Necromancer is unreliable. He is as fast as a Dread Return, but much easier to stop. He's okay as support, but you can't rely on him getting you there.
And those are the types of cards I tend to shy away from.
If you sacrifice him with his CIP trigger on the stack you still get your creature and do not need to discard a card. I used to do this playing Flash with Carion Feeder
People never seem to mention Dance of the Dead when talking about reanimation in cube. Obviously it is not as good as blacks best reanimation spells, but it is still pretty nice imo.
I concur. I'd use it before the 4+cc ones. The 2-mana combined with the ability to hit both yards makes it a fine card to grab ETB triggers with, even when not grabbing a fatty in the early game.
That and it's probably some of the best art on any reanimate spell. I'll confess to not being a big fan of animate dead's art, either time around. The Dance of the Dead Art is amazing

Thanks for the reminder! I completely forgot about this card when doing my cube changes where I pushed reanimator...this will be a welcome addition!
What about Shallow Grave? Pros are that it is cheap (1B), Instant speed and grants haste. Cons are that it is only the top card of your graveyard and you have to exile the creature EOT.
A lot of creatures with ETB effects would still be value with such a card, and Titans would be very good as you'd also get their attack trigger.
Dance of the Dead looks solid. I think that would be my next add for a reanimation spell. I would probably need to get rid of Akroma, as she doesn't tolerate black enchantments well. Elesh Norn's Vigilance, on the other hand, would be just dandy with Dance of the Dead.
Death is more like Reanimate than Exhume. Sometimes the life loss can be a real problem against an aggressive deck, particularly with burn.
Griselgrim has proved particularly valuable with Reanimate. Being "just" a 7/7 lifelinked flier can help stabilise against an aggressive deck, even when it is not safe to be drawing 7.

Use reanimation targets that can be cast normally if the game goes long, and ones that can't easily be removed or treachery'd. Cuz it really sucks to reanimate some huge fatty and then your opponent untaps, steals it, and kills you with it. Or pays W to remove a huge dude you spent a bunch of resources reanimating.
So things like
- Anything with shroud
- Anything with protection (particularly white/black/blue, like both Akroma's)
- Anything that has an amazing CITP effect.
Then include discard outlets like wild mongrel, putrid imp and aquamoeba. And looters.
Regarding Dance of the Dead, does the 1b untap clause look too disruptive? I'd love to fit in another reanimator spell, and Dance looks cheap enough but I have concerns.
Just found out that you can't use Tortured Existence to discard a creature unless you have a legal target to return already in your graveyard. That's out.
Dance of the Dead seems solid, I will give it a shot. Out of curiosity, how many reanimation spells seems reasonable? How many reanimation targets (say six cost or higher) are people running?
I'm going to be testing Intuition with this new format of mine. Seems good in reanimator, and broken in Loam decks. It assembles the entire Loam combo on its own, without your opponent having any choice in the matter.
Heh. The email I got still says Intuition in it I was trying to figure out what you meant though.
I actually just put Forbidden Alchemy in my U/B section, replacing the perfectly functional but never amazing Inkfathom Infiltrator. Haven't tested it yet but I'm feeling pretty good about it.
I like the Alchemy, but I needed the slot to go to Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas instead, to support the artifact.dec; another archetype I'm trying to push at the same time.
on the note of U/B and reanimator, I LOVE my havengul lich in the 360. I know its a low-mid pick at best but by god I love that card...and I have a foil japanese one! When I winston I always foolishly pick it...just because I can!

Is there a thread for artifact.dec? I'm keen to support that one as well.
Since my cube is about 90 cards bigger than yours, I found room for Tezz2.0 and forbidden alchemy. I'm running both of them, Psychatog, and Jon Finkel.

Also a card that had slipped my mind...might warrant a spot in my list, I'll have to look into it. Thanks for the suggestion!

How does it fare when compared to Diabolic Servitude?

Servitude, likewise, has been decent. The creature is more reliable than when hit with a Mannequin, and it can be reused.

At 450, trying to heavily support reanimator we had the following:
Had we known about Life//Death, we would have played that one as a BG spell as well I think.
I have no idea how many targets we had, but it was a good amount.
