The first topic is "cards we want for cube in the next year or so" and we just hash out some ideas. Tell us what you think and let me know if you have any questions or critiques!
I fully support anyone who decides to create cube content for the community.
I liked the episode. You have good chemistry with each other, that's important. I laughed at the funny sound effects, but you have to be careful not to abuse them. Your choice to run this a discussion panel was a good one, but you may want to have some sort of rough guide for the episode; I felt like I lost my attention at times because you were drifting in tangents (but I would probably do it too if I were in your place ;)).
I too would like a black Day of Judgment. As for the bounce-mageddon you have Sunder or Parallax Tide, but neither of those cards convinces me.
I'm looking forward to the next episode, keep it up.
Thanks for the input! We recorded this one and the next one on the same day (pretend they are recorded weeks apart, we do!) so there might not be much improvement in the tangents until the next set we record. The next one we have lined up is for build-around-me cards we wanted to highlight. Any suggestions for future lists?
My ideal blue white armageddon would probably be:
Azorius Armageddon - 2WU
Sorcery
Return all lands to their owner's hands.
But I doubt that would ever see print. Commander sets?!
It doesn't appear to be downloadable at the moment. I'd second that request. I only listen to podcasts while driving, so if I can't download the audio, I won't be able to listen.
I'll see what we can do. My brother does all the uploading and soundcloud stuff so I just asked him about it. I think we are going to move them to mtgcast asap and see how that goes.
I just started listening to the first 'cast today. Not a terrible start. I like the informality of the conversation. It's exactly what a bystander would hear from my kitchen on cube night and I like that. What I did not like about the informality of the show was that it just kind of came on. It felt like everyone was sitting around bull*****ting and then someone randomly pressed record in the middle. Episode two seems to start the same way. I love the Third Power podcast because of their tangents and informal approach to the medium, but I also like these types of things to have some sort of structure. I'd recommend starting each episode a little less randomly. Maybe some theme music, a quick trip around the table with hello this is so and so intro, this is Listing Things, and today we'll be talking about this topic. That's quick and easy and then boom right into the random conversational format.
Another thing is that I guess you guys are all literally sitting around a table with an open mic. Is that right? Not that that's an issue, but it seems like some people are more audible than others.
With that said, I did really like the content and the personalities of all the hosts. You guys all seem like guys that would definitely be welcome at my kitchen table for cube night. These are the types of personalities that I want to listen to on my cube casts.
In regards to how we start the podcast, I am a huge Marc Maron fan and I kind of wanted to do the same kind of non intro that he does where he turns the mic on as they are mid conversation. He typically gives an intro before that but I wanted to try it just coming in all "in media res". We will think about an intro though as I understand where you are coming from.
You are correct about the format of us just sitting around a table chatting. The sound was probably better in the second episode but still we are going to do a better job about making sure the levels are good when we record the next set of them.
One of the requirements for submitting to MTGCast is that it has to have a good descriptive name so I decided to change the title to Lists for Cubes to avoid any confusion and fit their guidelines better.
I appreciate the nice words about the group of us. Sam and I are brothers so there is a lot of love and fighting that will probably come with that whole territory but in a "we love each other and fight like brothers" type of way. Alex is a great friend as well and I am hoping to get the rest of my playgroup to be on the show. A lot of them have confidence issues when it comes to how much they "know" about the cube and they don't want to sound stupid or have nothing interesting to say. I kind of think that might be more interesting to get a newer and fresher perspective on the genre of magic we all love. We will see. This is all still very new.
Listened to episode 2 today. Although you say they were recorded in the same day two weeks apart this episode was better the the first one. Your chemistry makes a great show and I felt that the random tangents did not break the episode's flow, which was quite nice. The silly laughter/sad trombone combo was actually quite funny. Your 'intern' deserves a cookie for its impecable timing of sound effect use.
Your "build around me" choices were solid and your arguments felt well structured. I am actually trying to push a tokens theme and I must confess I did not have Twilight Drover on my radar. It was an interesting idea, but I'm not sure it's not a bit parasitic and a bit underwhelming for my taste, but feel free to prove me wrong. I also think Armada Wurm makes a pretty good Natural Order target as well as a good Venser, the Sojourner target, so you may want to consider it.
I completely agree with your analysis regarding cards that some consider "too powerful". Although I understand that point of view, I agree that everyone has access to them, that there is actually an opportunity cost to draft them, you have to actually draw the cards, and that there are powerful answers in cube as well. I think one should pay a little more attention to them during cube design (for example, you may want to consider Unravel the Aether instead of Naturalize so you can deal with Wurmcoil Engine and Blightsteel Colossus, or you may want to have 1/2 extra edicts so you can deal with True-Name Nemesis), but even if the game ends "too soon", well, you can just play another game!
The only problem I had is that your voices are too similar to each other (!), so sometimes it's hard to figure out who said what, but there's obviously nothing you can do about it, and I'm sure that with time a person gets used to it. All in all, this was a good and entertaining episode! If future episodes keep up with this one, you may have won a loyal listener.
I will be submitting the second one shortly. There isn't anything you haven't heard if you heard the first two already but I just wanted to get this out there to people who maybe waited to listen!
Its been a while! We just discuss the last five cuts and why they were cut. We also go over a pack from Sam's cube and discuss what we would take for first picks.
Sam, Pete, and Alex discuss some of the weird and questionable card choices in the MTGO cube. We also go over a pack from their cube and do a P1P1 discussion. I also make a list of the 12 cards I would have added from M15 instead of the 12 cards Wizards added from M15.
My brother and I and some friends started a podcast where we list things in various cube related topics and we just released our first one here:
