I really like Trading Post, and I always have. I even brought it up in my M13 article, but it was kind of shrugged off by everyone (myself included). I may try it out in my colorless section and see how it does, now that I support more of the types of cards it interacts with.

Trading Post is a definitely a great engine that does all kinds of good things, but it is also slow as molasses. If durdle.dec is something that works in your cube and is something your players like to draft, I think it's a great card.
I was actually looking at Briarhorn the other day. Let me know if you get around to testing him in your current build. I agree that making green more interactive is key to giving it some depth. Honestly, I think we just need to keep seeing solid spells. I'd love to see green closer to 55/45 creatures-to-lands.
I've had Briarhorn in my cube for a while and he's a beast... He's just a 3/3 Flash dude for 4 that messes everything up. He can even go toe to toe with some of the strongest cards like Titans, and if you have ways to blink or bounce him like Restoration Angel or Crystal Shard he can easily make it impossible for your opponents to accomplish much combat wise.

I shrugged it off when I first saw it too, but recently I've added it to my cube and while it hasn't been busted, it's pretty good. It's kind of crazy with Thopter Foundry but even without it in the artifact decks it turns your mana rocks into Mind Stones which is cool because going heavy on mana rocks can lead to awkward draws at times. It also gives those durdle decks a great way to become stable thanks to the life gain while also acting as various outlets for them.
I really liked that last podcast. It's given me a much clearer idea of what the pox archetype is trying to do.
I think I'm going to try for an integrated "graveyard matters" theme in black. Reanimator is already pushed hard, but some of the pox package would run well alongside that. I had a moderately successful reanimator/land destruction deck in my last draft, and it could work to draw these two archetypes together.
Thanks again for the podcast, and for answering my questions in it!
"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less." -Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass
Im a podcast addicted, have never cubed, and I much prefer limtied to constructed, so its been a while since i wanted not only to get into the format, but to make my own cube and introduce it to my friends. There are a couple of people that sometimes draft a junk cube (not really a cube, its made from trash collections and a few good cards), and then theres another group that does random drafts with good cards from their collections (and call it a cube despite not really being one), but besides that, my area is cube virgin.
I thought about starting with a pauper, or maybe peasant cube, since i have no big disposable income. And with that in mind, i began to search out resources for a newcomer in cube. Since i am so familiar with the podcast midia (and im an In Contention fan too), i started to listen to your new cast (I also plan on hearing The Third Power, but its episode count is intimidating).
I have very much enjoyed the first and third episodes (i skipped the second), and ill soon listen to the pauper one. They have been very helpful in making me more aware of the formats fundamentals, but I still have tons to learn.
Id like to listen to some of the basics, like how to start, how to evaluate cards for the format, and maybe even some numbers. The problem is, I imagine most of the shows public must already know many of those things and may have no interest in them. Maybe you could point useful starting points (It should be easy to find then on my own, but its always interesting hearing other peoples suggestions).
Still, im looking forward to listening all episodes already done and the many to come. Thanks for the show, its been really enjoyable so far, even for a cube newbie such as myself.

I would definitely suggest trying to get Bazaar in the mix. I'm actually really curious to see your build. I think it'd be really good with everything I'm pushing in black already. I recently added Stinkweed Imp after watching it crush in Coop's cube. I wouldn't be surprised to Oath of Ghouls make a comeback

Oh man, Thopter Foundry? This seems very interesting to me. Do you have [card]Sword of the Meek]/card] or do you just use it as a value card?

If you have any topics you think would help for your foray into cube drafting, I can certainly put them on my to-do list or for my next mailbag article. The link provided by obiwan is a good start. There are a ton of articles out on the internet on Channel Fireball, StarCityGames.com, CubeDrafting.com, and this here very site. In your series of archetype discussion episodes you should discuss "the artifact deck". It's one of those funny archetypes that actually span over most of the colors depending on how you implement it.
Just listened to the first episode, you two have a good dynamic and bounce off each other well. Next time I work night shift I think I'll go on a marathon for the rest of them.
Oh man, Thopter Foundry? This seems very interesting to me. Do you have [card]Sword of the Meek]/card] or do you just use it as a value card?
Yes actually, and because the cube is on the smaller side (400 cards total) the combo shows up rather often.
However, Thopter Foundry is a card I've found to be good without the sword in a lot of situations. For example, it's awesome with a card like Trading Post or Goblin Welder as it can basically let you recur that big artifact dude a ton while giving you some life. The same is true with Recurring Nightmare, it lets you both sacrifice your artifact creature and gives you a dude or artifact to sacrifice for other things...
Honestly I've found Foundry to be a card that's very useful in a surprising amount of ways, much like Entomb. Even if you're just getting awesome value out of your Perilous Myr and not doing broken things with the other enablers.
Edit: You can also team it up with Volrath's Stronghold or Academy Ruins to do some neat grindy things with a Solemn or Perilous Myr, if not larger dudes.
Sure 4U or 4B isn't great for Shock + Gain 1 life + make a 1/1 flier + Potentially Fog a target creature. Especially since you're drawing that card, but you can also do it twice in one turn if you sac the Myr on your upkeep and then draw it to do it again.

