Can anybody else comment on whether the KMC Hyper mattes are slightly too short for double sleeving? I already have some Perfects on the way, I just need to finalize my decision about what to put over them.
They're not too short, but there's a much smaller gap at the top of the sleeve than there is with the non-hyper ones.
Has that at all been an issue with shuffling (of any kind) or cards (or I guess the Perfect fits to be more accurate) getting dirty? The answer seems to be no but I'd like a more definitive statement (this goes to everybody posting in here)
All I can say is not yet. It may prove itself to be an issue in the future because the perfect fit is barely under the top of the hyper sleeve, but it hasn't been a problem up to this point.
So is general consensus for double sleeving to go with KMC Supers over top of KMC perfect fits? Over the past year we've acquired quite a few more expensive cards and I would personally feel much better about playing with them if I were doing it over two layers. I've had my KMC Mattes for just over three years now and even though I think they are still in ok shape, I'd like to just get new sleeves for the whole thing if I go through the trouble of double sleeving.

Consensus is KMChyper mattes/mattes or Dragon Shield with KMC perfect fits. The supers are nice, but tend to get more sticky than the matte line.

You should read up to the last 3 pages of the thread. It's been covered already. It's hypermats for me. Red is my personal choice, but I also think color could be a factor for longevity/durability. My advice is choosing those with darker tones.
Don't know about the box dimensions as I'm not done sleeving up the whole cube yet, but I just wanted to report back and say the Hyper Mattes are not in any way too short, nor did I have any trouble getting the cards into them. I really like the way they fit over the Perfect Size sleeves. Seems great to me.
Could someone with double sleeved cards please tell me the dimensions I'd need to make a single row box holding 550 of them? Only have my cube single sleeved atm.
Thanks for your help.
My 540 double sleeve comes just shy of 16", so I'd guess around 41 CM long.
Yeah, it's a tank. Kind of heavy with all the cards inside, but it's a lot more aesthetically pleasing than carrying them around in a bunch of old fatpacks.
And no, hadn't planned on getting it engraved. Maybe one day I'll get the Magic logo and mana symbols, but for now I'm liking the clean look.
I like the bevel around the edge of the lid. These details can make a big difference.
The fasteners look a little chunky, but probably necessary if you are transporting the cards about. I'd love a wooden box if I was mostly cubing at home, but it wouldn't be my first choice for travelling.

Thanks very much. Sorry for delay.
Sure. I'm using KMC Perfect fits and hyper mattes if that makes a difference.
I know a lot of you have nicer boxes for your cubes and -- hopefully this hasn't been asked dozens of times already -- I'm wondering who you guys have ordered from?
I'm looking for recommendations w/rough price ranges; I'm also curious if there are any places you'd suggest I avoid.
Also, have most of you gotten your cases completely custom, or just spec'd for a particular cube size / overall dimensions? I'm thinking about permanent / semi-permanent internal dividers, clasps & hinges, etc.
I've been bouncing between holiday boxes for too long now and I want a real case (interestingly for me they tend to have a lifespan curiously close to 1 year...).
For reference if it matters my cube's 420 with 6 30-card expansions, lands and tokens; all said ~800 double-sleeved cards.
I built mine myself, cost around 50$ in materials...I haven't got around to adding the closures I purchased but since it doesn't travel much it hasn't been an issue.
I can get you the dimensions if you want; holds 540 cube, 40 each basic, 30 6-sided dice, ~50 sleeved tokens and 20-30 extra sleeves. Cards, lands and dice fit in the bottom tier and extras fit on top with room to spare. The extras are currently in a plastic deck ultra pro deck box to keep from sliding around.

I'd much rather get alters and stuff to cover my borders, but that's just me.
Not just you. The majority of the cards I alter lately have been the "unfoilables" or just old bordered cards that people want to unify with the rest of their decks. Yesterday I spent the afternoon doing a Miracles deck's UNL cards and I have more restoration and black bordered stuff lined up for the near future. I have about 100 of my own cards I did it to because it just looks so much better and the white thing drives me nuts.
Yes, from MTG Custom Deck Boxes on Facebook. He does really good work.
That's an amazing box. Out of curiosity, would you be willing to share how much (or perhaps a price range) it costs to get something like that made?
It was around $200. The 2nd row added some complexity he said, so a typical single row box would be a bit less I believe.
I'm really happy with it, though. I took all the measurements my cube required and designed the box myself, and once I received the finished product I remember I went back and told him that it's like he downloaded the plans from my brain, that's how perfect it was.

That's awesome! Thanks for sharing. Do you think that he could produce something of similar quality for someone who isn't as mentally oriented to designing something like that (I'm talking about myself here haha). I don't know the measurements I would need, but if I was to say something like '540 cards double-sleeved in KMC Hyper Mattes + KMC Perfect Sizes" would HE be able to get the proper measurements? Since he is claiming to be making boxes specifically for Magic cards, I kind of assumed that I could just mention how I've got my cards sleeved and how many cards it is, and he'll be able to produce the proper measurements? I dunno, though.

He does all kind of boxes for people, so I'm sure he'd be able to work with you. But still, I would at least measure how long your cube is on it's side to be sure you get what you need. Also make sure to include space for your basics and any tokens/dice you plan to use. It's really nice having everything to do with the cube contained in a single box, minus playmats, of course.
So I just got a new bag. I'm pretty impressed. It's exactly what I've been looking for in a Magic bag. This company apparently just started. They are called Pirate Lab. I just happened to randomly see an ad and instantly bought it. I didn't take a picture of the bag all closed up though. The main compartment has a large pocket, it has really nice cut outs in the foam, and the back compartment holds a playmat and trade binder. The sides of the bag are reinforced and it feels really durable. It's like they took an ultra pro bag, made it big enough to hold a binder, and then made it with high quality materials like a dragon's egg. Can't wait to test it out at FNM tomorrow.
I saw that on a Facebook ad. Interesting, but I don't know if I want to ditch my box just yet... Feels like I just got it. A shoulder strap is nice though.
Can you have just rows on the inside? Or is it in that setup?
