With Kaladesh and my Old School Cube project done, I needed a new project to start up. That led me to searching through my collection, ripping apart my original MRD block collection and a couple of EDH decks, and spending some hours in the think tank during the weekend.
I was thinking of the following main themes for each color (apart from the colored artifact creatures, artifact removal and the like).
White: Equipment
Blue: Affinity
Black: Infect
Red: Sac
Green: Infect
The cube is going to be 360 cards. My current plan is 40 of each color (including the aforementioned artifacts that only works in a certain color), 120 artifacts spread over Creatures, Equipment and other, 20 multicolored cards and 20 lands (no mana-fixing lands of any kind, only artifact and utility lands).
Is this the correct distribution? And could the colors have other themes that makes sense?
360 is pretty tight but its a focused cube so why not.
Really like this idea and i think there is a lot of room here to mess around.
Blue Red and Whtie are pretty straight forward with how they interact with artifacts so for those colors its just a matter of fine tuning.
Infect seems like an interesting angel to go with for green and black. Thematically it fits with the second mirrodin set.
Green could play the spoiler color and be something you draft not to enhance your artifacts but destroy your opponents. Uktabi Orangutan and friends would be strong in this format. Also you probably want to work on the removal/powerful artifact ratio in this cube. Combos could run amok.
I could see going down to 36 of each color and shifting the rest to even more artifacts. I am very interested to see how this plays out.
Is Tezzeret 1 & 2 and dack too powerful for an artifact based cube?
As context I don't include fast mana, and I aim to make it feel like a powerful version of mirrodin drafting with various different archetypes. Control & mill strategies. Sac and recursion decks. Infect and proliferate. And more.
I'm just afraid they will be so good that they're almost instant win cards.
They would be very powerful but i think you can balance it out with a healthy dose of cards that can nuke PWs. Dreadbore and that Murder that hits walkers should be in. Green "destroy a non-creature" cards should be in there as well. Good Red burn can put a dent in them. run it and see what happens.
So Mirrodin has the highest conectration of artifacts and historically too much. People are having a hard time drafting because of too many choices.
I have the experience as well when I have 180 artifacts in my 360 artifact cube. I plan to drop down to 140 ish once I have my Kaladesh update because there are a lot of "colored artifacts" like Servo producers and Gearhulks.
Personally I do not carry Dack because I carry Saheeli, but I think planeswalkers are fine. There are a lot of removal for them (Vampire Hexmage works the best - also kills +1/+1 arcbounds and sunbursts). As for other colors, white has Nahiri, Lithomancer and Black has the aforementioned Tezzerets. Red has Darettis and green... well.