Would like to hear your take on it.
I almost did that for this week's topic, but figure I'd take a slightly different approach. It's more likely that I'll do an artifact-centric episode in the same vein as I've done the other colors. That will allow me to review the archetype as well as some non-traditional artifact builds and even something like the artifact cube. My mind is racing just thinking about it

I'm definitely considering giving it a spin. My issue isn't really with Thopter Foundry more than it is with the Sword. I just don't know that there are enough ways to abuse it outside of the random situation you mise it on a Nether Traitor or Reassembling Skeleton or have it out with a Trading Post (another recent addition). Does it go undrafted otherwise?
Very good job with "The Black Episode", very interesting discussion! If I still had my cube I would totally swift some things around and try the archetype discussed.
For future archetype discussion suggestions:
Boros Aggro
Lands matter - different takes on fixing, landcycles and discussion about utility lands like Treetop Village, Library of Alexandria, Academy Ruins etc etc
Thanks, Matti! I am very much looking forward to the white-based aggro episode (including Boros) as it's always been one of my favorite archetypes in the cube. Lands will likely be a part of the Gatecrash discussion as we all have to decide what we're going to do with our inflated multicolor sections.

Well, it's hard to say. The cube is roughly 400 cards in size, so in a 6-8 man draft we generally see both cards and as such people either take it with the other piece or they hate draft it most of the time. However, I've drafted it a couple times just because it's an equipment and gives an ok bonus.
Also, I hadn't really considered it with something like Trading Post and a guy that keeps coming back like Skeleton or Traitor to get more value out of it each turn. Even Bitter Blossom brings it back each turn. Then there are cards like Goblin Welder who can bring it back to not only help itself survive but make better use of it afterwards. Not to mention the random occasion on which it comes back to make a 1/1 more relevant later in the game, and this has come up in situations where my foundry was removed and I just had the Sword in the yard.
All and all, I think there's a lot of potential to the Sword to be explored that just hasn't been looked at yet due to how good it is with Foundry.
Seems like you've been going through the colors in your last few. Maybe you could do something on Red eventually ; p. Looking forward to future episodes.
I find your podcast awesome! I like that you keep the editing tight with very little segway. I am looking forward to more of your color breakdowns as something I'm struggling with at the moment is trying to give my multicolor section more identity
I like the last three podcasts a ton! They've given me a lot of insight into possible directions to take my cube as well as confirming some of my beliefs.
For some reason the feed stops every two minutes... I tried downloading the mp3 but that also stops, I'll try another browser in a few.
I enjoy your pod-casts as well. The one about blue puts probably the final nail in the coffin for Bribery. I want to cut that card for a long time now, but they* don't let me.

All and all, I think there's a lot of potential to the Sword to be explored that just hasn't been looked at yet due to how good it is with Foundry.
I'm definitely willing to give it a shot. I think the random synergy with the newly minted black section might push it over the top for me. My only apprehension is my cube is a little on the big side.

Heh, I am happy to help My group is pretty good about me making cuts given that there's at least one or more updates each week. Cards like Bribery leave a noticeable hole. Gotta love those conversations:
I agree on Bribery and I never even included it in my cube despite what some people said about it. Then again my cube was more about Fish, Combo-esque interactions, and Mid range, so Bribery was never going to be that great.

Edit:

Yea, the cards have a lot of fun little synergies and the sword still gives a decent buff as +1/+2 isn't all that little when it comes to some creatures. Though Thopter Foundry will see a lot more love, the Sword still isn't bad with things like Trading Post seeing as it can keep coming back to draw you cards give you have some kind of token generation or 1/1 recursion.
It's also a card you don't mind discarding to things like Looters or whatever, and it can really make the difference against an Arc Lightning, Firebolt, or Staggershock when you have some relevant 1/1 dude. Like a 2/3 Deranged Hermit will survive a Mortar Pod and much more than a 1/1 Hermit.
I'm having this issue too. I use Firefox and every time I download one of these it will freeze up and I'll have to pause the download and resume it every few minutes or so.
Hmm. I'll talk to Gathering Magic and see if they can set up a new feed. I'll let you all know. It may be a little slow moving to get that done, unfortunately, but I'll do my best.
Recording a new episode tomorrow with Andy Cooperfaus. Our main topic of discussion is going to be red. We've got a number of items on the agenda, but are there any specific areas you'd like us to try and cover?
Hi kojiori.
I listend to the Last episode on black and become a Fan Of your great Content. In my playgroup in Aachen, Germany, we were wondering how much red mass removal (pyroclasm, slag storm, Rolling earthquake, earthquake, mizzium mortars, bonfire, crater hellion...) Would be good for a cube. Our cube has about 550 cards.
Right now i am running: bonfire, both earthquakes pyeoclasm and the hellion as well as 2 wildfires.
The quesrion that arose in Diskussions is the following.... Does thia much red mass removal harm archetypes like BR-Aggro, WW and green based aggro Decks too much to make a healthy environment. How Do you two deal with the section if red mass removal.
Kind regards
Markus
