I was at an aquatic pet (fish, corals, shrimp, etc.) conference this weekend and I just kept thinking about how cool a cube conference would be. Someday when I'm rich, I'm going to do it.

That would be awesome. Scheduled cube events with different cubes over the course of the day. Cube building workshops. "Pimp my cube" artist tables. I can only imagine what the trade section of that conference would look like! There are a lot of cool ideas!
Exactly. Maybe we should Kickstarter it and see if WotC would sponsor. Because I need another project right now (I really don't).
The day has arrived--my 9-year-old son finally cubed with me! And he trounced me...
He's played tons of Euros for years, and has pestered me to teach him Magic for a while now. He's a pretty shy kid, but a group in his afterschool program has started bringing decks with them. I've taught him the game and let him bring some of my old, underpowered kitchen table decks to school--he's now offering "tune up" services for other kids decks, and dispensing deckbuilding advice to the counselors. I've created a monster...
Anyway, this weekend he asked if we could cube. I started him out with Sealed, and gave him no advice. I figured he'd be blown away by the power level of the cards and build a giant Timmy deck, so I (cruelly) built a UW control deck to expose him to the horrors of facing down the blue deck. Nope, he built a very fast BR deck with quite a good curve, and was very restrained. He stomped me three games in a row.
Next up, Winston with 105 cards! I built a UG ramp deck that used Brago's Favor to get a Bribery out on turn three every game. He had an Esper deck that was quite effective, and even once overcame facing down its own Sphinx of the Steel Wind on T3. I took the match, but seeing him work his way out of a seemingly hopeless situation and claw back into a game was awesome.
Now my problem is that my cubing group typically plays from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m., and he's not going to want to go to sleep...
Nah, it just seemed the most efficient way to insure I always have someone to cube with. Sure, it took a decade, but now I have a gamer who is not allowed to leave the house. Woo!
It's funny, I held off for a long, long time. He'd been playing games like Glory to Rome, Settlers of Catan, Galaxy Trucker, Innovation... but the gruesome nature of some of the art in Magic made me wait until last year. (I'm one of those parents who fears that Star Wars is too violent for young kids, so Carnophage seems a bit much...) However, he'd already absorbed more than I had expected by lurking around the table watching us play.
So, he basically knew how to play when he was 7, but I only formally taught him at 8.
Oh, and all of his favorite decks seem to be black/red, full of the darkest, bloodiest art in the game.
How old was your son when you first introduced him to Magic?
My oldest was 5 and he's still really into it 2 years later. My youngest is just starting to read and do math so we'll start with him soon. My favorite story was my oldest getting in trouble at school for misspelling "Wear" like "Were." The teacher kept driving how how these words were pronounced differently and that saying Were like WayR was wrong. He then provides examples: Werewolf + Werebear. I was equally impressed and ashamed.
Fun fact: Gavin Verhey was talking about newer cards on his stream tonight and Bloodsoaked Champion's playtest name was "Raidcrawler" (after Gravecrawler.)

Rest in RIP My Signature, I guess. 2015-2016, we hardly knew ye.
Total side note but I like how people are discussing running this over itself.
Well, it has to be said that Kolaghan is clearly better than Kolaghan. Considering what BR decks usually want and how stiff the competition in this guild is, there is no way that I would run Kolaghan over Kolaghan! Kolaghan might make it in as the sixth guild card or so. Kolaghan on the other hand ranks several places below that.
It was so funny to me when they described this as a downgrade to the original Zurgo during the Pax East panel. I was thinking if this is a downgrade, they should really "downgrade" all legendary creatures. Haha.
My deck designing is quite concise at this point:
1. Come up with deck idea
2. Realize this idea is somehow fundamentally similar to another deck I have or that is commonly played in my group
3. Decide I don't want to disassemble one of my existing decks
4. Give up and do nothing
I don't see the point of this new shroud mechanic. It's strictly worse than Hexproof. Threshold is pretty bad too, Delirium is a much better mechanic and probably easier to activate.
Otherwise this card is a pretty neat guy. Dodges removal and grows into a Primal Huntbeast. 3/5

I've been playing Magic since I was about 9 or so, and I've always been surprised with the amount of vocabulary you can pick up from this game. The earlier you play the better it sounds, as far as that goes.
Magic wasn't around when I was growing up. My vocabulary came from Dungeons and Dragons, Star Frontiers, and Gamma World. I remember being annoyed at having to explain what a will-o'-wisp was to someone in 7th or 8th grade.
Love that you guys are passing the game along to the next generation. I've tried to teach my snakes but they have trouble holding the cards.
So who's organizing our Secret Santa this year? Do we have a willing veteran organizer?
Ah yes I was logging onto the thread to ask just that.
I like the project and I could consider running it again this year, but it would have to be with Mod support to try to avoid what happened last year - unfortunately, not everybody sent a gift.
I still have my gift together for my person, but I deleted a bunch of messages and can't find who it was! I feel awful every time I see the cards put aside, and I always forget to ask. Hopefully they will message me (even though I probably have to change the cards I put aside, since they were autographed by me for what their Cube needed...)

Oh, I did not meant you, Antknee, you were not a part of 2013's Secret Santa (although I am sure the recipient of that gift will still enjoy it!). I'll discuss this year's Secret Santa with our Mod, mr. Luffy, and I will report soon.
I think I'm going to work up a list for 450 (well, 465) and print paper proxies for everything I'm missing so I can play with the list I really want and get to feel happy inside every time I remove a piece of paper and eat it.
edit: did colbycube ever do a primer for storm like he was talking about? It's a tempting include.

Lovely Cube people! This is just a friendly reminder that our annual Secret Santa is running, but the window to sign-up is closing - please sign up before Monday, December 8th, 12PM GMT!
Thanks for hosting. Hopefully it goes smoothly. If you happen to need additional mod support, I know I'm not a mod in this area, but I would be willing to pitch in to make things happen.

I truly appreciate your help, I really do. So far, our dear mr. Luffy has been awesome, helping me with all the setup and with all the issues that arose, so kudos to him. But it's great to know that if things go south (and I am doing my best to ensure they won't) there's extra help available if needed.

I checked the site after your suggestion and it seemed decent but I honestly don't mind running the process "by hand".
