I never understood the appeal of Summer Magic. They don't look aesthetically better at all, they're just more rare and so more expensive. Price != Pimp IMO. I'd rather have a Collector's Edition square cornered version than a really expensive white bordered version.
@_i0: That Unearth is pretty sick. I had no idea that the foil version was that pricey. I guess that's a byproduct of being a good card that was only printed once and it just happened to be in the first set with foils. Still though, that's pretty nuts. It always boggles my mind to see commons, even foils, at that price.
@SpEkKiO99: Those lands are gorgeous. John Avon and Terese Nielsen are two of my faves. They have amazing artistic talent and a sweet looking signature to boot.

They actually do look more aesthetically appealing, they have the best coloration of any cards in magic. Imo, but that's ok I not buying it to please anyone else so you can trust they'll be in good hands.
Yeah, man. To each their own. I have a friend that's the same way with them, but I'm just over here like, "It's still white bordered." Another friend recently completed a set of power for vintage. He's been posting his finds and pick ups on Facebook, and I honestly feel kind of bad for not finding his set to be all the impressive because of the white borders. Those borders just make or break a card for me.

I understand where you are coming from. My goal whenever I finish pimping my cube out is to just have each card be unique. Whether that is foiled, altered, signed, or some rare promo version. I want my friends and I to open a pack and still get that wow factor. For example, I value the original Ravages Of War more than the new Judge Promo, just because of availability and honestly that star is disgusting. All foil cubes are obnoxious to me. They are very nice and I can appreciate them because I understand the amount of money and time that goes into other cubes but I think it lacks a sense of creativity. I am big into the finance community and find rarer cards to be more impressive. I have never been opposed to white borders as much as just the poor card quality of revised and 4th edition.
The coloration of Summer Magic is insane! It's like a beta card on a white border. Only a hand full of people in the entire community have even heard of these cards let alone own. I could also understand how having a 1 of 50 doesn't really appeal to many people but that's what I find to hold more collectable value, apart from it's actual value. (If that makes any sense). Another card that I think greatly portrays this image is Grim Tutor . Fantastic Card with fantastic art and the beautiful star symbol from starter 99, but many people don't like it because it is "white bordered". Which rarely sees play in cubes nowadays.(For a variety of reasons.
I also often find that many white border cards often out due their black bordered brethren. It is common knowledge that many people dislike the foiling of FTV. So P3k Burning of Xin'Ye and Rolling Earthquake to me are snap includes over their newer variations. This list could continue but I'm on vacation and should probably stop typing and go out to eat. haha
Finally, I believe that many people who are opposed to expensive cards often create a mental stigma; trying to disvalue white border cards without really having any knowledge about them. (Not saying this is you) I do agree with you when you said that more $$$ is not more pimp but to each his own. As someone who enjoys buying expensive cards because of their rarity, I just wanted to say my piece haha. Cheers.
Yeah, it's certainly 'to each their own'. I used to be 'mono-promo foil' but that has changed as I realize I want the cards to look as good to my eyes as possible. That means that I will likely upgrade cards to 'pimper' languages when possible without much trouble, and if I like foils better than regular versions, I'll do that too (I recently changed my Japanese Rolling Earthquake to the foil one, not only to eliminate a language barrier but to also save wear on the more expensive version), so I've realized that I have no rhyme or reason and that it's just on an individual card basis.
If I like the way the new Ravages looks, I'll try to trade for it, but at this point I need to acquire other cards before 'upgrading' my English P3K, ya know?

P.S. Appreciate but would never play expensive Summer cards. Had a Summer Demonic years ago and was scared to death to play it and damage it.
"It's still white-bordered" is like saying "That stamp is stupid, it's upside-down".
Not sure there's ever really an aesthetic/"pimping" reason to run Revised* or 4th Ed cards, but there's a lot of cool stuff among Portal (especially P3K) and Starter sets, and even some weird 5th-6th-7th set cards with unique art like the RKF Earthquake.
(* = ok, I'm still a sucker for the wrong-art Serendib Efreet)

An upside down stamp will still mail a letter and a white bordered Black Lotus will still make three mana, but the stamp would look nicer if you put it on the envelope correctly and the Lotus would look nicer if it had a black border. I would never completely exclude a card from my cube because it has a white border, the same way I wouldn't exclude a card for having only crappy art. In the case of Ankh of Mishra, even if I did get a black bordered Beta or CE version, it'd still have crappy art. It's still in my cube, though.
Not sure if you saw the link to the stamp I was referencing...
Anyway, the point is that rarity/backstory is a large part of the appeal of some cards (and not simply aesthetic considerations), and it's hard to think of any cooler backstory than that of Summer magic.
QFT. I have swapped out much, much more valuable versions of cards for cheaper ones deliberately to reduce the investment in my cube, and usually it just comes down to art preference. I'm fine playing with expensive cards, but not because they're expensive. I ditched my FNM Swords to Plowshares for the Terese Nielsen Conspiracy one. Both are really nice but I love Nielsen's art, and usually have the actual art being foiled looks great. I don't like FTV foiling much, but WWK Jace was so dark I swapped the much cheaper FTV one in for it anyway. And made lots of money!
That all said, there's nowt wrong playing with Summer if that's your bag, and you are looking after your cards properly!

Summer! Jesus!
Though I can't help but think that like 95% of people playing it will be like "Uh, why is this Revised crap in here".
Anyway, snagged this annoyingly spendy little Peasant card:

Me too, but I had to replace it with an FTV foil in the end because my players kept confusing it with a green card.
