After some suggestions from the community and a lot of internal discussion, we're looking at making a new Pauper/Peasant Discussion Subforum in the Cube Forum. This subforum would facilitate all Pauper/Peasant cube discussion, such as new projects, SCDs, and MCDs. We're excited about this opportunity to better support the growing Pauper/Peasant communities and we want to know what you think.
This chiefly concerns the Pauper/Peasant cubists, but everyone is welcome to weigh in. What do you think of this subforum? And why? We're interested in your opinions and thoughts before we go through with this change.
Would Peasant and Pauper discussion be combined in SCD threads about commons?
I should hope not, cards need to be evaluated very differently in the context of their own format.
I support the idea of new subforums for these, being able to have threads dedicated to specific cards is much better than the messiness of everything being in a single thread.

I think SCD and MCD should remain where they are, most of the discussion is applicable to all types of cubes. However I agree Pauper Peasant could use their own discussion sub forum on ratings, articles and such.
Even if you separate Pauper Peasant into their own SCD you run into the issue that some will be both and some will be only peasant. Even in the main Card discussion forum you have Powered cubes vs. unpowered vs. themed. Every one of those is going to have a different take on a card and all of that imput is relevant. A number of times I've read pauper reviews of cards and gave those cards a second shot (in my powered cube). Players that play pauper/peasant get more excited about cards that otherwise don't get quite as much discussion and evaluation. I think the whole community can benefit from this.
That being said, all the articles on pauper and evaluations on the main forum could be moved to a pauper/peasant subforum. I think that would be great.
The main benefit will be to let discussion breathe a little more since we can have individual SCD/MCD threads. If the subforum is buried a couple levels deep, I do worry about getting new traffic in.
I'm fine for trying it out as long as we have the option to revert back if it doesn't work out well.
Pauper cube should have more support. It's like the king of all cubes! I think pauper is a lot more fun, and presents more of a challenge than cube drafting TheDeck.Dec does. You actually have to *think* when confronted with crappy commons :D.
All-in-all, I think people give too much credit to playing around with "the most awesome cards." It's way more fun to give people a bunch of trash and see what they can do with it.
Why... when I was a lad, my best friend and I used to build decks out of his 2 or 3 boxes of crappy throw away cards (this was like 1995). Then we would show down. Little did we know, we were on the way to inventing cube. If only we had thought to make the collection more concise... and then draft with others! Okay so it wasn't that close... but it was fun.
I do like the idea of being able to split some of the chatter that gets lumped into the Pauper/Peasant Discussion Threads into separate [SCD] / [MCD] threads within a subforum. I think it's worth a try at the very least.
There's enough Pauper/Peasant support now, and the discussion is entirely separate from traditional cube information. I agree that all discussion about C/Ubes should be contained in its own sub forum.
It would be nice, if unusual, to get our own area. Conversations get hurried in the superthread.
The latter has been bugging me a little. It goes like one guy drops a card name, three to four give an evaluation, done. There's hardly any in-depth responding the way we have it for instance with Sakura Tribe-Elder now.
I think a subforum for our SCDs, MCDs and Archetypes would be great.
Specialities about the cube: U tempo, B aggro, R slow-ish are supported. G aggro is not.
Currently trying to support tokens in all colors but blue, in different ways: W pumps them, B sacrifices them, R suicides them, G has decent-sized ones.

