There were some past discussion on this, that I tried to merge into this thread.... It disappeared somehow, and I can't seem to find the discussion... Don't have time to fix it now, but I'll see what I can do.
I need some help when it comes to this section of my cube. I have a 360 mostly-modern cube (my list on this forum is seriously outdated), but I feel this is one of my weakest sections.
One card I want to focus on is Etherium-Horn Sorcerer. I really like this card, and I am not sure why it isn't in a lot of cubes. It seems really strong to me.
Well in 360 probably the worst 6 cost creature I run is Massacre Wurm, and the rest are the Titans and Wurmcoil Engine.
I'd rather have the effect of Massacre Wurm than the chance to cascade into a card thats worth between 1-5 CMC, especially since many of those cards in UR may be counters or cantrips. I'd obviously rather have the ETB & Attack triggers of the titans (which are monocolored to boot).
The body on the Horn Sorcerer is negligible for a 6CMC, so you have to ask whether it's worth 9 mana a turn to cascade into a spell that's worth between 1-5 mana. I think the answer for nearly everybody is no.
it's definitely a fun card, but that's about it. It can't really be used as a finisher and doesn't do as much as the other izzet cards. It doesn't really fill any roles, which I think is a bad spot for a 6cmc to be in.
Edit: and volcanon, I meant boring for cube. Electrolyze, fire//ice, and prophetic bolt are pretty much the same card on different scales, and are also the best cards, which means that there are no other characteristics of the guild that are cubeable. It's unfortunate, because I think there's a lot of potential. We'll probably end up playing the walker that comes out in the third set, and hopefully he won't ping and draw cards.
Currently for me the main problems with Izzet are that Electrolyze, Prophetic Bolt, and Fire/Ice are just boring. They're also being outclassed as creatures improve. I find that counterburn leans a lot more on the counters these days and a lot less on the burn.
I run Fire/Ice, Izzet Guildmage, Wee Dragonauts, and Gelectrode. I'll probably cute Fire/Ice for Nivix Guildmage, and add Izzet Charm. I think that more interesting UR cards are yet to be revealed (for one, the U/R hybrid creature), in which case I'll cut Izzet Guildmage.
I'm too much a fan of the Dragonauts right now to cut them, in part because they make for such memorable plays--we had someone ponder, shard volley you, berserk on turn four for 17 damage. For the average case scenario, Guttersnipe is likely better. But sometimes high-variance cards are what you need.
I like all of my Izzet cards, but none of them are set in stone. I wouldn't mind turning over all the cards in this guild if the new ones were good enough. I'd miss Prophetic Bolt the most, but even that is expendable. Izzet Charm is coming in for sure and the dragon is a maybe. I hope we get something else good.
Agree with rantipole. I think Izzet Charm is possibly the best UR spell now. Three sweet modes on one spell! It's a shame that the speculated UR walker didn't materialise, because it's a colour combo that needed one more than GB did. There's no reason we couldn't get one in GTC or Sinker, however.
Is Suffocating Blast just bad? It seems to me that a Cancel stapled to a Lightning Bolt for the cost of those cards would be playable. A couple of cubes use it, but Nof doesn't even have testing data on it.
I feel like the mana cost might be too high for a counterspell, but otherwise it's a pretty exciting card.

You're the dude who just lies a lot and makes people hate you and then magically becomes town later, right?
Lightning Bolt is awesome because it's one mana and answers almost everything early. It's much worse when you have to counter a spell to cast it, and even worse when you have to leave up 4! mana to do that.
I'm actually looking forward to cubing with new Mizzet, even if he doesn't last long. The old one got outclassed quick, but this one presents a ridiculous clock and a mountain of card advantage if you untap with him, on top of being another Masticore, one of my favorite card types.
And I can confirm that Izzet Charm is the real deal, probably top three material. I included it in a Grixis reanimator shell and every mode was incredibly useful - whether it was dumping Grave Titans and Myr Battlespheres in the yard, burning down mana dorks and Dark Confidants, or countering key spells like planeswalkers.
I believe WoTC's new policy is to make sure that every color can enjoy the exciting gameplay mechanic of making undercosted dudes and then turning them sideways. Clearly the future of magic.

I did. It's a solid spell. Nothing spectacular, but I'd rank it at #6 for a powered cube and #7 for an unpowered cube.
Wait, which Izzet card goes up in value in powered cubes?
So far, I've found Turn//Burn equivalent to Fire//Ice and a bit worse than Izzet Charm. I'll probably rotate one of the three out on a semi-regular basis.
None. But unpowered cubes will likely want the Izzet Signet, so it bumps other cards down a notch.
I think most cubes would want Izzet Signet for power level reasons. It's understandable that some cubers don't want too many mana-stones, and thus have removed stuff like the signet.
I've removed the color-specific mana stones in my cube for two main reasons 1) they're more narrow than the colorless ones are and 2) between the good colorless ones and the broken artifact mana that powered cubes have, they're just not needed. Unpowered cubes are much more likely to want to supplement the good colorless rocks with additional color-specific rocks, because they're down 6-10 additional great colorless mana producers that powered cubes have.
Well, it can shoot players/planeswalkers, more easily kill creatures that aren't in combat (while still generating CA), and can kill creatures with toughness >3 ...so I don't think it's really an Agony Warp at all.
If anyone is unhappy with the usual suspects, I suggest Frostburn Weird. I have him in my cube and he makes the main just about every time a control or counter burn deck gets a hold of him. He stymies aggro decks pretty well and does a decent job of swinging in more aggressive decks. Not an allstar card but the kind of solid role player that helps secure wins.

Currently my Izzet section looks like this.
1 Electrolyze
1 Etherium-Horn Sorcerer
1 Izzet Signet

I didn't even realize that, wow. I always thought you could hit players with it too.

Also, I could see myself cutting the Efreet for another good creature that gets printed in RtR

Agony Warp doesn't deal with fatties and leaves play triggers. Doesn't hit players/planeswalkers nor is it a hybrid spell.
