Very nice! That Mountain and Island are my favorite lands from that whole set.
Strongly agree - I wish they'd hire Veronique Meignaud more often because she does some great art! (That Forest is hers also, and I also have that lovely textless Lightning Bolt, and if I didn't prefer original art fetches I'd definitely use her expedition versions of the Onslaught fetches)
They did bring her back for Arcanist's Owl and Rogue Class so there's definitely hope that she does more soon.
Just got my Dan Frazier foil signets Secret Lair. Super disappointing. The etched foil art is so dark and washed out compared to the previews. Like holding a regular foil at an angle where it just isn't catching any light, except it looks like that from every angle. If it had been border only in etched foil, or even better just regular foil, it would have been very preferable
Anyway, a PSA to not go out your way to get these (or get them in non-foil) if you were on the fence.
I'm currently running largely original printings, but interested in replacing some with their (new) retro counterparts. I've heard there's quite a bit of variation in the foiling for these, with some having the art, textbox, name, etc foiled. Have any of you managed to get your hands on cards with only the borders foiled like they were pre-eighth edition?
That aside, which cards do you feel look much better in the old border than the new?
I tend always to prefer old border. But I'll admit, my Plague Engineer looks a little odd on account of being etched foil. Whatever they did with those just doesn't look right. The etched foil is half the price of the non-etched old-border one, so I guess I'd make the same choice again.
I also don't like that they left reminder text off of the Modern Horizons II old border cards. I prefer my Ignoble Hierarch in its new border so nobody has to ask what exalted means.
It's a wee bit annoying that they didn't put the Terese Nielsen art on Dismember though. Its not actually all that good compared to most Terese Nielsen art, but it still feels odd that they used different art from what the original card had.
I was so inconsolably nerd-raged when they replaced they original border that I refused to collect any of the newer cards for years (I was about 12). Just because I was a kid doesn't mean I didn't understand tasteful aesthetics. But I do understand that they wanted to expand the text box to avoid Ice Cauldron type cards that some visually impared people can't even read.

This is true. For MH2 anyway. If it came from SBB (set booster box), it will have the border only foiling, which IMO, is cleaner and more akin to the old pre-8th edition foils. If it came from CBB (collector booster box), the foil sheen will be on the whole card, which for me, looks a little sloppy.
Got my foil extended Leovold alter back today! Commissioned to Shivan Alter, I asked her a redo of a classical painting of Napoleon. As a frenchie it will probably be the signature card of my Vintage powered cube!

On spoiled card wishlisting and 'should-have-had'-isms:

But I was lucky enough to open an old-border Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, and it pleases me no end. I far prefer it to new border, partly just because of being a major character from the old days. Currently worth the same in either border. Honestly, I really love the Time Spiral Remastered ones. They were excellent card choices, and they look great. I almost played Mystic Sanctuary just because I have it in old border. Love my Mulldrifter, Solemn Simulacrum, Gray Merchant of Asphodel, Thoughtseize, Dreadhorde Arcanist, Thraben Inspector, Everflowing Chalice etc. etc..
