I once played it in control, but that is extremely rare. I basically build Landstill from Legacy (manlands + Decree + Outpost). It is fantastic in blue temp though, especially when you can get the sweet, sweet, bounce + Standstill play on turn 4-6.
I would never cut a splash card that draws 3 for 2. This card only sucks if you play it wrong.
Every card sucks when you play it wrong.
This card has a specific timing window it can be cast in. It's bad outside of those windows, no matter who's piloting the deck. And it has very specific decks it can go in as well. You can't just toss it into every blue deck. It's a good tempo support card, but it still has to be played and decked exactly right.
I cut this card from our cube after testing it. I hated it. I had multiple games where it was a dead card because somehow the other deck was faster or even worse where it was a huge problem because my opponent started playing manland after manland.
I was so disappointed that I asked Fredo to cut it right away. It is not that this card is too hard to play, I just had too many situations where I couldn't play it.

I like to play it in the same deck as all those manlands, makes the experience so much more enjoyable
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
It's not hard to play it right. But it's not as common to be in a situation where it's "right" to cast it as most other blue cards are.
It's about finding that window. In some games the window will be obvious--you play some early creatures, your opponent is durdling around doing nothing, and you drop a standstill and commence to beat face. Other times that window is barely open: he also has a creature out, are you confident you can outrace him? You think he'll trade? If you wait on the standstill, is one of the 2 cards going to ruin your gameplan? Do you get greedy yourself and try to fill the board up more? Standstill can be a huge no-brainer, but it can also be the toughest card on the table to figure out.
Since (barring an instant or hilariously a creature with flash) almost all that you're doing in evaluating the board. That is not a difficult thing at all with enough experience with just playing magic.
Each player runs scenarios with what's on the board to see who would win the race.
Necro'ing this because I am looking for some unconventional tech in my Cube.
What is the verdict on standstill in 2021?
Decks have become a lot better in curving out, which should limit the usefulness of Standsrill - I was wondering whether some people still have it in their lists and what they think about it.
As a player of landstill in premodern, I have always wanted to get this card to work in cube. And it sits in sideboards more often than not.
Yeah I love the design and it's a cool card, but most board situations in cube where it's good (you have PW's in play that can safely activate, etc) you were gonna win anyway.
We haven’t run this for maybe 8 years, but our group seems to build one deck per draft that would work well with Standstill. Much of this has to do with the resurgence blue tempo plus a variety of powerful manlands. A fringe benefit is delirium enabler…
Standstill definitely has a lot more tools to deal with early threats now. More free spells like Force of Negation / Solitude / Subtlety / etc helps the board keep clear early game before you drop the Standstill. AFR manlands, Shark Typhoon, and Timeless Dragon are great threats to play around your own Standstill.
We got enough draw spells (especially draw 7s) in cube - This isn't a very exciting build around IMO.

While I agree that Standstill may ultimately not work out, I don’t view it as a “build around” necessarily if it has nice synergies with other cards that are already Cube-able. In my opinion a drafter likely isn’t going to say “oh sick, a Standstill, I’m now going to draft a shell entirely around this.” The hope is that the Standstill causes the drafter to weigh cards of similar power levels a bit differently considering the Standstill synergy and other synergies in their deck. They’re not going to immediately slam the first Timeless Dragon they see over a powerful pick, for example, but it might tip the scales in favor of Timeless Dragon over something similar but less synergistic like a Wrath or a Baneslayer.
This topic is somewhat relevant to the “drafting on rails” thread, as I think synergy packages that fit into pre-existing macro archetypes help tremendously with deck diversity.

"What am I looking at? Ashes, dead man."
At 450 I think we have 10 manlands. So decks with multiple manlands are not rare.
