When I checked spoilers this morning I was pretty stoked to find Kruphix, God of Horizons. My first thought, and perhaps this may be too obvious, was to play him in control with Mistcutter Hydra and Volcanic Geyser as finishers.
So far I think these would be included in the deck:
I do not not have a lot of experience playing control, but I do like to brew. So, I wanted to reach out and see what others thought might be a good direction to take this deck in.
The issue is that if you're playing control, you need some early-turn plays. White-blue get detention sphere, black or red get various removal options. Blue and green? That probably requires counterspells and bouncing. Maybe you could just run cheap burn, or Mizzium Mortars, but you need something to do before turn 5.
So far, my pick for the card that works best with Kruphix is Syncopate. I know it seems a bit boring but it's what makes the most sense to me. I worry about the mana ability of his since Omnath, Locus of Mana was never a tournament staple and provided a comparable ability. I think he has his uses but can't be built around and needs a deck that takes its time.
The mana base for this deck is HARSH. I wanted to run Courser to be a blocker and mana bump that would survive Anger, but it's just not viable to need double-green, or double-blue, or double-red all by turn 3. So I tried to rely on scrylands for early turns and then counters to deal with things that Anger and Whelming Wave can't stop. Thoughtflare and Izzet Charm help pitch extraneous Kruphixes.
Really? A 3 mana hard counter that scries, vs. a spell that costs more the later the game goes that stops card recursion? What card recursion is there? Are we only wanting it so that we can play it for x=1 early on?
syncopate counters cheaper early on, and cost doesn't matter later on because limitless mana is the whole point of the deck, and only requires U as opposed to UU so can be cast for URR, UGG, UGR at 3CMC.
Plus, there's a pretty gigantic difference between a 2-mana counter and a 3-mana counter, tempo wise.
I mean just as a baseline advantage to syncopate, you can jam 2 mutavaults in the deck. If you go dissolve there's no way you're getting your mana base smoothed out with a UU 3cmc spell you must be able to cast turn 3 with a 3-colour build. Even with mana confluence, it's going to be a nightmare to cast dissolve consistently turn 3 with 3 colour builds.
Also, since I'm at it, steam augury is better than thoughtflare, cyclonic rift is better than whelming wave, and scatter arc is... not a good card.
I also like the OP's suggestion of mistcutter hydra. it seems like the best finisher spell for this deck, as it can't be countered. It can get chumped all day though so of course you run a couple of the clan defiances.
I'll agree with Syncopate, then. Not that I would ever drop the $100+ to get a playset of Mutavaults.
Steam Augury is cheaper to cast, but they'll never give you Kruphix (if it turns out the god is any good).
The Wave is for creature heavy decks, to help us survive long enough to actually use the god. Rift is better against blue-white in the late game, I feel, so I'd have it in the sideboard.
Scatter Arc gets no love. Would you run Dismiss? Against control decks, Scatter Arc is Dismiss with an easier mana cost.
Mistcutter needs an empty board to be useful. I prefer burn.

If you have a budget, you shouldn't play magic competitively
