Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum and recently returning to the game after many years away. I currently play casually, but I am wanting to get into a more competitive environment (branch out into local game nights and go from there). Here is the deck that I have come up with.
The deck is starting to become more of a standard green devotion with a splash of black, but the original idea behind the deck was to generate +1/+1 counters and hit Formidable quickly.
Why is deathtouch a theme? If you're playing +1/+1 counters and big creatures, you should have no problem dealing with big threats. I think things like Sedge Scorpion actually go against your strategy of achieving formidable, so you may want to cut him out.
I may have misspoke when I said deathtouch is a theme. I included a few cards like Sedge Scorpion in order to have a Turn 1 creature that can effectively trade up/block bigger creatures earlier in the game. It may not be necessary, but that was my thinking behind it. I am more than open to suggestions though.
Well maybe im wrong but having a formidable plan deck with Abzan Beastmaster, Sultai Flayer, Ukud Cobra is a little weird but interesting. I would consider maybe dropping 1 or 2 of these card for Conifer Strider.
But don't put more than 2 cause its not good against a lot of decks but works well for formidable.
I see where you are coming from. Here was my thinking around those cards: Abzan Beastmaster has been good for generating a card advantage (saved one of my games last night). Sultai Flayer and Ukud Cobra are probably the two that I'm least confident in. 2/5 deathouch is nice (especially when played with Abzan Beastmaster), while Sultai Flayer can generate life which also works well with my other cards. Ideally I would only go with one, but neither have seemed to factor enough into play to sway my opinion one way or another.
I'm working on getting a playset of Den Protector as well as one or two more Llanowar Wastes
I will update my main deck once I work out how I want to incorporate these new cards. Any additional input would also be greatly appreciated. I intend to keep my main approach the same, but the additional removal will be helpful against fast aggro decks and bringing in some graveyard mechanics against control.
Deck list updated in original post. Atarka Beastbreaker has been dropped in favor of a playset of Den Protector. A few others have been moved to the sideboard to make room for additional removal spells in the main deck. On the chopping block is Sultai Flayer and Ukud Cobra, but at the moment I do not have any replacements for them so they'll sit in the sideboard until I figure out something better.

Are you recommending this as a sideboard item or a replacement for something in the main board? If so what would you recommend swapping out? Thanks!
