Compared to Green Sun's Zenith:
+ Instant-speed!
+ can search for any creature, not just green ones!
+ Convoke
- XGGG instead of XG
- doesn't go back into the library
What do you think? Is Convoke good enough to offset the higher mana cost?
It's sad that it's so green intensive, so while it can search for creatures of any color, it would still only go in heavy green decks.
Edit: Oh, I just realized this is a reprint. Anyway, there doesn't seem to be a SCD for it yet.
Much, much to hard to use as a utility card to grab an important low-cmc creature. Which is the primary use for GSZ. Plus, Zenith has the upside of being able to be re-drawn later to get a bigger creature, and can actually reduce the green requirement on the target down to XG. Needless to say, never had much success with Chord in a cube setting.
This is a really good card, but it's not quite efficient enough for a 450 Powered Cube.
What makes GSZ great is that it's effectively a Rampant Growth (assuming you have a one-drop accelerator in your deck) with a lot of potential upside (grabbing utility creatures or finishers later in the game). Chord of Calling is missing that crucial functionality.
That said, instant speed and "color blindness" are serious perks, so once your Cube goes over a certain size, I'd strongly consider this. I'd definitely play this at 720, maybe even smaller.
I would rather play Green Sun's Zenith because it's two mana more efficient even if you're just limiting yourself to green creatures and sorcery speed. Two mana less is way better.
That being said, it's two green mana less. So this limits the effectiveness of this card to ramp, where a lot of your creatures will be producing mana anyway so the convoke cost is somewhat redundant.
I don't like this card in cube at all and would likely never take it unless there was absolutely nothing else in the pack for me. I don't know how often this would make my maindeck even in a very large cube, but I would probably play it there to have the effect more often.
I play Natural Order, Worldly Tutor, and GSZ and have tried all of the others. At 450 I would say birthing pod come next and this would be tempting to add at the same time for redundancy. I have started to shy away from the tool-box green in favor of just beating people to death with the great new fatties we have, but it depends on your cube.
