Old art suggests "alright, I know my Magic. Yes, I'm paying life, but I'm getting cards and that's a good tradeoff. I'm in control of this risk." New art suggests "ERMAGEHRD I hope I won't die from this!!11!1".
Plus old art is so iconic, and it's an invitational card.
Specialities about the cube: U tempo, B aggro, R slow-ish are supported. G aggro is not.
Currently trying to support tokens in all colors but blue, in different ways: W pumps them, B sacrifices them, R suicides them, G has decent-sized ones.

Old art all the way. Though poor people like will likely end up with the new art. (BTW, I love the ugly guy in the back - always assumed that Bob was whispering all his misdirection into him and his choices were making him uglier.)
I mean, hell, we're all on a forum for something that most people would describe as a "children's card game"...do what makes you happy. You are never too old to enjoy yourself.
I'm all in on the original Bob art. In addition to finding it more æsthetically appealing, I also have a policy to never rob an invitationalist of their rightful place gracing the art of their card.
Oh, and that i get to enjoy the old art in glorious old border on the promo is just gravy.
Just got to say, you've definitely earned distinction as an MTGS hero

Because he's the hero MTGS deserves, and the one it needs right now. So we'll global him. Because he can take it. Because he's not just our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. An expired rascal.

I'll probably stick with my foil 8th one for now, the new art is too similar and also has a stronger CG flavor that I'm not a fan of. At some point I think I'll get the Arabian Nights version for some of the tasty old-school flavor.
This is great news! I am currently trying to reduce the number of white bordered cards in my cube and City of Brass is one of those. The Arabian Nights version is way too pricey though. And its text box looks clunky, too. So I was looking for an 8th Edition foil as the best alternative, but that wasn't cheap either. Since City is Modern legal, I decided to wait and see if it shows up in Modern Masters... and jackpot! Not only will this allow me to get a black bordered City for (relatively) cheap, but I also really like the new artwork. The depiction of the city is pretty similar, but where the old art looked a bit too cartoony and flat, the new one looks gorgeous.

I actually like the painterly style of older cards, particularly Mark Tedin. For one thing, they are easier to alter. For that reason I like the Arabian Nights artwork. I would go with either an original Arabian Nights or a JSS foil one.
My Arabian Nights City of Brass is...well..Moderately Played. I decided to give it a bit of a rest and altered a Chronicles one to cube with. Much cheaper, and still looks cool.
To clarify: I meant the 8th Edition art when I was saying that the old art looked cartoony and flat. Should have made that clearer.
Arabian Nights and JSS Cities are above the price level that I am willing to pay for a simple aesthetic upgrade. I rather wait three more weeks and then get a black bordered City (with correct rules text, modern frame and non-foil, yay!) for only a few Euros. I also really like the new art from the MM version.
I'll probably try to scoop up a foil MM one to replace the Chronicles version I'm using now. Arabian Nights is a little out of my price range for now, and I also think that the foiling on that MM art is going to look amazing.

I dig the older styles as well. My AN City of Brass has a bit of moderate play, but I kind of like a little wabi sabi in my older cards, so it isn't a big issue to me.
Since we're on this topic anyhow, now that a while have pass, what are people thought on MM Goyf vs FS Goyf?
I like FS, because of the Future Frame and the reminder text.
My future shifted tarmogoyf is one the most beautiful foils I own, the dark art goes really well with the green future shifted frame. The MM goyf looks ugly.

I liked the Future Sight frames when we were in the context of Time Spiral block and thought they were a great way to show that these were a glimpse into the future. In Cube though, I hate the fact that they ruin the consistency of how everything looks. I prefer the MM Goyf a lot more if only for the fact that I dislike the Future Sight frames in Cube.
Though if they had printed basic lands in the Future Sight frame for that set, those would probably be the lands that I'd use for my Cube. The Time Spiral block got me back into MTG after a long hiatus.
I love having the cube be a mismatched pile of different frames. It shows all of Magic's evolution in the same format, which is awesome. Classic old frame cards, old frame foils, new frame foils, full art promos, future frame cards, alter extensions, custom art alters, full art lands and Un- frame basics ...it looks awesome to crack a pack/play a deck that's comprised of all the different Magic aesthetics.

Agree with all of this except the basic lands where I like consistency.
