The other Mr. rantipole also gives zero f's about Magic and wouldn't buy me cards because he'd fear buying me the wrong ones. It's totally fine; I can settle for dinner out and good wine.
There was a time when I might've cut someone for a a foil Kokusho, so i think that's a great gift, Spike.
Foil kokusho is one of the very few cards in my cube that I actually opened in a pack. Back in 2004, someone offered me $60 for it, and I was like "are you kidding me? This thing is insane!".

Hey at least you get taken out to eat. I don't get Magic cards or dinner out. She does cook, though. I suppose that's a plus.

Definitely a plus. I do all the cooking that doesn't involve a microwave.
Mrs. Dr. Tom doesn't play Magic and doesn't care about it. She also doesn't care if I go play. While she's never bought me any Magic-related gifts, I'm sure she would if I asked for them. She does enjoy Cards Against Humanity, though.
We've acquired all of the publicly available CAH cards including the Bigger, Blacker Box. One of my gifts to my wife for Christmas this past year was the "10 Days of Kwanzaa or Whatever" that they did. Some of the stuff she got was pretty lame, but she did get three small card packs that included some funny stuff. It's the best game we have when we have friends over for drinking and gaming.

That's awesome. I'd love to be able to pick up all the promos. The Kwanzaa one did include a card with my wife's name on it. We ran with that idea and now we make everyone who plays with us put their name on a blank card.

Same (except we each got the "Kwanzaa or Whatever" and my wife gave most of hers to my brother). We used to have people over for a variety of games. Now it's pretty much just CAH. Everyone seems to be OK with that.
That's a pretty good description. Everything down to the rules booklet is awesome about this game. There's even a bit about where to send complaints and it lists an address for Dick Cheney. It's hilarious. There's also an 800 number that you can call that has a bunch of really funny menu options once you connect. Outside of Magic and cube, it's the most fun I've ever had gaming with my friends. It's even better when there's alcohol involved.
My birthday is next week, and Mrs. Bl00m has let it slip that she's going to fund a purchase of a KTK box as a present...
... I'll have to report on how my one goes!
Thankfully, my cube's already got the fetches, so if I get Sarkhan (and probably Clever Impersonator and Utter End), all of its dreams will be fulfilled!
Yes. Use cake flour/mix in addition to the usual pancake mix/flour. Alton Brown suggests going half-and-half. I think that's a little too cake-y. YMMV.
You should be able to find Alton Brown's pancake recipe via Google pretty easily.

This was more a case of "do you know someone American that has a cool homemade recipe?" than "let's #kiblergoogle". And this felt like the easiest way to achieve that goal, actually.
In any case, thanks for the suggestion, I'll let my wife know.
My wife made lemon ricotta pancakes once. They sound pretty sketchy but they were really good. I'm pretty sure she got the recipe online somewhere, though. KNowing her, it was probably from Pinterest.
What a SuperBowl, gutted for my Hawks, but you can't argue with either team winning that game. Bizarre playcalling with the pass-off at the end will get the focus unfortunately. NE would never have stopped Marshawn Lynch at half a yard out with three more attempts at it, lol. But I think Pats were marginally the better team over the season and it's amazing how they rebounded over the season from that stint where they were playing like garbage, to put on a really competitive final. Now we need some offensive linesmen and receivers in the off-season and back for another run.
I thought it was a great game. I'm a huge NE fan, so of course that helps. That call at the end was really something. From what I understand, Carroll has had a history of going for it through the air and not leaning on his backs in crunch time. Beast Mode would've punched it in and won that Super Bowl. I'm glad it didn't happen though; the Patriots don't need to lose a third consecutive Super Bowl off a miracle catch at the end of the game.
I'm interested to see what happens to the 'Hawks after they pay Russell Wilson what he's worth. This was their last season with a top-10 QB at bargain basement prices. When they have to pay him $18+M instead of $668K, we'll see how many of their back-to-back Bowl players they can actually keep. They've essentially been playing for 2.5 seasons with $17M in cap space more than every other competitive team in the league.

Didn't know you were a Pats fan. Yeah, that Kearse catch was a wtf moment. He has hands of stone at times (see vs GB where he spooned two nice passes into the air for picks) but he can make the unorthodox grabs. Hawks usually would punch it in with Lynch who barely ever gets stopped for no gain. I think the playcall in this case was just to burn some time and maybe catch NE out. But Butler made one hell of a play although even giving him that opportunity was a bad idea IMO. You don't abandon your run first game, not at that moment, not worth the risk and they paid for it.

This is true, RW is gonna be expensive. The way QB contracts are going, he could well be top-paid player in the league. He's not the best QB of course, though easily top 10 and arguably top 5, but that's the way it's going with their salaries. However, remember the Percy Harvin debacle? There is actually some cap space free from that since he was let go for zero,of course the decision was made last season to let Golden Tate go... what a bad decision. Also cost 'em a load of good picks. Unfortunately Harvin was very disruptive and cutting him was the correct choice.
Hawks just need a #1 target at receiver (amazing what RW has done with undrafted agents and rookies), and a couple of O-Linesmen who can pass block. Very clear weakspots. As for Pats, they are better rounded and look in good shape, maybe a new RB and a pass rusher. I have a ton of respect for the Pats, they are the only team who are consistently great year on year. That's how to run a football team!
Agreed completely. They need to draft a good deep threat receiver (both teams do, actually) and do what the 'Hawks do best ...which is scouting fantastic talent and having their players out-perform their contracts. The key for long-term success in this league seems to be finding a franchise QB, a good head coach, and the ability to let good players go in order to have the cap room for a deep bench of solid players. It's worked for the Pats for 15 years now, and if the 'Hawks can make those difficult roster cuts and balance their cap as well as the Pats have in the last decade+, they can stay at the top of the NFC.
The Pats need one WR that can cut the top off the defense (Randy Moss, I miss you) and get Jerod Mayo back and healthy for a full season. The Pats were without their Mic'd starting center linebacker for most of the year and they were still the best team in the league. I think they can be competitive again next year, as long as they can retain Gronk, Brady, Browner & Revis (without losing any of their role-playing defensive players like Jones and Nincovich). I know that Brady did a contract restructuring that lost a lot of guaranteed money in order to free up cap space. If Wilson does something similar and it allows the 'Hawks to keep Lynch, Wilson, Sherman, Chancellor and Thomas III, they'll still be a wrecking ball in the toughest division in professional sports.
Agree with all of that. The 49ers are on the slide for now, but they're still filled with talent, but the Rams and Cardinals are legitimately more and more dangerous... Especially the Rams always seem to trouble the 'Hawks with some special team trickery, lol. The next few years, it will tough to stay on top in that league and have a good record with all the nasty divisional games. Then again, my AFC team (Jacksonville) has an way easier strength of schedule and still goes 4-12 or so every year...
Pats will certainly be competitive again. It made me laugh when people were writing off Brady after three really bad games and were actually calling for him to be benched. I see them being competitive with this core for 3 more years at least. I reckon you could stand to lose Browner too, he is really too physical in this age of giving the benefit of the doubt to the WR rather than the corners. I love the guy's style but officiating is moving away from that contact unfortunately so he gives a lot of penalties away. You're right about a downfield threat, if either the Pats or Seahawks could land Megatron after his Lions contract it will be hilarious. Good luck for next season!

So, the box report.
Not the worst box I've ever opened. Only two fetches (Strand and Mire), but four mythics (Sarkhan, Roc, Surrak, Empty the Pits), along with DTT, Utter End, Rattleclaw Mystic... not much dross in it, even if it wasn't loaded with fetches. Winner!
