Total side note but I like how people are discussing running this over itself.
Well, it has to be said that Kolaghan is clearly better than Kolaghan. Considering what BR decks usually want and how stiff the competition in this guild is, there is no way that I would run Kolaghan over Kolaghan! Kolaghan might make it in as the sixth guild card or so. Kolaghan on the other hand ranks several places below that.
It was so funny to me when they described this as a downgrade to the original Zurgo during the Pax East panel. I was thinking if this is a downgrade, they should really "downgrade" all legendary creatures. Haha.
My deck designing is quite concise at this point:
1. Come up with deck idea
2. Realize this idea is somehow fundamentally similar to another deck I have or that is commonly played in my group
3. Decide I don't want to disassemble one of my existing decks
4. Give up and do nothing
I don't see the point of this new shroud mechanic. It's strictly worse than Hexproof. Threshold is pretty bad too, Delirium is a much better mechanic and probably easier to activate.
Otherwise this card is a pretty neat guy. Dodges removal and grows into a Primal Huntbeast. 3/5
We have a high number of control / midrange players in my playgroup, and I'd love to draft a really wicked RB or WB aggro deck to show them how powerful it can be. However, I'm historically a diehard control player, with a lack of experience drafting and piloting aggro decks. I have a few questions about aggro:
How many one-drops is too many in an aggro deck?
Is 15/16 land a good rule of thumb?
I tried my hand at a RB aggro deck from my cube. Can someone take a look at this draft and let me know if I've built it right? Too many one-drops? Should I be playing the extra 3/4 drops? What about Dreadbore?
1. 6-8 is ideal. I think 7 is perfect.
2. For 15, the curve would need to be really low (like 0-1 4-drops). 16 is usually fine. 17 is okay too if one is a Strip Mine or if you have a lone 5cc curve topper.
3. You could probably get away with 1 less 1-drop if it's causing you to exclude a powerful spell you need. I'd play Grim Lavamancer for sure. Play Dreadbore over Mortars since Mortars can't go to the face or kill 'walkers either; in this deck Dreadbore is just better at doing the same job. Hero of Oxid Ridge is the nuts here. I'd play it over the X spell, as I think the evasion alone will represent more damage in the average scenario. Don't be too afraid of the ETBT clause on the Reaches. It hurts more in aggro than elsewhere, but it gives you open-board reach and a wrath-proof threat. Plus, it still fixes mana which is important for the Koth/Braids/Vortex mana demand you have. The rest of the deck looks good to me.
Well I just officially cut the most ridiculous fast mana from my unpowered cube: Mana Vault and Mana Crypt. Keeping Grim Monolith. I also cut Mana Drain and Library of Alexandria at the same time. Seeing how things go for a while; the cards will be sitting in my binder.
After playing fast mana and powered for a long time I also did this, there are less splashy plays but over all I think it rewards skill more.
While we're on the topic of *****ing about foil prices, I wanted to pick up a foil set of the draft affecting constructs from Conspiracy and saw that a foil Lore Seeker is at TCG mid $50! Considering that the non-foil version of him is only about a quarter, that makes the foil premium on this guy around 200x! This must be solely from Cube guys because who else is going to want a foil Lore Seeker?
Glad to hear this, when conspiracy came out I pre-ordered some foils including a foil Lore Seeker for $2.50 by mistake, was suppose to be a foil Deal Broker. Guess that was a good error by me.
Whoa. I got mine for 300. You never know about these P3k cards. They might just reprint them in some commander set or FTV. I have my burning of xinye and rolling earthquake sitting in my trade binder being un-moveable thanks to FTV:Annihilation.
I'd like to hope it would get a reprint. I was very thankful for the recent FTV it wasn't price gouged at all and it gave me plenty of fantastic cards for my cube. I also managed to get a playset of Force of Will today on the cheap they all look so beat up though so I think i'll let the cube keep the world championship gold bordered version.
Whoa! The prices for an English Ravages of War surely exploded over the last few years. I got mine three years ago for 110 €. (That was the most money I ever spent on a single card in my life.) Now it costs around 300 €.
And yes, Wizards could reprint them at any time, which would result in a drastic price decrease for the P3K versions. I got my Rolling Earthquake and my Burning of Xinye three years ago, too. Shortly before the contents of the new FTV box were announced, they had almost doubled in price. Currently, they are slightly below the price that I payed for them when I got them. I have replaced those two cards with the FTV versions (black borders, yay!) and will probably try to sell my P3K copies in two or three years, when the price has hopefully gone up a bit again.
Bottom line: Buying a Ravages of War now is not only insanely expensive, but also risky, since a reprint will not only introduce a much cheaper alternative, but will also drastically decrease the resale value of your own P3K version.
Yeah it's kind of a bummer for all of us who own the P3K cards. On the other hand, I am happy that people can get their hands on these cards to put inside their cubes.
Oh, I would definitely like it if Wizards would reprint more P3K cards. It is just fair for all those players who can't afford those insane prices. (Plus, it would introduce versions of those cards with black borders, with updated wording and without those stupid p/t symbols.) It is just a risk for those who are currently owning P3K cards or thinking about buying some.
The main reason that I am not running Imperial Seal in my cube is the insane price. A reprint would be highly appreciated.
reading the thread and noticing the looter price increase (got a signed one last year) I decided to finish foiling out my pauper cube. 294 cards and $360 I am done minus man o war and crypt rats which I'm bidding for on ebay.

