2011 Pauper Power Rankings!!
The second time coming of Pauper-tastic rankings.
Welcome back!
It's been a fun 15+ months since our last successful foray into the wild world of Pauper Rankings, hasn't it? Really, we should've gotten this rerun done during June - July, like I said I would; but things got in the way, and I totally forgot like the idiot I am.
Oh well, better late than never.
So anyway, let's get into it. This is the Results thread for the 2011 Pauper Power Rankings. This will be where all the results from the Voting thread (link at the bottom of the post) will be collated.
But before that, a basic introduction.
What on earth is the Pauper Power Rankings? We're a Pauper Cube project based on the older Cube Power Rankings, run by Silent Edge (kudos to that brilliant bastard). The main pount of the Power Rankings is to rank the top 20 cards, in picking order (i.e. which you would pick P1P1), for each section of the cube, as well as overall at the end. As always, projects like these are meant for Pauper cubists to improve their cube, giving them an idea of what cards should be in the cube and a glimpse of how to draft it.
In the Voting thread, and under a schedule, you'll submit Top 20 lists for each of the sections. 1st place gets 20 points, 2nd gets 19, and so on. Then, we take some averages and create a final list, the list to end all lists, which will be reproduced here, in the Results thread, along with some facts and trivia that'll be mildly interesting. We finish up at the end, and then pat ourselves on the back and shelve away another great Pauper cube resource.
So, good? Good. This is the thread for discussing results, so discuss anything you feel is wrong or right.
4 voters for this round~
Dragoon, Izor, Lanxal and Rubin.
Random Ramblings & Rave Reviews By that much - Ha! Whatever do you mean? Everyone voted for the same 10 cards! Common Knowledge - Every card in the list above was on every list! Blockbusters - Terramorphic Expanse / Evolving Wilds got all the 10s this time! Pet Cards - Again, what pet cards? Every card got 4 out of 4 possible votes!
5 voters for this final round~
Dragoon, Izor, knuckles29, Lanxal and Rubin! Awesome for sticking to the end! (Except Lanxal. I hear that guy's stupid.)
I'm just curious why Guardian of the Guildpact was ranked higher than Faith's Fetters by most people. I understand it's amazing in pauper cube, I don't doubt its power level at all, but p1p1, I would pick Fetters over it every time. Maybe it's just my play style, but I'd rather have the splashable removal over a splashable creature (I typically don't like to splash for creatures unless they're good utility creatures.) Is it just play style? Is everyone way more aggressive than me?
Asking out a girl is like trying to cast a first turn Necropotence. Sometimes the other player will have the Force of Will to say no. You shouldn't let that stop you from trying it.

It is playstyle, but it's not about aggressiveness. Fetters is a rock - it is always really good and is extremely reliable. Guardian is a coin flip - even one activation of Serrated Arrows, an untapped Perilous Myr, an aggressive strategy with lots of guys with evasion, multicoloured removal, large multicoloured or colourless creatures etc. pretty much blank the card - but in any other case it can simply win games that Fetter's wouldn't come close to sealing.
Guardian is a card with higher variance that is better in bad decks, Fetters makes bad decks okay but good decks even better. I like Fetters more.
I don't think I would call him a miniature Progenitus. Yeah, he does have protection from 90% of the cube, but he's still a 10 turn clock on his own and he doesn't immediately swing the game. Fetters can.

I think Guardian and Faith's Fetters is just a really close comparison power level-wise. Faith's Fetters is very versatile removal that always does good when it lands. Guardian isn't as reliable, but it has a much bigger impact on the game when it works (which is often). It's just jarring to play against, and it forces your opponent to dig for answers or succumb. Guardian also takes any advantage you have, like a higher life total or an opponent's that slightly out of steam, and runs it home, while Faith's Fetters is far better when you're behind (it lets you come back from a beating against both aggro and midrange so easily). I simply like Guardian because it's just capable of taking games by itself, which is something you can't say for Fetters. Additionally, because I think the power levels are so similar, it can come down to recent experiences with one or the other, and I've had seen Guardian do good in the past few drafts.

