So maybe we don't all have a set of P9 for our powered cubes or we don't feel like dropping $50 for Karn when we know we plan on puttnig a $100 foil in eventually. That's all fine and good, but how do you handle that in your cube, being that it will be incomplete or colors will be misrepresented? Do you proxy the cards you are missing or do you just leave them out?
I'd either proxy up the missing cards until you can obtain them, or if you're opposed to running proxies, use a solid affordable placeholder until you can pick up the card/version you want the most.
I used to just use the non-foil versions until I was able to pick up a foil one, because I traded a TON and the cards I wanted to include are typically either cheap or tournament staples, so having the non-foil version wasn't a burden. Now that my Cube is in a rotating phase of 'finished' foil-wise and I don't get to be in LGSs as much (and therefore trade as much), I only put foils in the Cube now and just keep a list of what I need in my binder.
I don't ever use proxies, but I'm in a position that my Cube is close to 100% functional without them (I'm still missing foil Kiora as my oldest exclusion, and my Cube doesn't have a glaring weakness that you may get from missing stuff like dual lands etc.).
Every card in my cube over $1 is proxied (and they look exactly like a real card until you put your face 12 inches from it). I often, without worry, go out for a cigarette and leave my cube alone in a room of 20 people I have never met before.
