legacy even!
What IS a special case is introducing a Monarch at the start of the game that goes to whoever first deals damage to an opponent.

And while we're talking CNS2 cards, I got to live the dream last week in my mate's 1vs1 budget cube...
... I drafted Arcane Savant...
... and exiled Balance with it...

I feel like the true dream with [c}Arcane Savant[/c] is Ghostly Flicker. It becomes a one-card infinite mana + infinite artifact/creature ETB triggers package.

Arcane Savant has a ton of insane options. My first game with it I put Knowledge Exploitation on it, because I knew early in the draft I passed a Rite of Replication to the Riku player, and there was no way she wasn't playing it in Riku. I was playing a Prime Speaker Zagana ramp deck, so I cast it with 10 mana open , make 5 copies, and had a blast.
The friend I stole the RoR from put Austere Command on it in her Brago deck. That was insane, but it actually wasn't her best option. She missed it comboing with Stolen Identity for a one card infinite combo.
I've been constantly on the edge of cutting it because of how stupidly explosive it is. It's a one-card combo with a few cards in my cube. But it hasn't been a problem yet, even if six knowledge exploitations was a bit cumbersome, so it's still in for the time being. That said, in the last year I've gotten to cube barely at all and it's a shame.
Hopefully I can get something together after C17. Speaking of, planned includes thus far:
Those drops look okay, but I wonder if there isn't a better cut than Glissa, the Traitor. Most G/B legends are big into the sac + recursion archetype, and Glissa pulls the color pair in a unique direction.
The Dimir card I'd look to drop is probably Ashiok. Ashiok is fairly strong in regular Cube, but in EDH/Multiplayer cube, where there's more enemies, the chance of Ashiok living long enough to activate its -X ability goes down significantly, and since curves are higher, the chances of hitting a creature that you can actually steal after one +2 goes down as well. He's also extremely inflexible for a walker, as only a single one of his abilities can be used immediately, and if he's removed, that ability has no significant effect on the course of the game. Compare to the other 3-mana walkers: Jace at minimum draws you a card and his +Draw might even keep him alive for a while, Liliana can function as an edict, attack hands, or even set up your own graveyard shenanigans, Domri can either take a shot at drawing a card or make a dude fight, Dack loots two or steals the best artifact on the field. You've got a solid shot at card parity with all of these walkers even if they're dying right away, with flexible options in case one of their abilities is currently dead. Ashiok, on the other hand, seems like it'll be a "Target player exiles the top 3 cards of their library, gain 5 life" a significant amount of the time, and without any real variance either.

I'm late to the party, but I think Wildfire393 is spot on with Ashiok. He puts a target on your head, doesn't do much and is a horrible play later on. He's been strong whenever we play 3 player FFA, but weak at 4 players.
That being said, I think you could probably cut Extract from Darkness too. You already have lots of 5 CC cards in that guild and good cheap alternatives. I would probably add Tasigur, the Golden Fang in its stead. I know it's not technically a Dimir card, but I found it generally slots in those decks better with all the blue cantrips and black's GY shenanigans. It can come down at different places in the curve and is a great mana sink.
Sygg, River Cutthroat can be decent too as and early play for colors lacking good 2 drops.
The last two options I like (but are a bit lower power level) are Evil Twin (4 mana clone is ok + a removal spell) and Soul Manipulation as an easy 2 for 1.
Advent is currently in and has been decent. It can ambush creatures and I like instants as they make game play less linear. Nothing spectacular though.
Armada Wurm is a generic beater, but also a 6 drop that is difficult to splash. Which is nice since green and white are limited in that slot.
Hierarch is just solid. Body is nice, life gain is nice and the ability to counter most wraths is nice.
What are your thoughts on the 3 cards. Or is there another card I should consider before these? (Captain Sisay?)
Hmmm... what am I running that's not in that list? Let's see...
Sigarda, Host of Herons is an absolute house, even if you don't have that many sacrifice effects running around in your cube. She remains a fantastic beater for these colours.
Fracturing Gust is a card I am simply unable to drop. It short-circuits too many decks, usually provides a motherlode of life-gain, and is extremely amusing in Abzan decks that play around with life totals (i.e. hi there, Ayli).
Sundering Growth and Vitu-Ghazi Guildmage are there solely as carry-overs from when I had a fair bit of Populate shenanigans going on. You could easily take or leave both, but they're the two survivors from this archetype (meaning they're both strong enough even without other supporting cards). I will never get sick of populating Pack Rat tokens, for one.
Armadillo Cloak is the weakest of my main guild section, and exists only due to my cube having an Enchantress archetype (otherwise, this would probably be Mirari's Wake, I suppose).
My commander section carries Trostani, Selesnya's Voice and Sigarda, Heron's Grace as Selesnya generals. I haven't seen Sigarda 2.0 have a lot of board time. Trostani is incredible fun, but has a very tricky casting cost for a Limited format.
There's also another card I would consider - Dauntless Escort. You're looking hard at Loxodon Hierarch, but the Escort is better - it drops earlier, offers better protection and can get recurred by Sun Titan.
Given the other cards you've got in your guild already, you're looking for something permanent (so Ajani Unyielding can hit it), and something that either produces tokens or plays well with them. Out of what I have above, Trostani is the one card that can do all of those things, but also the hardest to resolve. Failing that, I'd probably go with Sigarda, Host of Herons (out of sheer awesomeness alone) or Dauntless Escort.
Which are, like, none of the three cards you were considering. Go me.
Selvala does look good. I totally forgot she existed and hadn't considered her. Not sure how I feel shipping everyone extra cards, but guess I will have to give her a shot!
Captain Sisay is too expensive now. Didn't realize her price was so high. Oh well...
Dragonlord Dromoka is solid, but also unexciting. Pretty easy pass on him. Which makes me realize, Armada Wurm is in the same boat...
I didn't mention Sigarda, Host of Herons because I'm not a huge fan of hexproof creatures. I like being able to interact with creatures other than through wraths. But you are right, she is a house!
Fracturing Gust is a card I always forget about, but that I should play. I'll find room for this one!
Loxodon Hierarch and Dauntless Escort: Escort is better you are right (not holding up mana is crucial), but thinking about it, I would probably rather have Selfless Spirit instead of both (cheaper and mono colored).
Trostani : If I had bigger tokens (most of them are 1/1), I could definitely see her going in. But getting a 1/1 for 3 mana is pretty horrible.
Nice work, Miaou!
For the record, Captain Sisay spiked last week when people figured out she could start fetching planeswalkers due to the Ixalan rule changes.
So it was Fathers' Day down here last weekend, and my family ruined me with a Kaladesh Bundle.
What did we pull from it? Chandra, Torch of Defiance! W00t!
So she obviously goes straight into my cube. I normally swap a walker for a walker, but in this slot things are different.
I'm currently running Daretti, Scrap Savant / Fiery Confluence / Mizzix's Mastery / Outpost Siege / Sneak Attack. Daretti is currently part of a nice little red Welder package, so the playgroup is leaning towards Mizzix's Mastery being the drop (and I'm inclined to agree with them).
BTW, Extract from Darkness will be the drop for Baleful Strix. Wildfire, I tend to agree about Ashiok, but she was a few days removed from wreaking havoc in an Atraxa deck out of the cube, so she's probably hanging around a little while yet for us.
I'm pretty sure you were all also right about me dropping the wrong Golgari commander to let Meren in. I'm also running Savra, who is almost identical to Meren in terms of game play as a commander. I should probably be dropping her instead of Glissa, the Traitor.
Of those four drops, I'd drop Outpost Siege for Chandra Torch. Chandra makes for a better Impulsive Draw engine, and that's the mode you're generally picking on Siege. Mizzix's Mastery is a fine cut too, but supports a very different archetype.

