Does anyone think we could get a Pokemon TCG Cube to work?
I'm pretty sure it wouldn't work, because of the need of redundancy of Pokemon for evolutions, and the lacking of the highlander rule really effecting the game.
HOWEVER, I do enjoy me some Pokemon, so if anyone has got any ideas I'm very open to them!
P.S.: I'm not sure if it's the right place for this, mods, but I figured if anyone could help me figure this out it would be the experienced cubers out there!
A pokemon cube is not only possible, it is very fun! A few of my friends and I have been working on building one for about a year now, and have started (very recently) to blog about it. Check it out at http://pokecube.wordpress.com/ Somethings have to be changed to make it work for a different game, but overall the experience has been solid and fun.
I am the moderator of this forum, and a huge Pokemon fan. I will allow it.
I started work on a pokemon themed custom cube a few months ago. But school got in the way so I had to put the project on hold until the end of the semester. (last class is tommorow). http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=377746
I had considered making a pokemon themed cube, but the evolution mechanic seemed ill-suited for the endevor. The only way I could figure to get around this is to errata cards to different creature types. Like all Cindiquills, Torchic, Chimchars, and Tepigs become Charmanders. This would probably involve some sort of photoshop action to do correctly.

Thanks for the replies! I'll be checking out both of those links after school today
On the evolution mechanic: I was thinking of doing something like 4 different Charmander, 3 different Charmeleon, and 2 different Charizard, or something like that in the cube. We could also try drafting "evolution packs", where we do a pack of basics, then stage 1, then stage 2, ect. Just thoughts before I read either link, you guys could have welled discussed these already

This is the process we basically settled on. Instead of doing a mutant evolution lines or errataing cards, we focused on finding likes that fits. For example, we play 8 different Horsea, 6 different Seadra, and 4 different Kingdra. This way evolution lines still work but it still keeps the singleton nature of the cube intact.
That face-up drafting style Travy talked about on his blog seems pretty neat for this. So, let me get this right: You lay out 16 cards from the cube face-up and go around making picks from that, unlike divvying out packs and drafting?
Do you play any LV.Xs? Those were around last I played, and they were pretty sweet.

Yep, that is correct. It is slightly more time consuming, but it helps people figure out evolution lines and watch for cards way better than random packs ever could. It also helps with hate drafting. In this style, if you hate draft, you are getting any evolution lines either, making your deck really bad too. So there is basically a social contract that a little hate drafting is okay, but don't do it too often because not only will to upset people, but guarantee your deck will suffer greatly.
Right now we don't play any LV.X mostly for balance reasons since there are not LV.X for each evolution line in the cube.
That makes sense. Would you be hesitant to add even a few LV. X's?
That could be a possibility. It is just something we haven't tried yet mostly due to balance reasons. That is also one of the great things about cube, you can customize as you like.
When I get around to making this myself, I'll try out some Lvl. X's. I loved those things when I was playing. Worked so much better than previous mechanics like EX's and stuff

The Pokecube is tons of fun. Took a lot of time and effort to make it work, but the end product is great. If you get a chance to play it let me know.
I'm thinking of carbon-copying your list when I get around to making Pokecube. However, I will definitely be making changes to it based on what I like (the Fossil Ditto I mentioned on the blog).
Also, FYI I do keep up with your blog and I find it very helpful and insightful. Keep up the good work

Thanks and glad to hear it! He had to do a few things to get the game to fit in a cube structure, which takes a bit of explaining. Also, having multiple cards all with the same name is a bit annoying, wish it was like Magic where everyone automatically knows the card by name alone. Alas, cannot be helped. If you get a chance to try the cube out let me know how it goes.
I spent awhile looking through your blog and I gotta say you've done a great job putting this thing together.
The only thing I wish you had up were some pictures to make it easier to see the different versions you're running of each Pokemon.
How much would you say it cost you to put that together?
There are some cards that are in rotation right now, and those go for some money. All the ones not legal though wouldn't be a whole lot of money to acquire.

Sadly the Pokemon TCG does not have anything near the Gatherer. Plus, since multiple cards have the same name, it can be awkward. One of the reasons why I am doing the "What's that Pokemon" series is to show exactly what cards are in the cube via pictures. Since the set listings are posted, you can also look up each card, just takes another step which I wish wasn't there.
The cube cost a couple hundred bucks, that includes buying 700 Dragon shield sleeves and everything else. While the majority of the cards are cheap (many rares are a $1 or cheaper) sometimes you have to pay more to find some cards. Some cards might be harder to find and unless you have a store near you that sells singles, you will have to order some cards online which adds to the cost. Some of the newer, popular cards also tend to be slightly more. Like all cubes, some investment up front to get the cards, but after that it is free fun outside of updates.
I definitely like the evolution lines switches, particularly the Charmander -> Torchic line switch. There have been plently of cool Blazikens printed, particularly those with Firestarter.

Was Scyther > Scizor ever considered? Or does the abundance of Steel type Scizor cards keep that pool too shallow?
EDIT: I actually looked and realized that all but 2 Scizor are Metal... So much for that idea!
