The announcement was made here here, with another screen shot being available:
Now that you can Cube for FNM, will you? How would that even be implemented? Makes me want to put a cube back together and try to win some promos for it.
I would gladly play in an FNM cube, but I would never offer my cube up for use. I don't trust people I don't know around it, that is just asking for something to get stolen. Maybe someone a bit more trusting than me will do this.
I think cube would be a blast to have as an FNM format; might actually get me to hit up the local LGS every now and then. Whoever's cube it is should ensure that they have the cube shuffled and possibly even have packs made ahead of time, and that they have enough basics for however many people can draft the cube. If your FNM generally gets more people than one cube can support, then maybe some portion of the group could cube and another portion could play standard or booster draft or whatever.
Also, praise be to the people that have the time and stamina to Rotisserie draft for their FNM.
My store might have a cube where players donate the cards and can vote on additions and substitutions. At least, that's what I'm going to pitch to our store owner tomorrow. One of the guys that work there think it might be a worthwhile idea.
Total side note but I like how people are discussing running this over itself.
Well, it has to be said that Kolaghan is clearly better than Kolaghan. Considering what BR decks usually want and how stiff the competition in this guild is, there is no way that I would run Kolaghan over Kolaghan! Kolaghan might make it in as the sixth guild card or so. Kolaghan on the other hand ranks several places below that.
It was so funny to me when they described this as a downgrade to the original Zurgo during the Pax East panel. I was thinking if this is a downgrade, they should really "downgrade" all legendary creatures. Haha.
My deck designing is quite concise at this point:
1. Come up with deck idea
2. Realize this idea is somehow fundamentally similar to another deck I have or that is commonly played in my group
3. Decide I don't want to disassemble one of my existing decks
4. Give up and do nothing
I don't see the point of this new shroud mechanic. It's strictly worse than Hexproof. Threshold is pretty bad too, Delirium is a much better mechanic and probably easier to activate.
Otherwise this card is a pretty neat guy. Dodges removal and grows into a Primal Huntbeast. 3/5
I'll just quote my reply on the discussion thread:
That is sweet news. Some of the nicer store owners have been supplying my group with FNM foils here and there when we sanction our cube draft at their store, but now it's official and we can work more closely with shops for prize support and structure.
If you can get 8 of your friends the news is good news as you get proper prize support now. I wouldn't want to let strangers touch my cube though.
It's pretty awesome. I'd actually go to FNM if I could cube. Obviously theft is a problem but I've cube drafted at stores that proxied an entire list. So that would be one way they could avoid having to worry about someone's cards being stolen.

The problem is you can't use proxies in an official mtg event. The only exception is if the head judge issues one, which is a possible loophole to use, but it's still really sketchy.

Just invent a format that's a cube draft made entirely of proxies and then use that.

The best would be an LGS-owned cube, and then they can sanction it, perhaps through proxies. However, I would think the middle ground would be a non-foil pauper cube.
The only problem I see is the wear and tear of sleeves, coz not everyone shuffles in a responsible manner.
Can someone get in contact with MaRo (I would have no idea how to even start this task) and see if the judge requirement is enough to allow us to use proxies? Or if we can get around it by using a LGS-owned cube, etc. Basically any way for us to use proxies would be preferred so we can play with power and expensive cards.
I think the most prudent way to do this would to be work with your local store owner and make a pauper cube to be owned by the store. Low risk, consistent cube list, etc.

It is. The judge running the event determines which cards are allowable. So it will vary from Judge to Judge. GB/CE/IE will likely be more allowable than the stuff that's printed on someone's computer, because those cards are at least WotC product being put to intended use.
Yeah. Or walking away with decks, forgetting that they don't keep what they draft.
Even in pauper land it would be a pain in the ass to replace 45 cards when you don't know which 45 were taken.
Even with something like 2 cards missing, it's still a huge pain (especially if you don't update your cube tutor that often due to making many intermittent changes between cube tutor changes.) I had it happen where Spectral Procession and Cloudgoat Ranger were misplaced but thankfully were re-found.
The biggest issue would be theft, either intentional or accidental. I'm not really sure how you would be able to prevent it.
Theft can't ever be accidental. You mean people stealing and people forgetting to return sideboard cards?
This happens to my lighters ALL THE TIME.
It'd be awesome if you had (properly trained) security to pat people down who are going out of the room. Then you're free to use (show off) your own cube at the event. Kinda crazy to see bouncers at a LGS though!
