My buddy runs an unpowered cube that is pretty swell. After drafting a a couple dozen times and making minor tweaks, we decided his reanimator support was a little too dense(could support two reasonable decks in a draft), so we are able to free a couple of slots to support another archtype in black.
We are debating whether to support or cut the following cards. They often get passed around, some people have gotten all of them and they just don't break games enough to draft around them:
His other black archetypes are just support slots for BR Aggro, BW lockout control, or BU control. He refuses to go the storm route because winning games out of nowhere isn't his thing. His cube is a 450 list.
Any ideas? I've read some more threads but still looking for more feedback (actually the other threads opened my eyes to cards we already have to support, namely red aggro and fetches).
I have a vested interest because I want to draft this card. I've only seen it maindeck a small number of times as an expensive recollect.
I'd run Dark Ritual in every cube. I'd only run the two lands in very large cubes, or if there was a minimum number of lands for each color, which is not a good idea IMO.
I've got no experience with Yawgmoth's Will. The cubists I know that run it rank it pretty highly.
I love Yawgmoth's Will and Dark Ritual, and I'd play them in every cube of every size. The two lands were pretty lackluster though, and I wouldn't recommend them based on my experiences. If you're looking for an additional archetype to run in black alongside reanimator, I'd consider a Pox/Stax archetype with recursive threats, Pox effects and Braids/Smokestack/Abyss type cards to go with them.
I think every card on that list is reasonable to exclude. Coffers is just too slow in my experience. I've never played tomb but it looks low impact, useful in a swamps matters theme so if you push that it could be good I guess. Dark rit and yawgwin are good cards but I found the latter to be unreliable. I wouldn't be upset about losing ritual right now but it's the only one I currently run and I like it. It sounds like its a fair cut for you, though, since it can lead to "out of nowhere" wins.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
Personally I'm a huge fan of Urborg. I actually exclude Dark Ritual for color pie reasons--following current R&D philosophy, I keep red as the fast mana / ritual color. (It's too bad, of course, that there's no red version of ritual that's worth playing.)
The problem with Yawg Will is that it's best used with dark ritual and strip mine (I also don't run strip mine). I do like the card, though.
I strongly agree with the above sentiment of including a Pox archetype if you want another black archetype; I personally enjoy enabling a BUG dredge deck as well, and I try to include plenty of hand destruction if people want to go that route (in both black and Rakdos).
We don't run Pox but we do run the other pieces of the Stax lock and it plays pretty well, much more successful as WB because of planeswalkers and access to balance. So, glad we are at least up to snuff in that regard. For reasons of splashability he does not want to include Pox / Death Cloud / etc.
I'm not sure how he would feel about adding dredge to his cube but it currently lacks support. We only have two potential black spots at this time we are eyeing.
Hand destruction is a good note - he has several low cost pieces but what are some good upper end hand disruption effects in mono black? Mind Twist is out due to power level.