This 100%, I have 2 proxies in my cube, Imperial Seal and Ravages of War, not a chance I spend $500 or $800 for them when they can be reprinted at any time. I will just hold out until the reprint comes.

Imperial Seal isn't $800 anymore, its broken $1000 now.

I think part of the reason for the Ravages price increase IS the printing of Burning and Rolling in a FTV set. The fact that Ravages was skipped over means it isn't seeing print in a non-judge capacity in a LONG time, especially considering this was the perfect set for a reprint.
I don't think any sort of restriction on power level should make a cube exclude Ravages or Imperial Seal. They're both stone cold staples that don't fall near the "powered" category.
To chime in on the Ravages of War conversation, I play two copies of Armageddon in my Cube because screw it. I'm expecting a promo Ravages of War eventually anyway.
Hi everyone this is my first foray into the Cube section... so I hope this is an appropriate place to ask this. I'd like to start getting into Cube, and I thought a neat way to do it would be with a Pauper or Peasant Unified Ravnica Cube (probably Peasant since you'd actually get to experience more of the multi-color aspect of the sets). I figure there are already some of these floating around that I could start with, but the Cube list section doesn't seem to be sorted in a way to easily find one, so I guess if anyone knows of someone's list on here or elsewhere I would appreciate it and any other advice!
Warning: remedial questions incoming. Take it easy on me.
I've been reading through the 2014 Cube Power Rankings, and realize that I'm undervaluing some of the cards. There are some cards in the Cube that I see people refer to as P1P1 pickable, but I have a hard time evaluating whether they're just "good stuff" cards, or "build-around" cards. I'm going to throw a few out here, and I'm hoping for some feedback on these cards. Specifically, are they just "goodstuff" that you throw into whatever deck you wind up building, or after P1P1 picking these cards, are you then looking to build a very specific deck around them. (like with Wildfire)
The cards I have questions about. (sorry if some of these are obvious) Dark Confidant Does P1P1 picking Bob always force you into Bx Aggro?
Balance I get why Balance is a top card, but I have trouble figuring out what kind of deck it fits in. Is this midrange/control Goodstuff, or are you looking for something specific after P1P1 Balance?
Elspeth, Knight-Errant The card that inspired my question. I was surprised to see Elspeth as #2 in the White section, and it made me want to take a closer look. Is she just Goodstuff in any white deck, or are you looking to build a particular deck type when you P1P1 her?
Gideon Jura I was also surprised to see this as White's #5 card. I really undervalue him. Does he go in any W/x midrange / control as Goodstuff?
Armageddon I use this mostly in W/x Aggro, but do people also run this as Goodstuff in any white deck? (like Conrol -- T3 Wrath, T4 finisher, T5 Armageddon?)
Upheaval I've read the SCD on Upheaval. I get that you draft as many mana rocks as you can get your hands on. Is this useful at all if you don't see it early?
Braids, Cabal Minion I recently added a Pox package, so I know she can lead you there. I know she also goes well as a T4 drop in B/x aggro. Outside of those decks, is she run in Black Goodstuff, or is she only situationally good?
Liliana of the Veil Same question on Liliana. If I P1P1 pick her, I can look for ways to abuse the discard (Squee, Crucible of Worlds, start of a Reanimator deck, etc.) I may have just answered my own question...
I also cut Mana Drain and Library of Alexandria at the same time. Seeing how things go for a while; the cards will be sitting in my binder.