Soo...there is currently a SCD for the card, and in it you can discuss ANYTHING related to it, regardless of cube type. you are complaining that there is hardly any in-depth responding yet what is stopping anyone from having these discussions in the current thread? Separating them and making them even harder to find is sub-forums isn't going to increase the contribution level. It will however let a more select few to have a more clear voice. This I understand, but I think you will find that the accidental interest in Pauper and Peasant will go away somewhat when it is separated from the rest of the forum.
We are really just starting to get busy as far as interest is concerned. We do not want to make it even harder for visitors to find the information they are looking for. Honestly I think there should be one single sub-forum for "Themed Cubes" (AKA pauper, Peasant, Multiplayer, Tribal, T4, etc) these get lost in the sea of generic powered and unpowered cubes.
it'd be nice to not get discussion of pauper / peasant / powered / unpowered in the same scd / mcd, since you have a ridiculously wild array of different evaluations clustering in the same place. the megathreads are fine though imo, so i don't mind either way really.
Would this be as a 'sub-sub-forum' of Card/Archetype Discussion like the current New Card Discussion section?
Ah, no. The plan so far is for the new subforum to be added to the main Cube Forum directory.
While a majority of the threads/discussion would indeed be card discussion, the subforum would also be available for projects and other Pauper/Peasant-related threads.
That being said, all the articles on pauper and evaluations on the main forum could be moved to a pauper/peasant subforum. I think that would be great.
Articles and set reviews are not planned to be moved for now. This is a direction we've decided to take after some internal discussion. We're looking to gauge at what the subforum actually looks like after a few weeks/months of being up before revisiting the topic with hopefully more information to work with.
Would Peasant and Pauper discussion be combined in SCD threads about commons?
Not always. The default would be separate threads for Pauper and Peasant, with tags ([Pauper] and [Peasant]) available to separate them. The two formats are very different, and while I do imagine Pauper regulars will join in on Peasant SCDs and vice versa, it makes more sense for separate threads to denote what format is being discussed.
Players that play pauper/peasant get more excited about cards that otherwise don't get quite as much discussion and evaluation. I think the whole community can benefit from this.
While I really support the sentiment, as it stands right now, the communities (normal vs. Pauper/Peasant) are very isolated in their discussion. As LeeLue said, this is almost necessary as the formats being discussed are very different and have drastically different power levels. Cross-community input most often happens between Pauper and Peasant and almost never happens between normal cubes and Pauper/Peasant (Pauper to a greater extent as the power level gap is considerable).
Furthermore, things like set reviews are still planned to stay in the Articles sub, so they would be available for normal cubists to take a fresh perspective on commons.
In the end, it's a question of whether this isolation is enough to cancel the potential advantages of the new subforum for the Pauper/Peasant communities. As it stands, I do not believe it does.
Unfortunately, no. The concern that there are too many subfora is very real, and multiplayer cubes does not have enough weight as a community yet to warrant a subforum. I also address the question of combining multiplayer and other theme formats with the proposed Pauper/Peasant subforum below.
Soo...there is currently a SCD for the card, and in it you can discuss ANYTHING related to it, regardless of cube type. you are complaining that there is hardly any in-depth responding yet what is stopping anyone from having these discussions in the current thread? This I understand, but I think you will find that the accidental interest in Pauper and Peasant will go away somewhat when it is separated from the rest of the forum.
The issue at hand is that Pauper/Peasant discussion gets lost if they are simply thrown into these current SCD threads. Not all Pauper/Peasant cubists check all these discussion threads that are mainly discussing the normal cube format. For that reason, even now discussions have basically retreated to their major format discussion threads, which restricts their ability to generate more in-depth discussion for cards. You can draw parallels with how discussion increased when the Cards & Archetype Discussion subforum was opened to replace the Card Evaluation thread. A new subforum we hope will allow multiple lines of discussion on different cards to be held simultaneously while not being drowned out by normal cube discussion.
Actually I like the idea of a themed cube subforum instead of just purely for pauper/peasant.
The original idea of the subforum was indeed an "Alternate Cube Format" that included multiplayer, tribal, graveyard, etc.
The major argument against this, however, is that the communities supporting Pauper/Peasant are much larger than the rest of these theme formats. It would lead to these other alternate formats being flooded by the larger volumes of discussion generated by the former, in much the same way as Pauper/Peasant is right now by normal cube discussion.
In addition, these alternate cube formats do not yet have the weight in their communities to be cut off inside a subforum as Pauper/Peasant does. They are much more supported by the wider (normal) cube community than Pauper/Peasant, and are better suited to be out in the open for more exposure that way.
I actually think I would participate more in pauper/peasant discussion if it wasn't confined to the megathreads. I rarely check those, but I generally flip through all the sub-forums, so by default, I'll likely see what's going on in the new sub-forum. I think it will provide more traffic from the whole community as a sub-forum.
This sounds like an excellent plan. I was musing on designing a Pauper Cube the other night and very quickly got overwhelmed by the 50 page thread. A separate sub-forum with it's own S/MCDs would be very helpful.
I am conflicted about having a new subforum. I think it would help the discussion, but at the same time it would reduce exposure to other players. There is one thing I would really really like, and it's pretty simple: thread tags to differentiate between different types of cubes. For example; [EDH], [Multiplayer], [Pauper], [Peasant].
So we could post multiple threads in the card and archetype discussion for each individual card (one for each cube type), like
[SCD][Peasant] Experiment One and
[SCD] Experiment One
That would separate the peasant discussions and the regular discussions without messing with either threads visibility.
It would be sweet to be able to dedicate entire threads to specific peasant archetypes.
[Archetype][Peasant] Blue Tempo
or
[MCD][Pauper] Basic Landcyclers
I feel like that would be easy to do, and wouldn't mess with anything that was already in place. That way, if it got big enough, you could always separate them to a new subforum later if you ever felt the need.

