When Tezz 1.0 is in the right deck, he's awesome. A lot of times, I just use him to untap Grim Monolith and a just-attacked Wurmcoil Engine and never use his other abilities. Other times, he tutors out a Masticore, Pithing Needle, or Sword of X & Y. He rarely goes ultimate for us, but when he does it's pretty great.
I always maindeck Pithing Needle. It effs up far too many cards to ride the board. I can't remember the last deck I've seen that didn't have at least one good card that Pithing Needle neutered.
Black Vise isn't in cube for the artifact deck. It's in cube to deal 6+ damage for 1 mana in an aggro deck. Also, Upheaval is a thing.
I find Black Vise a rather irritating card to both play and play against. It's certainly good enough, just very swingy and other than the Upheaval interaction, not very interesting. I've been on the verge of cutting it for a while, but keeping the artifact count up for Tezz has just barely kept it in.
I've been convinced to keep the Tezzes in for a bit longer...
And here's where our cubing philosophies differ: I find dealing 6 or more damage for 1 colorless mana very interesting. No other card does that. It is frustrating to play against; many of the best cards are.
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but playing a five mana tutor/ramp dude who can't protect himself seems absolutely not worth building your deck around.
My favourite play with Tezz 1 last time I drafted the artifact deck was playing him, then tutoring up my pet budgie.
I know what you're getting at but I just thought I'd share this play.
The only problem I had with that deck was that Tezz 2 wasn't in the pool.
Although, to be clear, he's not likely to be able to tutor up Hellkite, Inkwell, or the Sphinx, since it's a -X ability and he's not going to have that many counters on him.
Yeah, that deck looks ridiculous. Since I normally draft my cube with only two players, I'm always a bit shocked at how streamlined the archetypes can get when drafting with more people, especially if they draft for archetype and not just goodstuff decks.

Try sealed or a bigger card pool while drafting (open more packs but trash the last 5 cards or something)

Likely not, but it's multiplayer and I have proliferate cards in the cube... nothing would surprise me.
If you're playing an artifact theme, play him. He tutors utility artifacts and untaps mana rocks for big plays. Oh, and he can go ultimate the turn after you play him and kill your opponent with an army of animated trinkets.
He does a bunch of stuff. He can get an extra mana rock and then untap a couple on the next turn giving you a Battlesphere or whatever, or you can get a utility artifact like Tangle Wire or Pithing Needle or Winter Orb or something. His ultimate is cool because most players don't see it coming. Sometimes it just sets up an immediate win (3 artifacts is 15 damage, after all) and people go "ya, I forgot he could do that". It sometimes just grabs a Sword for your Strix or whatever to carry, so it really just depends on what the board calls for. He does a lot of different things.
If you run Time Vault combo at all, Tezzeret is one of the best pieces as he fetches up the vault and--in case there's a Faith's Fetters on your Time Vault you can remove with something in your deck you can draw into, and your Tezzeret is going to die after you fetch (oddly specific I know, but still)--the Voltaic Key. More importantly than that super-super specific latter part of that statement, he is a Voltaic Key himself.
Who are still playing this guy? How does he usually play and what do you think of that performance?
We're trying to push some kind of artifact theme and he might get added.
Hmm, I appear to have said above that I'd post back with results. And that was almost two years ago. Yeesh.
Bear in mind that mine is a Multiplayer cube, so it's a slower environment, but...
... Tezz 1.0 is not in danger of leaving my cube anytime soon. The cube has a fairly strong blue artifact archetype, and Tezz is the stick that stirs the drink. He is a high pick, and usually ends up tutoring for all of my cube's big mana rocks as a means of acceleration. He usually fishes out Gilded Lotus, Sol Ring and/or Chromatic Lantern straight up on resolution, and from there, the artifact player is on a winner, ramp-wise.
I would view Tezz 1.0 as purely an artifact ramp card when it comes to adding him to a cube (albeit one capable of some other fairly spectacular shenanigans, such as tutoring for Swords, or pulling off his ultimate), but he is very, very good at that ramping.

It was very nice. I have been quite happy with it post- reinclude.
I used to write cube articles on StarCityGames, now for GatheringMagic and podcast about cube (w/Antknee42.)
He's going to have Sol Ring, the ten Signets, Mimic Vat, Erratic Portal, Mox Diamond, Metalworker, Gilded Lotus, Isochron Scepter, Panoptic Mirror, Mana Vault and a couple of Tomes to untap.
And the five Swords, Steel Hellkite, Inkwell Leviathan and Sphinx of the Steel Wind to fetch (among other things).
I'm looking forward to seeing exactly how good a fit he is. If someone dominates with him, I'll post back here.
