Hey guys, id like to make a very small cube oriented to play 1v1 drafts. Im rather new to drafting but I really like the idea of cubes, a card pool you can use to draft over and over which you can adjust to your liking and budget... im in
Heres the idea I came with:
Cube composition:
20 cards for each color
20 artifact/colorless cards
10 gold cards (1 for each 2 color combination)
10 hybrid cards (1 for each 2 color combination)
10 land cards (I still dont know if I should use dual lands for each combination or some less efficient lands that can produce more colors, like alaras uncommons)
Playing the cube:
Format 1 (short method):
-(optional) choose a color you dont want to draft with and take all cards from that color and gold, hybrid and land cards related to that color, this should leave us with a 4 color 118 cards cube.
- Do the draft using 90 cards taken randomly from that set of cards, using any of the usual 1v1 drafting methods, like solomon, winston or winchester.
The idea of "taking a color away" is to give some variety to the drafting, giving you the possibility to modify the posible decks in a pinch (Dont want lots of aggro? Take red away, dont want a lot control? Take blue away) and also I believe having less colors will make the resulting decks a little better, but I might be wrong in this one.
Format 2 (long method):
- Do the draft using 120 cards taken randomly from the cube, using any 1v1 draft method you like.
- Build 2 decks with the cards you drafted, you must choose which of your unused cards go to each decks sideboard.
- Play as you like, here are some ideas:
4 matches, playing each of your decks against each other, in case of a tie play a match with the deck of your choice (or your opponents choice, or build the best deck you can with all your cards)
2 matches, playing each deck once, tiebreak as above
Well, now that I shared my idea with you, here are some questions for the cube pros:
- Is the cube composition okay? Which kind of lands do you think I should include?
- Do you think the "take a color away" is a good idea? I think it would be fun, but might be super hard to balance and maybe it doesnt improve the game that much.
- I have no clue of which cards I should include or how to make a cube. Will the usual resources for cubes be usefull with this project?
Well, I ended making a cube that is a little bigger than what I posted, the composition is this:
42 cards per color
20 gold/hybrid cards (My collection is made of mostly old cards, so I have very few hybrids)
5 tri colored cards
20 lands
15 artifacts (I wanted to include 20, but only had 15 that drawn my attention)
The cube right now has 270 cards, which lets me play 6 man drafts and gives me some variety when playing 2 and 4 man drafts.
The only thing that really bugs me about this cube is that I dont have a land for each color combination (im mising 2 or 3), so there might be a little disadvantage for some color combinations.
