We had a bit of a nightmare in Dec/Jan! Everyone was away over Christmas, so it was tough to get together to record. We actually did the FRF review right after its spoiler release, by mrbrightside was unwell for a time and wasn't able to edit the podcast... I will check what the status is. In either way it won't be long 'til it's live, and we will be getting back to our usual schedule as soon as possible!
Yeah, what Goodking said. We have our 2-part FRF set review recorded, but I just got back from the hospital after being sick for the last 2.5 weeks. I will try my absolute best to finish the shows ASAP. Sorry to let you down.
Regarding the comment @34:30
Izzet Signet is an example of a card that is easily dismissed as being 'not good enough for 360'... but continues to be drafted highly in my cube and is still very valuable to a number of archetypes I support.
I disagree surprisingly often when I hear 'not good enough for 360'... so much depends on your own aims, goals and archetypes. We don't run Izzet Signet, but it would absolutely see play if we did.
Went back and heard the comment again. I, too, am not a fan of calling the cards "360 playable" or "I don't run it at 450, but I would run it at 720", and my comment appeared to follow that line of thought. Although I agree that sometimes referring to cards in those terms is useful to give others a general idea of the power level you consider the card to have, there are numerous cards that are better in smaller lists than in larger lists (and vice-versa) and I think it really depends on your vision for your Cube gameplay and on the archetypes you want to support. (I would imagine Izzet Signet to be a very important piece in supporting both Wildfire and Tinker decks in a compact and elegant way.)
I always like to keep in mind this post in mind when we have this discussion - and I feel like we are very near that point already.
This week, we talk about 1-drops (and 0-drops). What are some really strong plays you can make on turn 1 in Cube? Which 1-drops need to be played turn 1 for full effect, and which retain value if played later in the game? Why do we want as many aggressive 1-drops as we can get? What can we learn about the roles of the different colours in Cube by their choice of 1-drops? What are the differences between creature and non-creature 1-drops?
This is part 1 on a 6-part series on X-Drops in Cube. We will try to give some insight on the very foundation of Cube design by looking at the game play and some usual card choices as we move along the mana curve.
This was mrbrightside's very good idea of a more holistic approach to discussing cube contents rather than going through by colour, and I think it panned out pretty well. The landscape of one drops sure has changed a lot in the last couple of years. Hope you enjoy the episode!
Hey guys. Just finished the latest podcast. I for one would very much be interested in seeing you guys continue this series along the mana curve. Its always helpful to hear in-depth discussions on these sorts of topics. (You've even convinced me to try out Delver again.)
keep up the great work!
My group liked hearing about strategies/plays and now they're asking me to add Mental Mistep (I play a lot of aggro). Us cube managers love the set reviews but I think regular cubers can really get a lot out of these episodes. I have a couple of new cubers who haven't played any limited at all, and it was back in Odyssey block since they've played any Magic, and they loved this. I'm sure they'll be valuing black disruption and Greater Gargadon higher now.
Deathrite Shaman has been amazing for us -- that incidental graveyard hate is awesome with Living Death which is a favorite around here.
I also brought in Vandalblast. I agree that killing that fast mana rock or early Tinker is really crucial. Also, I'm a real believer in green aggro and will stand by it . E1, Wild Nacatl, Wolfbitten Captive, Jungle Lion and Warden are all legit and the 2-drops are also very strong.
Anywho, great episode and I'm looking forward to the next one. Oh and thanks for the shoutout! My friends were all surprised when you said my name lol
I'm glad you and your group enjoyed it! These episodes take a bit of preparation but it was really enjoyable to do it. Two drops is almost 'the big one' so we'll have to prepare doubly for that...
Agreed about Deathrite!
I'm interested to hear how Misstep and Vandalblast do for you. Specifically being early answers for a lot of problem cards is something we have found useful. I'm happy to have cut Keldon Vandals for VB, Manic Vandals does that job fine and having a cheaper and more versatile alternative (which helps R/x spells matter too) is giving us more variety.
I'm a big fan of the best green aggro drops which just make it a better splash colour, like the ones you mentioned. Every colour enabled for aggro in some capacity makes drafting aggro exponentially easier and better. Green doesn't have the volume of great one drops but contributes a lot in other areas. I'd argue it has a greater number of decent 2 drops for aggro than black, for example.
Anyway, we have been working to bring a special guest on next episode so stay tuned!
It was with great pleasure that we had Antknee42 as a guest on this episode! We talked about the past, present and future of Cube as a format; additional topics include (but are not limited to) how and why “pimping” began, the ‘new player’ feeling and how that relates to Cube, why context means a lot when it comes to Cube, linguistics, banned cards, Cleric tribal, the different layers of power level, ecosystems, the “thrills” of life, Magic simulators, the social contract in Commander and how that relates to Cube and “double-sleeving”. We had a great time recording this, and we hope you also enjoy it!
Usman the Day Saver to the rescue! Sorry to hear Liam's in the hospital, but I'm glad you found a solid fill in. Can't wait to listen to the review and also psyched to listen to Anthony's episode too. You guys are killing it lately!
With Usman Jamil filling in for Liam, here’s our Origins Set Review! After a quick overview on the logistics of Double-face Cards, Arthur and Usman take turns evaluating the new cards for Cube in a speedrun-like fashion (in the great tradition of Sports Panel Games like Around the Horn). Let us know your own ideas about the new cards, as well as who you think “won” the debate!
It may look like the podcast has died somewhat over the last 6 months, but we're hoping that's not the case. Speaking for myself, I had moved house, area, job, and just about everything else. Pedro has been deep in his PhD amongst other big news. Everything conspired against us. I loved recording the 'cast and we had good feedback from listeners, so we are going to talk about reviving things now we are - hopefully - more stable.