Hi guys, I've been looking at Ixilan and was wondering about some cards.
Treasure Map: I like it as a source of cheap colorless card advantage/filtering to help white and red decks. It's pretty slow though.
Dowsing Dagger: In a 4 player FFA match, shipping the 2 dudes to someone and finding an opening doesn't seem too tough to accomplish. They payoff is there, but is it worth the effort?

I like Dowsing Dagger far more than Treasure Map, which is too slow for me to get excited about. The dagger is easy enough to flip while providing a big boost especially when you can flip it early. It might not be as consistent as I'd like, but it's exciting enough to test.
I played against Treasure Map at the pre-release, and it remained good so long as you had Treasure floating about. So I guess it's probably going to be about as good as the number of other Treasure-generating cards you're adding to the cube. Dowsing Dagger concerns me in that it throws two perfectly good blockers out there for you to attack into, but I am assured that it's excellent on an evasive creature. Not strong enough for my cube, though.
At this point, I think my only add is Growing Rites of Itlimoc (which takes my card #360 in Harrow and steals its lunch money). I haven't looked as hard as I'd have liked to so far, though, truth be told.
It's true, there's little outside of those that I really want. A couple cards interest me - Vraska, Relic Seeker is sort of interesting, and I picked up a Thaumatic Compass which might prove too slow - but pirates and dinosaurs haven't exactly taken over.
Speaking of tribes, has anyone tried out tribal themes in their cubes? After the Commander 2017 decks left me with a bunch of powerful tribal nonsense, I've been wanting to try them out. Past attempts have been a weak, but I want to know if you all have had success.

Bloodforged Battle-Axe
Ramos, Dragon Engine (General, finally bumping out Child)
Generals meant to be drafted first in a single pack of 6 cards.
And here is the actual cube, meant to be drafted in 4 regular sized packs. (60 card decks)
I've also got Baleful Strix coming (finally!)... what should I drop from Dimir for it?
My Dimir section is six wide - Shadowmage Infiltrator / Ashiok / Aberration / Extract from Darkness / Havengul Lich / Dragonlord Silumgar. My playgroup is pretty sure Extract is the drop... it's good, but 5 mana for a reanimation spell is a lot in a format like cube...

Of course, I still might have to try Treasure Map out since it seems flavorful and fun, but wanted some outside opinion too.
From Ixalan, I might try Search for Azcanta once the price goes down (instead of Merfolk Looter or something) and I want to try Rampaging Ferocidon as a fairer Sulfuric Vortex.
Other than that, nothing seems too great :/

Speaking of tribes, has anyone tried out tribal themes in their cubes? After the Commander 2017 decks left me with a bunch of powerful tribal nonsense, I've been wanting to try them out. Past attempts have been a weak, but I want to know if you all have had success.
