So I saw Vance's Blasting Cannons spoiled today and immediately fell in love. Flavorwise, it should have been an artifact (I can't for the life of me figure out why Wizards didn't do this). The card is meant to be in a burn deck of some sort, maybe a UR/x or BR/x build of some sort. It may be too slow for Ramunap Red, but I'm sure people playing Red are gonna attempt to add it in anyway. I personally thought of a mechanic that perfectly supports Cannons that hasn't been quite popular as of yet: Afflict
Afflict is the great mechanic for Cannons, especially R cards with afflict. Some generate mana (Nehab, the Eternal) or allow us to cast instants and sorceries for free (Wildfire Eternal) when certain conditions are met. Then I started thinking of ways we can cast cheap spells to flip Cannons into Spitefire Bastion without needlessly emptying our hand. Cheap, efficient burn spells are useful (obviously), but what other spells are there that cost 0 or can easily have their CMC's reduced? What type of permanent is good at this?... Artifacts! And that's when a deck idea began to form:
And before anyone says it, yes, I realize this deck is running a low land count even though I'm running multiple 4-6CMC cards. Without having yet tested it, the theory is that in between all of the card draw/cycle/tutor (Implement of Combustion, Inferno Jet, Desert of the Fervent, Renegade Map) I should be able to hit my land drops fairly consistently. And once I have Neheb, the Eternal and Wildfire Eternal on the battlefield, I won't have need of large amounts of mana. I love that Jet is great CA early and a devastating burn spell later in the game.
If you're accepting constructive criticism, playing 12 (nearly) do-nothing artifacts to turn on 2 enchantments in the decks seems very bad.
If you wait until turn 6, Vance's counts as the first spell then you can play something like shock and opt to flip it.
Eh, haven't re-visited this thread since before the full XLN spoiler came out a week or so ago. But I agree with your assessment of my initial build and have made some improvements to the deck. I don't really want to post the new decklist until I get some actual testing in. I've been busy focusing my efforts on my U/x Fliers as of late. If you're really interested, I can post the new list.