Guardian has actually sucked here for the last few times - in sealed, where it usually rocks. Turns out running 3 MD answers for it is more than enough for it to be hardly insane and it just bricks against BW, UW and even BR decks that have enough evasive creatures. Though it's still second on my list!
In my 510 peasant cube, guardian has achieved hate draft stature because of everything Izor just said. there are a few more answers in my cube, but that's because I forced answers in to deal with him. If your losing to an evasive creature, then yes its not useful. In every other situation, Guardian has the potential to be the deciding factor in the game, every game.
I don't think he swings the game at all (Maybe not "at all," but I don't think his impact is quite that great, especially if you're behind.) He can't really take you from a losing board state to a winning board state, while Fetters can. That's the deciding factor for me.
Asking out a girl is like trying to cast a first turn Necropotence. Sometimes the other player will have the Force of Will to say no. You shouldn't let that stop you from trying it.
True enough. Faith's Fetters helps you get out of losing situations very well, while Guardian of the Guildpact is best used (IMO) to taking a winning situation, however slight, and taking it home.
I think that's the most reasonable point (for me, at least) to consider Faith's Fetters over Guardian of the Guildpact when picking on P1P1.
I agree that it looks very good, aside from one thing.
I'm really curious why people rate Ashes to Ashes so high. This is something I cannot understand at all. That card is far from making even top 20 for me and I've even considered cutting it from my cube.
I'm trying to understand it's strength. But obviously it's flaws are far more relevant. 3 mana remove two creatures sounds great, but the fact that your opponent gets a free Lava Axe (a solid 5 mana spell) is very relevant. Also, removing a second creature is not optional. I've seen people play that card so often and in more than half of the cases it was absolutely terrible and lost the game.
It's devastating if your opponent doesn't have two creatures you can target. Then you usually have to pay 1BB, 5 life and sac a creature in order to get a Dark Banishing. Or you can't cast it at all, for example if there's only one creature you can tagret on the field or if your life is 5 or less. Also, even if you can hit two creatures from your opponent, if the second one is a mana dude or another irrelevant dude, it's still absolutely not worth paying 5 life to kill that as well.
All in all, the only instance where it is actually good is when your opponent has at least two insane creatures on the field. Like Errant Ephemeron plus Kavu Primarch. For me that has happened exactly zero times. But I've lost countless games because I had to target my own creature or my opponent's mana elf or simply because I couldn't cast it due to the life loss.
Maybe people are overrating it because it's actually much better in rare cubes, where you can very often hit 2 5/5 Flyers and such with it. But in a format where there are just no such bombs, you'll rarely ever hit a second creature that's worth the 5 life. And at that point, Rend Flesh is more reliable and just better.
Because it is the best card in the cube in dedicated aggro decks.
You don't run it in any deck, it's terrible in maybe half the decks that people try to put it in. Decks that are aiming to keep their life total high obviously don't want to pay 5 life for pretty much anything, Ashes to Ashes included.
But a very aggressive deck that is light on removal and/or want to save burn to go for the throat wants it more than maybe anything else. In decks with 6 one drops, removing a second creature for 5 life is worth it even if it's a 1/1. Plus, the card is very rarely terrible in these kinds of decks, because when the five life becomes relevant, you're already losing anyway. Plus, you're winning when the opponent only has one creature, and you have lots of small guys so removing one of your own guys is sometimes the right play).
My aggro decks love cards that can answer more than one blocker - Rushing River, Undo, Lava Dart, Staggershock, etc. Ashes to Ashes is the king of this very specific kind of card, which is amazing in a very specific deck and not really anywhere else.
Pretty much what Rubin said. 5 life is harsh but it's incredibly powerful in certain decks. P1P1, I can pick Ashes to Ashes and have a good chance of drafting towards that kind of deck.
While I understand the number shifts from one year to the next, Blue has me curious. Flood was off the radar, and in my circle I removed it because I was the only one who liked it (tabling a top pick isn't fair IMO).
WHAT THE F in the A happened between last year and this?

WHAT THE F in the A happened between last year and this?
Flood is so broken. That's always been my playgroup's opinion, and mine, since the card went in (I think that was as soon as the cube was built?). Maybe my votings aren't really an accurate representation - but the card is so sick. Especially in heavy-blue aggro, which is rare, but nevertheless flood and ground pressure is just disgusting.
Actually, I think it should be higher than it is this year. Maybe next year?
Haha, that's awesome. Reminds me a bit of my gf. Her favorite card is Grazing Gladeheart and she'll pick it over everything else. She lately passed me Rolling Thunder and Sprout Swarm.
As of Flood, I agree that it's pure awesomeness. Actually also in controllish builds, not inly in aggro as long as you're heavily blue. No idea why it was ranked so low last time, I didn't follow the evaluation back then.
I have a friend that ALWAYS drafts RW "aggro" which is just all the three drops that have evasion. Like, Thermal Glider.dec (but it got cut :/ )
Yeah, it's almost always played in blue control. I just thought I'd give it a whirl in blue aggro and see how it did, and it was even better. I was pretty surprised.
What I find funny is that neither guildmage was voted on by everyone (and they were ranked a lot lower because of this). I get that I could be overrating them, but not by much I don't think because they shut games down in ways that few other cards can. 3 mana pingers are good because them playing x/1s becomes unprofitable and it can clean up anything that's already on board (albeit slightly slowly). One mana pingers, especially on the play, can mean that they pretty much cannot get any value out of their x/1s for the entire game. Worst case scenario, they use removal on it. On a one drop.

Guardian has actually sucked here for the last few times - in sealed, where it usually rocks. Turns out running 3 MD answers for it is more than enough for it to be hardly insane and it just bricks against BW, UW and even BR decks that have enough evasive creatures. Though it's still second on my list!

I think that's the most reasonable point (for me, at least) to consider Faith's Fetters over Guardian of the Guildpact when picking on P1P1.

Anyway, I've last picked Capsize

I have a friend that ALWAYS drafts RW "aggro" which is just all the three drops that have evasion. Like, Thermal Glider.dec (but it got cut :/ )
Yeah, it's almost always played in blue control. I just thought I'd give it a whirl in blue aggro and see how it did, and it was even better. I was pretty surprised.

Crazily enough, we had double winners this time: both Armadillo Cloak and Jilt had the exact same scoreset (20, 20, 19, 17, 16).
