Me, goodking and a friend named Arthur started a podcast about Cube! The pilot episode is up, check it out at http://manadeprived.com/mtgin3d-001-pilot-episode/. We start by discussing early Journey into Nyx spoilers, card evaluation, 2-drops, and the inevitable random tangents.
All feedback is welcome! Thanks, and we hope you like it!
We wanted to discuss how your drafting practices affect your card inclusion, and how changing from Winston to Sealed and other draft types can make you rethink your card choices and mana costs.
And we had a few early Journey into Nyx spoilers to discuss as well!
We've recorded a full JOU spoiler session too since then with a live crack-a-pack session, which should be the next episode...
I need an RSS feed to listen through my phone app, which I will do as soon as possible!
I have information that the website is setting up an RSS feed for our podcast, but in the meanwhile, you can use the ManaDeprived RSS feed: http://manadeprived.com/listen/podcasts/feed/
If that doesn't work, I will let you know when our RSS feed is set. Thanks, and I hope you enjoy the podcast!
Episode 3 is up! We discuss our Magic backgrounds, how and why did we start Cubing, what is our vision for our Cubes, what are our pet cards, Cube archetypes, and 3 P1P1 scenarios! We hope you enjoy it, and we're always looking for feedback, so say something!
Our episode about Conspiracy is now up! Unfortunately we don't have any new spoilers, but we talk plenty about the Conspiracies and the new draft-altering constructs! Any feedback is much appreciated.
It so happened that we didn't miss too much from the final round of spoilers, other than some nice reprints - the last few spoilers weren't so great. If you haven't checked out the podcast review yet, please have a listen!
Hello, I just gave your latest episode a listen and thought I would provide some feedback. I am pretty new to magic still, but I've listened to over 1000 hours of game-related podcasts. I have found most of the MTG podcasts to be 'unplayable'.
Your podcast was good, especially for being so early in your episodes. I like that you stay on topic (of magic!) and don't go into personal side conversations with each other that that most listeners would not know anything about. I felt the conversation was relavent.
I do have a few suggestions, based on things I found worked well for me in other podcasts.
1) When you are going over cards, if you could please make sure to clearly state the name and then a quick review of its stats. Something like "Cogwork Library, it is 4 colorless for a 3/3. And then read the text on the card or at least summarize it." Without this, the discussion about the card is nearly impossible to follow unless I happen to know what it does by name. If I am by a computer or able to pull up the card some other way, I can kind of make it work... but usually I listen to podcasts in the car in some other location where looking at a screen isn't possible.
2) I like the show notes and the structure you have to the show. Perhaps at the start of the show, you could go over very briefly the topics you plan to cover during the show. When you shift topics, make a point about it. Something like "ok, well we've wrapped up talking about our thoughts on various conspiracy cards, now lets move on to our discussion of super-ramp in green."
3) I know this one is hard with 3+ people and not recording in the same location, but be careful with talking over/interrupting each other. I thought you guys did a great job of not doing it too much, given the situation, but it really makes things hard to follow when 2 people are talking at once. I don't have any experience with how to make this work better. I imagine it comes with time together as well, where you can pick up when to start talking and stop.
Thanks for putting this podcast together, you guys are already ahead of most of the other ones that I have listened to.
Thank you for your kind words, RangerRobAZ, they mean a lot to us. We're trying to get better with each episode and we will for sure keep your suggestions in mind for the next episode and beyond. Some of the things you suggest are indeed difficult to control - like the change between different topics or making sure only one person is talking at a given time - but are actively trying to keep an eye on them for the future. Thanks for commenting, and I hope you enjoyed this (and maybe future) episodes!
Thanks very much indeed for the kind words RangerRob. It's made my day that you liked our podcast!
Regarding your individual points, there are a few things still to work on. Certainly it is difficult to coordinate with three people at once, and even more so with four when Mark and Arthur were with us at the same time! That is something that comes with time, and I have a couple of ideas about how to smooth that a bit to share with the guys. Inevitably sometimes people start talking at once, but it's not been too often happily.
Discussing the topics we will cover is so obvious that it embarrasses me we didn't do it... it is in the show notes but should probably be in the show itself too.
Sometimes I get too excited about a card and then forget to say what it does I will pay particular attention to that, there's no excuse for not reading the card out!
Thanks for listening and I hope you continue to enjoy it
Just listened to the podcast with wtwlf while I was on the treadmill. It was good!
1) I love the international flavor.
2) Mrbrightside did a really fine job of keeping the conversation moving along, especially in the pod's first half. He's a natural host.
3) All three of you (not including Arthur here, since he wasn't really around) had some lovely chemistry, and it was consistently engaging throughout. I wasn't ever bored.
4) Wtwlf was an ideal guest and would be a great addition as a permanent panelist. In text form, his strong opinions can come off as, uh, a little brusque, but when you can actually hear his voice you realize that it's all a matter of just being incredibly enthusiastic about cubing.
6) The conversation became a bit desultory towards the end, lacking a certain amount of structure. It might be something to work on.
Thanks hoodwink, It certainly was a very international podcast with myself, an American, a Portuguese, and a Frenchman via Spain! Cubeing is a worldwide phenomenon! The conversation at the end was of an open format brainstorm-type affair, something we haven't done too much so far, but if it didn't work as well we can try to retain a more rigid format like in our Episode 4 Conspiracy review. We hope to have wtwlf back around and he's keen to do that as well, maybe on a regular basis if we can all organise our various schedules across nine time zones...!
Just wanted to say I also enjoyed the work you three are doing! I will watch out for new episodes now. Was great to hear what you guys all think, and also what Mark had to say too. Not that your cast should be too MTGS-centric, bout it would be awesome to hear from some of the other big wigs around here too.
Should you gents ever looking for a discussion of UN cards, I'd love to chime in. Also, there is some very interesting work happening locally here with a fine fellow making what he calls the Meta-cube, from which he can build all our cubes at will. He probably has some interesting things to say as well.
Just out of curiosity, you guys have an American, a Frenchman, and Portuguese voice - why are you hosted in Canada? Whatever the reason, love it. Props for making the community that much better.
Awesome to hear from you, flutterguy, much appreciated! I'll try to address your suggestions:
1. Glad to know you liked the episode.
2. We have so great ideas for future guests; I'm sure not all of them will pan out, but stay tuned! Also, if you have someone you would really like to hear on the show, let us know.
3. I don't know for sure if there's enough to say about UN-cards to fill a whole episode, but we talked a bit about them in episode 3 (the 3-hour marathon about ourselves and our cube philosophies). I run a few of those myself (Symbol Status, City of Ass, Booster Tutor and Who/What/When/Where/Why). If we get back to that topic, we'll be glad to have you in.
4. That meta-cube idea looks cool and I have the feeling I may have seen it somewhere... maybe you can send me the details via PM, or even better, start a thread about that?
5. Liam is British, but yeah, how do you get a British, a Portuguese, and a Frenchman (via Spain) in a bar Canadian website? Well, for the short version of the story: the stars aligned! We are very happy to be on ManaDeprived, those guys have some good Magic content and some of the best Magic podcasts in the business.
Thanks again for your kind comment, and we hope to be able to keep you around!
Yeah, don't forget about me flutterguy Unless you're mistaking my substantial Dorset accent for an American accent O_o
Man, an episode just on UN cards would be fantastic, I have to say I think there may well be enough to fill an episode, because there's something to talk about in terms of why people do or don't play them... I know mrbrightside runs a couple, and we'd love to have you to help out flutterguy. I have a bit of experience with a handful of them too. Not sure about Arthur!
