The most I've ever gotten from someone drafting my cube was "wow, these are all shiny" *proceeds to drop salsa on some $X00.00 card* haha
Honestly, as someone who grew up in utter amazement of the value of certain cards, I'm proud of my pimped cards and don't care what anyone else thinks. I enjoy them.
You know what I love about pimping my cube? The process. I love my spreadsheet with my pimping data in it. I have entries for all my current and preferred versions of the cards, prices and which site has the lowest prices. I love getting my shipments in the mail once a month or so and the feeling I get when I go through the cube to replace the old versions with the new pimp versions and updating my spreadsheet. I love spending an entire evening going through my spreadsheet and looking up cards to get current prices or finding pimp versions I didn't know existed. And I do it all for me, not for my friends that I cube with. Most of my cubing is done with my cousin who was always one of those guys that didn't care which basics he used, he just pulled the first ones he saw. White borders didn't matter. Arts didn't matter. It's just land. Pimp factor matters exactly zero to him and 75% of my cube drafts are two man drafts with this guy, so pimping my cube is not about trying to impress people. It's about being nerdy with a spreadsheet.

I hear you. Believe me man, I've been to the "I built it because I like it" party. Then someone stole a beta underground sea. And I lost six friends in the several arguments that errupted over it, never mind the thousands of dollars the card was worth. Then I hid everything away and built a cheaper yet still powered cube. CE saved my ability to cube, but the hyper expensive cards, the foil fetches and the other 9 beta duals, those things are kept someplace where even friends dont get to see them. I think we can all bring some perspective to this discussion, and I'm not trying to attack any of you, but sometimes It's better to have your beta pimp stuff in a binder in a closet that no one ever goes into, and cube the cheap stuff. I love this thread, and I appreciate those of you who show off your amazing alters and hyper expensive cards, but I feel like if someone says that they don't think it is worth it we all gotta just let a guy say his peace.
Saying that you want to protect your valuable collection is one thing, but saying that playing with amazing versions of all the cards adds nothing to the experience is something else entirely.

But that is subjective, isn't it? You cannot assume that it means the same thing to anyone else that it does to you. You can't do that. Just because you enjoy something doesnt mean everyone is going to enjoy it. Beta Demonic tutor and revised demonic tutor do the exact same thing. Just because one is more impressive and valuable than the other doesnt mean everyone is going to enjoy the impressive and valuable one more.
Of course it's subjective. I'm not arguing that he needs to feel one way or the other. Only that the overwhelming experience of opinions I've had are the opposite, so it absolutely does enrich the experience for the vast majority of players.
It's cooler to drive to work in a Ferrari than a Prius; they both ultimately take you to the same place but the experience is quite different.
Oh yeah I love using some of my hyper-pimp cards. I fully understand the joy of playing with that stuff. It was my mission to fully pimp my cube. At its peak, my cube was about 93% pimped. But eventually the cost and risk started overshadowing the enjoyment I got out of pimping (I'm trying to save for a wedding, car and house here), and I stopped feeling the need to pimp stuff out. Since about a year ago, most of the new cards to my cube have been non-pimped. It's not a big deal to me anymore, and it never was a big deal to some of my regular players anyway. Two of my friends actually actively dislike foils, so what the heck right?
I love the pimp cards that people post here, so keep it coming! I'd like people to post their favourite card/s in their cube too, not just new stuff.

I think this is actually an apt comparison, because for a lot of people the stress, expense, and inconvenience of driving a ferrari to work would massively outweigh any enjoyment, especially in the long run and especially to people who don't care about pimping their car(I am someone who would love to DD a ferrari, but actively dislikes most foils and the only "pimping" I am ever interested in is full/alternate art or alters if I think it's better/more fitting for the card.)
All that being said, this is a thread for people who DO like actively pimping/altering their cubes. It's not for people like me who don't care that much about it, and I also don't think it's really the place to discuss whether or not pimping is worth it or fun. It's a place for people who like to pimp their cubes to show off their latest great addition for other people who will appreciate it.
Sure, its subjective in the same sense that a man of average means prefers a sandwich over boiled tree bark even though they both provide some form of nutrition and satiety.
Thank you, I'm very excited to have it in my Cube I decided not to get my Beta one altered, figuring I can use it to recoup the cost of this one. Should have it in my hands tomorrow or day after and I'm definitely Cubing instead of playing Standard at FNM to try it out.
Woooow! That Klug Mind Twist alter is insanegreat insanely great!
What I find funny about Frostbringer is that its literal translation - disregarding the capitalization of the first letter and it being a compound word in German - looks and means exactly the same in English: Frostbringer = frost bringer. Oh, and it would obviously make a great name for a metal band.
