Right. And I'm honestly not a competitive person at all. Of course I want to win, but if I lose and the game was a fun back and forth, then I'm still happy. One of my matches today involved my opponent playing a Massacre Wurm and then me drawing an Opposition with only a few life to spare. I was then able to keep his Wurm locked down long enough that I drew into two flyers and starting hitting him for four flying a turn. It came down to the wire, but ultimately he was able to find enough threats that I couldn't keep everything locked down. It was a fun back and forth and a very close game. I lost, but I still had fun. That's what I want all of Magic games to be.
I didn't mention that I only play in the Swiss events for just this reason. Still, though... that doesn't take away much from the sting that is getting beat three turns into the game and having to wait nearly an hour for the next match to start.
They are pretty much my thoughts exactly. Ridiculously busted cards feel fine in normal cubes, for the reason you said. I got beaten by someone casting a turn one Hero of Bladehold in my cube (off a Mox Diamond and Mana Crypt). We just laughed and shuffled up again. It can feel slightly more stink to lose to Channel + Ulamog (or whatever) in an online match if you are paying for the experience.
I had a buddy go:
Lotus, crack for green, cast Channel, play swamp and Mind Twist for hand.
Lotus, crack for green, cast Channel, play swamp and Mind Twist for hand.
He actually lost that game somehow.
I'm playing at my kitchen table the environment is different. I'm surrounded by friends and we're all here together to have a good time. Even if there's only four of us, if my opponent opens with a turn three fatty in two games and completely stomps me, we can just play again while the other match is still going on. We can discuss his deck and draft options. We can stop playing and watch the other match. When that sort of thing happens to me IRL, it usually just results in a sarcastic, "Really, dude?". Then we show off what just happened to the guys in the other match, then we all have a good laugh and shuffle back up. When this happened to me yesterday on MTGO, I then had to wait nearly an hour for the next match to start. I'm just here at my computer, drinking my coffee like, "Well, that sucked." It's a different experience for me.
I also would not be so annoyed and tilted by it if I could typically count on my next match not being a repeat of something similar. I play and lost to Turn-Three-Fatty.dek, then I'm paired against Storm Combo. Against Storm the games are usually back and forth with them playing card draw spells, walkers, artifacts for a few turns while I'm building up my board like a "normal" Magic deck. Then they "go off" and I wait for them to take a five-ten minute turn to see if they can win. I'd honestly rather lose on turn three than spend time playing a game like that. It's boring and not fun at all. That's not what Magic is about for me. Last night I had one guy Tendrils me for exactsies, then Remand the final Tendrils before it resolved just so he could do it again for the rub ins.
So I guess it comes down to it just being a different playing environment with my cube vs the MTGO Holiday cube and a hatred for Storm decks (both as a player and an opponent).
I brought mine for 500-600 baht, I think. It's from the same shopkeeper that ask if I want to trade a foil fetchland for a pack when I started playing though, can't say I feel too bad about it.
The Judge Land Tax is really beautiful but I am very happy to be playing the version with the creepy pimp on it. That is one of the most iconic images for a card in my opinion and worth running for the nostalgia if you are into that sort of thing. Dude is such a creeeeeeep!
If you wanted to add more fixing in a sense, would you go for 10 signets or 10 painlands?
10 painlands, and it's not close to being close.
EDIT
For further clarification, if your goal is only to improve the fixing, you definitely want the painlands. Untapped fixing is very important, particularly for aggro decks, and the pain lands are very good in that role. In my experience, the signets will be a boon for midrange/control decks (mostly blue-based ones, if I may add) and not really playable in the more aggressive decks.
I agree, though the signets' value rockets if you support the artifact/Wildfire decks, so all the UX ones might see play over the painlands if they are in competition with each over. There are other lands that suit some colour pairs a bit better too, if you aren't set on the whole painland cycle. But painlands will always see play and are never a bad choice!
I do support the artifact/ wildfire decks, so there's that.
Adding the Painlands just adds more fixing that is available for all decks without affecting the aggro/midrange/control balance much. Adding signets does affect that balance, because it allows midrange/control decks to power out their roadblocks/wraths earlier, leaving them less vulnerable against aggro decks. I think adding Painlands is something you can do without changing anything else if you feel you don't have enough fixing. Adding the signets may require some additional fine-tuning (like adding more aggro cards that kill artifacts, for example).

Yeah, It would definitely warrant testing.
I'm probably upping my cube to 540 + 15, so I have quite a lot of room for cards. I'll probably end up adding in the 10 painlands for sure, but won't make the final jump until Fate comes out and I get some playtesting with cards from there.
Can I just say that going up to power was the most fun and amazing decision I could have ever made for my cube.
Yesterday I threw together a pretty ungodly oath/tinker deck and cracked the following game 1 opening hand (the sphinx was the tinker target). Sorry in advance for the subpar photos, and for the turn 1 sphinx ;D
OK, thinking about actually showing my On-Deck binder in video form. Hoping to do it tomorrow before recording the new episode of The Third Power.
What kind of commentary (if any) would be interesting? Why the cards are in there instead of Cube, where the cards came from (if there is a story)...anything else? Or would you rather it just be a slideshow/silent video?

I'd be curious to know why the cards in your binder got benched, what they did when they were in your cube, as well as what it might take for you to bring them back. Stories about pimp acquisition are always interesting too. As a fan of your podcast, I'd check out that video.

Why not just do a video episode of The Third Power? You and Usman could go through your binder and discuss the cards. That'd be super interesting.
