What's the trick to get a scanner to show the foils like that? Everytime I've scanned foils, you can't even tell they're foils. Do you have leave the cover open and get some light in there?
Thanks man. I'm not sure what the trick is with scanning cards. It could be to with the scanner you use or the settings on the scanner. I don't have one myself but I have used the one at my work on cards and they have come out looking nice.
Probably not as pimp as most posts here, but decided I should share it since I don't think I have ever traded for so many cube foils in a single day before.

It's a cheap scanner and I've never messed with the settings on it. Sometimes the foiling shows up great; sometimes it is very subdued. Couldn't say why.

Cool Lion! It actually looks a lot like the one in my Cube...
If I could alter my own cards, oh the money I would save...
Fantastic job on the text. I've seen alters that were otherwise brilliant ruined by messy text.
Thanks man. I started altering cards with no painting experience only 3 months ago. The perfect time to start having a go at it is always now! It was Fredo, with his great work altering cards in his cube that inspired me to start.

Thanks man, yes it is very similar! I think I like yours better than mine though. It's got a more consistent style, whereas mine looks a little haphazard. If I find another Jungle Lion I'll give it another go.
Since the white or black border must now show for altered cards to be used in tournaments, how do people feel about basic lands being completely repainted to look like the duals or fetches or what have you? I think it's really only relevant for lands specifically- so you don't have to deal with mana symbols in the cost.... I almost feel guilty getting cards altered if it removes them from the card pool of duals and fetches to be used in tournaments. Does this diminish the experience of cubing down to using proxies, or is it acceptable in your eyes to have an island painted by some of the amazing artists in this thread to look like a wooded foothills for instance? Is it important for the name to have similar font to attain the regularity we've come to expect when reading the name of the card?

Do you have a link to where this policy was stated?
I understand that, but I'm curious because it sounds as if he believes the policy may have recently changed from the way he phrased it. Its not unheard of, as full art alters are now illegal to play with if the art is unrecognizable and the name and mana cost aren't there either.
I know SCG allows alters for their events, maybe not the grand prixs they do with wizards but the opens and invitationals they allow them as I've seen them on streams.

It's always up the head judge, but I do believe that most of them do want the white or black border for GP's and such. Star city Opens are a little more lax on their enforcement.
Pretty much what it comes down to is if you alter a card, you shouldn't expect to be able to play it in events. It could, but it's never a guarantee. Always ask the Head Judge before the tournament.

I've just heard from friends who are grinders that they've been enforcing
"3.3. Authorized Cards
Players may use any Authorized Game Cards from Magic: The Gathering expansions, core sets, special sets, supplements, and promotional printings. Authorized Game Cards are cards that, unaltered, meet the following conditions:
The card is genuine and published by Wizards of the Coast.
The card has a standard Magic back or is a double-faced card.
The card does not have squared corners. The card has black or white borders."
at starcity events.
It says specifically in that ruling that you just quoted that when unaltered, they have to meet those conditions. That simply means no silver or gold-bordered cards are tournament legal (holiday primos, Un- cards, championship cards, etc).

They only have to meet the above conditions in their unaltered form. The dual land that was altered had a white boarder when it was in its unaltered form.
That ruling is there to prevent people from altering CE cards and GB cards to have white/black borders and trying to play them in a tournament. All it states is that before the card has to be a genuine tournament legal card before it gets altered.
Every tournament ruling on which altered cards are legal comes from the head judge. What they're typically looking for is name, casting cost, card type, rules text, P/T and that the thickness of the card hasn't been altered to make it a "marked" card. Almost all other high quality alters that have the relevant game text available are ruled legal for tournament play.
Couple of recent upgrades from fnm/ftv versions into better versions.
Starting the slow upgrade process now that my cube is finally fully foiled out.
I remember looking at your cube pictures and wondering when you'd do this, it feels nice to get to the point where you're upgrading foils you already own.

Badass foils man. Grim Monolith foil is awesome in particular. I got mine just before the unbanning in Legacy, so I got mine for cheap. I wish I had a pack foil Elspeth though. The prospect of fully foiling my cube on my budget gets more and more unlikely every day, which is why I'm turning to alters (my own ones, as well as others). Besides, I think I like a nice alter better than a foil in many cases anyway.
I should be receiving a nice alter from a certain Half Man, Half Potato any day now.
Your alters are cool and all, but they should go in here in the future:
These are actual cards though, that have had their art replaced. My understanding is that the other thread is for full digital renders. These are real physical cards that have been physically altered (with digital art). That doesn't seem like it should matter in this context, compared to painted alters.
