A splashable instant 4 for 1. Seems like it could be pretty insane.
5 mana land destruction is not the best, but land destruction is one of those abilities (like discard) that gets exponentially better the more of it you have in a deck. This card with something like Pillage or Avalanche Riders could be really good.
The creature kill is an instant speed two for one. It could read "destroy target creature, then opponent sacrifices a creature". Although 5 might be a lot for this effect, at instant speed and with only a single red in the cost, it could be worth playing for the kill alone.
With the two abilities together I am definitely going to test this baby out.
I really think this card can make it in Cube out of the Offering cycle. It's a bit expensive for Red, but it's great for the midrange/control decks, and is essentially a 4-for-1 in the right situations, at instant speed. Thoughts?
I don't think it's a 4 for 1. Can't the opponent chose the same targets as you, similar to Council's Judgement? If it is a 4 for 1 I think it's cubable. If it's a 2 for 1 I don't really like it.
It'll just be a 2-for-1. Because "target" appears multiple times in each clause and it doesn't say "another", they can just choose the same land and the same creature that you did, which basically makes this a nonbasic-only Stone Rain with a Flame Slash++ stapled to it.
EDIT: Oh, it's an instant, not a sorcery...that makes it slightly better, but I'm still not sure I'm excited about it. It's still definitely the best of the cycle, since it's not "hey we both get the same things", but I'm not sure it's good enough to make the cut for me.
Bah! You're right about the targeting rules. I was really excited there for a minute. I guess it would have been too strong for 1 v 1 commander games (but cube it would have been perfect ).
I guess I don't understand the targeting. I was sure we had a staple on our hands.
The key here is it's not "another target non basic land you don't control". As it is worded, you just choose the same.
For reference on how this ability would be worded to be a 4 for 1:
Which means you can't put all the counters on the same creature, so if you have 1 creature and your opponent has 2 then you have to put it on them, and if there are only 2 creatures on the board IG is uncastable. You can carry over the same general concepts to make Volcanic Offering an actual 4 for 1. (Which would still be pretty bad in my opinion, since you need 4 targets and sometimes 2 non basics on your opponent's side is a lot to ask.) Hope that helps.
I get the lack of the 'another' part. I guess when I first saw it I thought it had the destroys as two separate sentences or it had a "then" between them. That would have been a difference story. Really too bad because I think that we aren't going to get a cubeable spells that destroys one land but two lands could get exciting.

There are many reasons for your opponent to simply pick the same targets as you.
Unless you're good at detecting honesty and analyzing body language, you can't guarantee anything but a 2 for 1 on this card.
If he chooses the exact same target as you do, he suddenly becomes a "pseudo-heroic" in the eyes of your other opponents.
"Serious question, why are the people in the mtgsal thread so ****ing stupid?"