We can't stack software defined tags.
We do have a test version of the Peasant/Pauper sub however. It's currently set to have tags like [Pauper SCD] to draw distinctions. Is that what you're describing?
And the problem of having them in the main C&AD forum is that they are totally unrelated to normal cube discussion. It creates a lot of scroll-worthy threads clogging the main index for non-pauper/peasant cubists, while at the same time making them compete for space on the index with traditional cubes. In short, I think it makes life worse for all involved.
We think the P/P cube community has some real strength, and I see them like a second cube forum from back in March. We're hoping to give you guys the ability to expand and grow like the rest of the community did.

The same problem we have in the peasant megathread: It's two discussions woven into one.

This I understand, but I think you will find that the accidental interest in Pauper and Peasant will go away somewhat when it is separated from the rest of the forum.
Giving it a separate subforum gives it more legitimation. Not that it's lacking this in any way at all, but people seeing "hey, they even have an own subforum, maybe it's something I should consider" might subconsciously make pauper/peasant more appealing to them.
We are really just starting to get busy as far as interest is concerned. We do not want to make it even harder for visitors to find the information they are looking for.
SCDs are great for organizing information, that's definitely worth the extra subforum click. In the superthread, once information is buried about five pages deep, it's pretty much lost and people need to ask about the same thing again.
Honestly I think there should be one single sub-forum for "Themed Cubes" (AKA pauper, Peasant, Multiplayer, Tribal, T4, etc) these get lost in the sea of generic powered and unpowered cubes.
Multi, Tribal, T4 etc are very marginal in numbers. Wherever you want to allocate them, but grouping them with p/p makes p/p feel a little more, how do I put it, like an odd idea, like the other cube variants, but I think they deserve to be bumped up to full-blown cube variants. Again, subconscious legitimation.

If cube represented a large enough commitment from magic players where it had it's own active forum, I would support this. As it is just a sub forum of a larger magic web site I do not feel it warrents it's own subforum.

I don't think you read it correctly then. I was in no way suggesting that we not separate P/P from the standard cube discussion. I am suggesting that there is a risk that there actually might be less traffic and interest if the "incidental" viewer does not see P/aP cubes and such a long with standard ones. I am bringing up +/- because its important to see all of the possible effects. Knowing that there might be an issue would give the mods possible ways to overcome the problems. For instance, a person my not know what Pauper/Peasant is. In the title of the subforum it might make sense to indicate (common/uncommon) so that people get a clearer message.
Simple stuff like that gets people to click on things.
P.S. thanks for everyone's articulate response to my other posts
I likely misinterpreted your tone, if that is the case.
Its all good, I'm just playing devils advocate. I would love the P&P forum to be productive, active, and popular. I play pauper competitively on MTGO and am putting together the gauntlet IRL so I know its a fun and healthy format.
My biggest fear, and this is has always been a concern, is that a vine like forum is hard to navigate. After discovering cube for myself a few years ago I can easily say its my favorite format. There is no other forum for discussion that I feel is as productive as this so it is to our advantage to make it as clean as possible.
My best advice is to get the new P&P forum up and running but to keep an eye on ways to improve its visibility. Potentially things will need to be changed in the future as more themed ideas become more common. At that point the structure might need to change again.
