This guy is an EDH staple and personal pet card of mine. I've been surprised at how few lists run him. I'm assuming the primary reason here his CMC, but maybe I'm wrong.
What have your experiences been with Dupy Duptser and why do/don't you run him?
If aggro is competitive in your cube, Duplicant gets much worse than otherwise. You have to get to 6 mana and even then your target may be small. It's great to exile a dude and get a dude, but your dude may be fairly unimpressive (a 3/3 or less in many cases). Additionally, many creatuers have done most of their damage just by entering play, further reducing Duplicant's value. It's a good card, but really is only for larger cubes at this point.
I rate this much higher than the rest of you, and I run it at 420. It's a 5 mana sorcery unmake? How? I love this card. Unconditional exile, which is rare enough, a 2 for 1, abusable with blink and reanimation, and works with all artifact mana accel. I prefer this to Triskelion, though narrowly.
Running a larger list I find Duplicant to still be a solid addition to many decks. I find he is very strong in white/blue based decks which can utilize both the blink mechanic and bounce spells to get multiple triggers off of him (Plays especially nice with Venser the Sojourner). He also makes for a good sideboard card against the ramp decks and reanimator strategies.
He will get outclassed someday, but it may take some time, especially as he sees a lot of play right now in my cube.
I like your statistics of MD%, although they are a bit off from the forum consensus. One thing that you could add (or change) is the number of times something was tested. If one card was in for 1 game session and maindecked in that session it gets a value of 100%, but this is not statistically significant. I would suggest to either add the number of game sessions a card was present (n) or to give raw values instead of percent, like 7/10 or so. The statistical significance of 700/1000 is much bigger than 7/10, but they give the same % number. Just something to consider...
Don D, I could also shave on the datas from cards from small samples. For example, cutting everything that wasn't in for at least 15 drafts. That would require a little more work on my side but would give the same information, without cluttering the messages with to many digits (which is something I want to avoid).
What do you think?
Cutting the cards without a high enough n makes sure you only have significant data, but it would take a while (depending how often you are cubing:D) untill newer cards are represented in the list (and often the newer cards are of high interest to cubists). Additionally, the viewer would still not know if the data comes from 16 or 100 or 1000 or more sessions.
After thinking for a while about what is the easiest but most informative way to represent a cards main deck appearance is really the raw value, for example like mentioned above 7/10 game sessions a card was maindecked. On the other hand, the % values allow for easy visualization of the ranking, for example it's easy to see that 70% is more than 69% but without added effort it's not easy to see if 317/453 is more or less than 861/1247. To combine convenient visualization and statistical information in one package without leaving away new cards with less playtime, I would suggest to add after the maindeck% the n value. So in the example from above: 7/10 -> 70% (n=10) or 70% (10) or 70%/10 or 70%10.
If we want to discuss more about representation of data we should probably do this in a different thread and not spam this [SCD] thread.
Duplicant is a fine card, and had a spot in my cube for a long time. With the coming of Wurmcoil Engine, however, and other better, faster cards, he couldn't compete, and got removed.
While looking for some new inspiration for my cube, I stumbled over this thread and deemed it worthy of a necro. Is Duplicant still in the same spot as it was when last discussed in this thread? It is somewhat similar to Fractured Identity, which of course has the huge upside to target a nonland permanent, whereas duplicant only works for nontoken creatures. Duplicant is colorless though.
Any new thoughts or experiences?
I think it’s still the second best card in its slot as a 6 CMC colorless midrange threat.
I no longer have incentive to run a second 6 CMC colorless midrange threat. Hangarback Walker and Walking Ballista fill midrangey colorless roles with more flexibility and random synergies, and colorless top-end threats have gotten deeper between Ugin, the second round of Eldrazi and unsung cube All-Star Ancient Stone Idol
I believe Duplicant was somewhere near the beginning of the power creep of creatures from the past several years. I generally feel that it's overrated by players who played limited and constructed during Mirrodin. At its core it's just a colorless Nekrataal variant. Keeping that in mind, I don't think being colorless and the potential to end up a decent sized body warrants the six mana casting cost by today's standards. Casting Nekrataal to target a bear that's ruining your time feels good. Paying six for that same play is a little less satisfying. It'd probably be better, at least in cube, if it didn't take on the p/t of the creature it exiled and just remained a 2/4. I could also justify the casting cost if it was a clone that exiled the copied creature. I'd say it's a fine creature for larger cubes in the 720+ range, but only due to lack of competition at that slot. I'd put it at number four behind Wurmcoil, Triskelion, and Scuttling Doom Engine for that slot.
Duplicant is still pretty good but gets better the more ways your cube can exploit it, would gladly swap it out for a Wurmcoil Engine if it was in my price range though.
