Without giving anything away, I'll say that it's probably some of the best acting I've seen from both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Those two together is just phenomenal.
I'll spoiler this next bit, just in case...
I hope the show continues with a new cast and new case in the next season. I wanna think I've heard rumors that it's gonna be one of those types of shows and I feel like that would just be the best thing ever. I don't know who can outdo these two guys, but I'm already excited to find out.
wtwlf, absolutely I'll spoiler the talk and you definitely should watch it. In one season it's become one of my favorite shows ever.
No 1st season plot in first spoiler, just stuff I know about season 2.
Yes, next season is a new cast and a new case. No real word yet on what the details will be, but Pizzolatto will probably write every episode again.
First season plot in this spoiler:
I loved the show, but I have some quibbles. The most important issue is that it is never explained why two victims are put up on public display 17 years apart when all the other victims are carefully hidden. It doesn't make a lot of sense, especially considering that other aspects of the cult seem so carefully thought out.

You know, I didn't even really think about this, but you're absolutely right. That's definitely weird. To be honest, I think the quality acting combined with snappy dialog, a well written storyline, and the amazing direction in each episode (that one shot scene with Rust making his way through the neighborhood was so intense!) probably drew my attention away from several things that I might have nit picked. I kinda of really want to take a lazy Sunday and just marathon the entire season over again now that it's over.
As a recent side project, I started playing a funk/jam band because they wanted to add horns to their sound and the drummer is a pretty good jazz drummer as well with whom I have played (in addition to the sax player being a friend).
Well, we just did a gig this past weekend at the large venue in town (3k seats) opening for Michael Winslow (of Police Academy fame, the sound effects guy) and Atlanta Rhythm Section (a fairly popular Southern US rock band), and someone grabbed a couple good clips! Check them out:
True Detective - I agree this is probably the best show ever made (if we only compare first seasons).
My overall list is something like:
Breaking Bad
House of Cards
Sopranos
The Wire
Not finished yet, but will probably make my list:
Luther
The Fall
Game of Thrones
True Detective
Hannibal
Worth to mention:
Rome
Spartacus
Dexter
Homeland
Boss
Deadwood
My thoughts on True Detective:
The thing I liked most about the show was the slow pace, the interaction between the main characters and unfolding of the story in several time lines at once. I really like stories with lots of flashbacks, and changing time lines. So this show is perfect for me.
Further more the setting of the swamp lands and the filming of the scenery is truly stunning and a work of art.
I don't think the story itself needs more explanation, as it wouldn't seem as realistic if everything had a reason or was bended in neon. I like that everything aren't explained and there's plenty of open ends and unfinished story lines. (Basically just like any Korean crime movie).
I look so much forward to the second season already and will cry on monday when I realise that there's no new episode...
Yep, it's going to be some sort of anthology. HBO is hoping that they'll be able to lure a couple big name actors/actresses each year to participate in it. Having the same cast probably isn't feasible if only because the whole season took six months to shoot, and there's no way McConaughey is going to devote half of his life to a tv show. Too bad, because he's worth all of the acclaim he's been getting.
I think that's a damn-amazing idea. It also makes the series more like a collection of mini-series' which is easier to keep up with if you have a busy schedule. Anyone know when it's slated to come out on blu?
I'd love to see Ed Norton in something like this. They're really gonna have to get some heavy hitters to follow that opening act.
Ed Norton is an excellent idea. I'd love to see Tilda Swinton get a role in this too. Had he not tragically passed, Philip Seymour Hoffman would've been beyond awesome! Are future seasons going to be set in Louisiana? I know Pizzolatto is from there, so he probably has a million ideas about the place.

Very good points, Bonda, but I think if you don't explain why the killer cult does something so out of character twice (and 17 years apart) it needs some explanation. Without explanation, the deaths of those two girls are just plot devices and that smacks of lazy writing. It's especially aggravating because most of that show was so damn tight. It would've been every easy to slip that kind of detail into the dialogue or something. You really shouldn't present a mystery like that and then not solve it.
I would've liked more details of the cult, but that's just because it's fascinating not because I feel like the show is flawed without it. Also, some indication that the local police and the Tuttles were under serious investigation would've been nice, because I don't see how the Feds aren't coming down on them like a ton of bricks. I guess we're just supposed to infer it, which is mostly fine.
Even given these issues, it was one of the best things I've ever seen on TV. I rank it up with Freaks & Geeks, Battlestar Galactica, and Breaking Bad. The writing was so crisp and deep. The acting was superhumanly good. The camera work...everything. I'm already looking forward to watching it again.
Bonda's list reminds me that I never finished Deadwood, Rome, or (criminally) The Wire.
My girlfriend and I powered through the entire season of Freaks and Geeks in one Sunday. It was awesome. I'm working on Deadwood now. I'm almost done with season two, which has been considerably slower and less exciting than season one. I've not watched The Wire, Rome, or House of Cards. I just want to retire early so I'll have time to sit around and watch all the tv and movies that I've missed out on.
Heading to my first session of Vampire the Masquerade in the morning, pretty excited about that. In the (hopefully) near future, I'll also be playing in a Riddle of Steel and running a Cthulhutech campaign.
In other roleplaying news, I finally got a copy of World's Largest City.

Well, it has to be said that Kolaghan is clearly better than Kolaghan. Considering what BR decks usually want and how stiff the competition in this guild is, there is no way that I would run Kolaghan over Kolaghan! Kolaghan might make it in as the sixth guild card or so. Kolaghan on the other hand ranks several places below that.
It was so funny to me when they described this as a downgrade to the original Zurgo during the Pax East panel. I was thinking if this is a downgrade, they should really "downgrade" all legendary creatures. Haha.
My deck designing is quite concise at this point:
1. Come up with deck idea
2. Realize this idea is somehow fundamentally similar to another deck I have or that is commonly played in my group
3. Decide I don't want to disassemble one of my existing decks
4. Give up and do nothing
I don't see the point of this new shroud mechanic. It's strictly worse than Hexproof. Threshold is pretty bad too, Delirium is a much better mechanic and probably easier to activate.
Otherwise this card is a pretty neat guy. Dodges removal and grows into a Primal Huntbeast. 3/5
House of Cards looks good. I loved the 1990 BBC series starring Ian Richardson, and the two sequels were not bad either. The asides to the camera were a lot more surprising back then. There was also a certain grubbiness to it that contrasted nicely with the pinstripe suits and wood panelled walls.
"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less." -Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass
It was really fun. All we did was make characters and the first little bit of a session, but I enjoyed it. I'm playing a member of House and Clan Tremere, the other two who have built are Gangrel and Nosferatu. It's pretty funny because I'm 8th generation, so I'm a bit over 400 years old, and both of them are like 60 years old.
We're actually going to be doing a joint campaign of 3 different systems in one overarching "campaign" before eventually meeting up, and the other 2 are Cthulhutech and Riddle of Steel, which should be cool. I'm running cthulhutech.
Edit: Today was also a really good day because I picked up Brimaz for my cube, and a (gold bordered) Rishadan Port, and a few other fun cards. Next step: Find someone to alter this Port and cover the ugly gold on it.

Character creation and backstory generation was always my favorite part anyways.
Protip: The mark of a good V:TM GM is making sure that your group never runs into any warewolves. If you encounter a werewolf, nobody's gonna have a good time.
I got the Cthulhutech rulebook a few years ago, but we never played it. Our group mostly stuck to the new World of Darkness. Never played the old version, but I've heard about the problems of mixing werewolves and vampires. That wasn't a problem with the new system. In the campaign we played, every player started with a human character, then more and more of them became vampires, werewolves or even ghouls.
