To avoid confusion, I wouldn't want to run creature tokens that say they have abilities that they're not supposed to have, so I'd avoid a lot of those. There are some pretty funny choices for old school purely vanilla dudes for most of these anyway, so if I were using real cards I'd stick with cards that have nothing but ridiculous flavor test inside wherever possible, like these:
You can even get the beta versions of some of these for less than a buck if you really want that old school flavor.

I do that with Alpha Mons' Goblin Raiders for Rabblemaster/Siege-Gang and Scathe Zombies for Grave Titan/Wakedancer in pauper cube. Good call on Trained Armadon and the others, I hadn't thought of that, good call.
I usually try to use a Magic token for every token creature, but I have been using some Magic cards as tokens as well. I previously used foil Rumbling Baloths as the Beast tokens for Rampaging Baloths, and I am currently using foil Walking Corpses as Zombie tokens and a foil Pharika's Chosen as the token for Ophiomancer. I wouldn't use creatures with "wrong" creature types and/or with extraneous abilities, but there are LOTS of Magic cards that can double as tokens - that's a cool way to customize your tokens! Just be careful not to use them in tournament Magic, though.
Using a foil Pharika's Chosen seems like a genius idea that I can't believe I hadn't thought of already. I need to get on acquiring that. I'm also currently using one of the BG hybrid tokens.
I like the smith art better for Nekrataal. It's a lot bigger and easier to make out what is going on, plus I like the vibrant colors and his expressive face.
Original Smith based on art / nostalgia alone, Nekrataal was in the first deck I ever played. However, I use the Jace vs Vraska version because it has the cleanest card text, I can't stand the reminder text / card frame / white border of the 9th edition version.
If I could have an old border foil of the original art, that would be my preference. Since that doesn't exist, I prefer the newer Moeller art. I just don't like how the old art looks against the new frame.

Isn't the 8th/9th-Edition available in old-bordered foil? Even with black borders?

However, if Humans matter at all in your cube, the only version that has the correct Oracle text and the original art is the 9th Edition version:
Fortunately, the foil of this is still black bordered. It's the edition I have in my cube.
