i don't have much experience with this guy but i'd love to hear discussion from people who do. an obvious comparison (brought up by Zovc) is imperial recruiter, but unlike him this guy has a legitimate body and is card advantage. there are great utility targets (mother of runes, grim lavamancer, goblin welder, etc) and in a zoo deck, getting two 1cc guys can be a pretty serious beating.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
I'm suprised this card doesn't already have a thread. Oh well.
When looking at this guy you have to look at not how many one drops that he fetches, but rather how many one drops that he fetches that are relevent on turn 5. At that point in the game garbing an Isamaru and a Goblin Guide are great for filling out your team, but most likely they will be blocked for profit by your opponent.
I think cube needs more Mother of Runes or be in a very tight list before this guy is worth playing.

I have experiences with him. He's not bad. But often time, he's just not impacting enough. Other 4 drop impact the board way more than him. He does search up good targets from times to times, but in the end, pure power just beat him. So I cut him form my cube.
Actualy I disagree to some extent MagicFever. I am much more willing to play this guy at 360 where he is likely to get paired with a Mother of Runes or a Figure of Destiny than I am willing to play him at 450 where the pool is diluted.

It lacks the beating power standard for entering the cube, but if you are fine with playing utility drops in white it is really a huge card. Im fine with that, I play Imperial Recruiter and Kor Sanctifier.
Maybe in tight cube you have already enough 4cc creature (Hero of BH, Angel of Restoration are way more powerfull)
Sometimes he's not that great, other times he's the scariest card you can see fetching both a Figure of Destiny and Student of Warfare. He can also fetch things like Noble Hierarch for some extra damage off Exalted, or Wild Dogs for a cantrip later in the game.
We have also gotten Dryad Militant recently which has a relevant hate ability.
Totally agree eidolon232, Eos doesn't wrap games up like the other 4 drops you want to play in aggro. The other problem is assembling the # of one drops to make Eos good, which is becoming less and less of a problem.
I do however love including cards in my list that promote specific deck types, especially ones that my playgroup doesn't typically draft. I do think Eos is getting better and better with each new set that comes out, he's a couple Goblin Guides away from getting into my list.
When I had my 450 unpowered cube about two years ago, Eos was always nuts when grabbing a fully enabled Wild Nacatl.
Compare the ranger to Siege-Gang Commander or Hermetic Druid, four mana gets you a small body for the CMC, but nets you additional bodies. Chances are, in a deck playing Ranger of Eos, you can tutor for two one-drops, play both of them and whatever you top deck next turn.
It's just a matter of playing an aggro deck with enough reach and rock to make that count on turn 5/6. I know that's slow for a lot of people's cubes, but it's not like it's totally unreasonable that your opponent can't answer three or more creatures if you also stick a Winter Orb or something of that nature.
Wasn't Eos in decks as a recovery option after your opponent wrathed? It also adds more bodies for white swarm. Your opponent only has so many bodies it can block, which I think it part of white aggro.
I like this guy a lot, he finds relevant targets in every W/x color pair.
Blue: Leveler looter
Black: Fume Spitter, or any 2 power guy
Red: Best options, Grim Lavamancer, Spikeshot Elder, Mogg Fanatic, beaters
Green: Fighter guy, 1/1's that pump to 3/3's, ramp, Heirarch
Guild: Kird Ape variants, FIGURE, Deathrite Shaman
Not to mention beaters (STUDENT), Mom, and Weathered Wayfarer in white.
This guy has been pretty damn good since I re-added it. There's a lot of 1-drops that hold their value into the later stages of the game. He also improves your draws and helps you rebuild after a sweeper. It also gives you more discard fuel as a way to simply "draw 2 cards" when it comes into play. I could see cutting it if I got another bomb 4-drop, but I'd rather not, because he's been awesome.
Never tried him, but I'm interested in what people who have experience have to say. For those of us with smaller cubes, is he worth running, particularly since he's in that crowded 4 slot?
I have him in my 630 and have loved him every time I've seen him. Most of the time he ends up in 2 or 3 color decks that have a plethora of one drops. I love the way he thins out decks when he hits as well. Even if he isn't able to pull out relevant cards, at the end of the day, that's 2 irrelevant cards not in your deck and more, and a body on the field.

we all play cloudgoat ranger, which is a 3/3 and some 1/1s on turn 5. if ranger of eos grabs two average targets it's going to be comparable to ranger but cheaper and with a delay. your example is 7 power for 3W over three bodies, which is pretty good even with a delay. it's definitely useful after a wrath.
again, i'm arguing mostly from reading the card rather than playing it.

I think the smaller the cube gets, the better he performs, because the concentration of great 1-drops is higher.

True, but he also suffers from the "Tragedy of 360" theory, which I just made up, because his competition becomes stiffer. He gets better, but I would argue that his competition gets better on a higher curve, so I still think he is marginally "better" the bigger a cube gets.

now that this is in MM3 i'm looking into him. Was suprised to see this rave review. does this still hold true today? what 1 drops are the best targets for him in most cube lists?
I have always been very unimpressed by him, he is ok but has never done anything amazing. My 4 drop white creature slot is kinda janky though so he has stayed longer than I would like but none of my drafters are ever excited to see him.
He gets better with more utility guys obviously and will probably continue to improve as his targets do but at the minute I'm not a fan.

Me too. For as much as I get that he's card advantage and a tutor and all the theory crafting, he's always been kind of underwhelming in performance. Plus there are a million (exaggeration) other solid 4s, so I'd much rather play them. Though Recruiter of the Guard does fetch him...
I was never a fan of Ranger of Eos. Sure, he has more things to search for these days, but it's not a great effect that I can abuse since I'll only have so few targets worth getting.
Recruiter of the Guard has ruined any chance of a Ranger of Eos comeback in my cube. It costs less, is nowhere near as picky, and can be abused multiple times for great value.
Hmmm... I am revisiting Ranger of Eos. We haven't Cubed with him since the printings of Walking Ballista and Hangarback Walker, and in addition to those creatures there are simply way more awesome 1-drops than there used to be, some of which scale better in the lategame (looking at Kessig Prowler, Skymarcher Aspirant, Kytheon, Dauntless Bodyguard). You still have the classic great hits like Lavamancer, Figure, and Mom, sometimes Welder.

Late-game in a rock deck, Goblin Bushwhacker is a cool target.
That was my experience with the ranger. Maybe my cube and/or players were too unconventional to be relevant.
