Yeah, that card is very cool, but not near good enough for cube. Even though it's very difficult to deal with, it just doesn't do enough with a real form of evasion.

On the flipside, it seems like giving it good evasion gives it too favorable a comparison compared to something like Ætherling. I mean, it's already more sticky than that card. But evasion is a big part of what makes that card good...
Aethering also dodges wraths though, which this cannot. It's really, really hard to pin down an Aetherling.

I think I like it.
This seems weird. Without any way to increase your +1/+1 counters, this isn't going to accomplish much since you remove one counter (killing it) to make another 1/1?

There's a reason it's a 1/1 base P/T with Modular 1
So it's a 2/2 for 1. You pay 1 to remove it and you have 2 1/1's with modular 1. If one dies, you bump the counter onto the other to make it a 2/2 again (with modular!). The obvious decision when blocking is to block the progenitor, not the token, so that it can't keep pumping out tokens and reviving itself.

What if it had a can't attack alone clause so it has to split in two to attack and you have to pay 1 on turn 2 to attack in that manner
That doesn't work if it's an attack trigger.
What if we were to do this:
Swarm of Clickopedes 2
Artifact Creature - Insect
Modular 1
Whenever Swarm of Clickopedes attacks, you may pay 1. If you do put a token copy of it onto the battlefield tapped and attacking.

Wondering what size cube that fits in. It's a Mother of Runes troll, but without the body or regeneration of the 2 cube-worthy trolls. At 2 mana, albeit hybrid mana, and a pay-to-activate ability, it's less attractive than the 1CMC, free Mother. I'm afraid there's just a lot better options in UG than this at most sizes.

From one of his posts a while back. I posted a similar card in here and someone shared the MaRo tweet about no "strictly better basics" in land designs.
I think it probably needs a higher cost than that. Vitu-Ghazi, the City Tree is the baseline for a colorless-tapping land that makes a 1/1 token with no drawback (Moorland Haunt can do it with an additional cost of exiling a creature from your yard, and Kjeldoran Outpost requires you to sac a land to play it). I think Vitu is a little on the weak side for modern design, but I'd still be uncomfortable with a 3-mana 1/1 generator with added juice in a single color. I think it should either be 2RR or maybe 1RR with some kind of drawback (like it dealing 2 damage to you).

Well Vitu-Ghazi at uncommon seems to suggest that this could be feasible at rare. I think this is strong enough for cube, but not too strong to be printed. It would also finish out the cycle of colorless cubeable lands with colored activated abilities...Volrath's Stronghold, Kor Haven, Academy Ruins, etc. Come on Wizards, don't let us down!
