My girlfriend and I have been playing around with her old magic cards lately. It's fun, but after a bit playing the same few decks over and over it has become a bit old.
While she has other cards, I don't think either of us want to sort through them to make a cube, and most of the more interesting ones are in decks already - which we don't want to dismantle. She also doesn't have enough lands that aren't in decks to support a cube anyway.
I like the idea of draft style limited play, but don't want to invest a lot to play casually. I had the idea of of making a bundle pack (fat pack) into effectively a stand alone game of magic. It comes with all the lands, plus enough cards to do a sealed draft or two, before using it like a cube (which would be large enough that you wouldn't guarantee seeing the same cards each game). Right now this seems to be the most cost effective option to have varied mtg play. For Aether Revolt this would be about $28.
If we liked this we could always expend, or modify the cube cards.
Other options I considered were just buying boosters in a store, plus a stack of 100 lands for $5 on ebay, or buying a "repack" booster box, and lands but those options all seems to be significantly more money.
Any thoughts on this, anything I might not be considering?
Thanks for the response, definitely considered your cube, and other's, but honestly I just didn't want to take the time to hunt down the best price on all the individual cards.
Here's what I decided to do: After further research I realized Aether Revolt really is just a small expansion, so I decided to back up to the "core" set of Kaladesh. A bundle for Kaladesh is ~$40, so I set that as my price target. After looking around at a lot of different options, I decided to buy a DBTK plus 6 extra boosters - totaling a bit less than the Bundle cost. This basically gives me the same experience as the bundle (besides having 2 of the booster's from before Kaladesh), slightly more land, and the fixed/semi-random cards for free.
It looks like the DBTK will allow me to build a fairly balanced, if lower power, cube (for up to 4 people) right off the bat - although it seems they tend to favor 2-3 colors by their semi-random nature. I'm hoping the boosters, once opened, will allow me to fill in/balance the colors, and expand the overall cube.
