Basically, you control the board until you can take over with your walkers. Most decks in the format are vulnerable to End Hostilities right now and we take advantage of that. We're probably a bit weak to red already, so the full set of Rams is in the board with several other options if we prove to be downright bad against them.
This deck is all about card quality. We have all 12 scrylands for filtering and Chandra, Read the Bones, and Banners for draw. Why no Crackling Doom or Butcher of the Horde? We don't need them. We just remove, remove, remove until we can just lock the game down with one or more planeswalkers.
Have you had a chance to do any testing yet? I've put together a similar list that I want to get more walkers in, but I've only had a chance to play against mono black aggro. The list performed pretty well, but you can't really take away too much from one match up.
So far I've really liked Crackling Doom as a way to get a threat off the board and to get in for a little bit of damage. Crater's Claw also really surprised me by just winning games out of no where. The look on your opponent's face when you top deck this late game and dome them for 10 is wonderful. Haunted Plate Mail did some work too by activating it after a wrath and swinging. I even got to live the dream one time with it, by strapping it to a dragon Sarkhan and swinging for 8 in the air with pseudo vigilance! Plate Mail was really just a place holder until I rounded up some other cards, but fun to mess around with. Like I said, I think upping the amount of walkers will go a long way, but I think Mardu control has real potential.
Some things to think about: Are the banners worth it? I'd likely jump to 26 lands and get rid of them. Too slow...is that what you want to be casting on Turn 3 against Aggro? Likely a bad draw mid-late game as well. Stoke the Flames seems worse without any creatures and Mardu Charm is fairly lackluster in a control shell. Crackling Doom is the far better option in that slot. I'd also think about cutting some temples for the gain-a-life lands--likely 4. The little life gained helps against aggro --especially with 4 Seize and 2 Bones main. And fetches.
@Mindrotted- I think the creature base isn't really helping. 4 Plate mail? I could see 1 or 2...but 4? Seems excessive. And I am not sure Soldier is the right spot for a control deck. I understand it is good in a format full of multi color but wouldn't you rather turn 1 Seize/Despise instead? I like your spells...minus the crater's claw...
Here is what I am working with...I went 3-0 last night in my first tourney with the deck. Beat Mardu Aggro, Esper Control and Mono Black Aggro.

(I cannot figure out how to get this into a nice, pretty decklist...)
1 Bloodfell Caves
4 Bloodstained Mire
2 Mountain
2 Nomad Outpost
3 Plains
3 Scoured Barrens
3 Swamp
3 Temple of Malice
2 Temple of Silence
2 Temple of Triumph
1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
Sideboard
3 Anger of the Gods
2 Deflecting Palm
1 Despise
1 Empty the Pits
1 End Hostilities
2 Magma Spray
3 Nyx-Fleece Ram
2 Suspension Field
The SB is definitely a work in progress...some other cards I've thought about:
Reprisal
Hushwing Gryff
Phyrexian Revoker
Erase
Magma Jet
You just wrap it all in "deck" tags and it will format automatically.
The banners are supposed to be accelerants into the lategame which may be turned in later for cards. I was pretty unsure about them but I will still probably test them.
As for Stoke, I figured some burn that was for 4 points was warranted given the creatures we are seeing. In hindsight I feel like Banishing Light may be better.
Crackling Doom does make a lot more sense than the charm. The mode that attracted me to the charm—the discard mode—seems like it might be peripheral with Thoughtseize and Despise already on board.
I probably won't test the deck until next week, though, so I have some time to tweak.
Banishing Light was excellent for me last night ...especially against Esper where I could Banishing Light his Banishing Light.
I understand the 4 damage card being nice but w Downfalls, Dooms, Banishing , End Hostilities...we have he tools to be a little more efficient with our mana.
Having Stormbreath and Sarkhan was awesome ...it's hard for opponents to deal with all the Walkers plus Stormbreah.
Murderous Cut was also absurd as I got to cast it for 1 mana a few times during the tourney.
Congrats on the 3-0 and thanks for the reply. I agree with you about the Plate Mail. My plan moving forward is to pick up some more walkers as threats and cut 2-4 of them. Soldier is still a bit weird. You're right, I would much rather be despising/thoughtseizing T1, but I also wanted more 1 drops to help my curve. He might be better suited for the SB as I consider him an honorary removal spell against aggro. I'm also considering moving anger to my SB, but I need to get a better idea of the meta first. If aggro doesn't do well at the pro tour and it's more walkers/green monsters I think it would make sense to replace it with banishing light.
Did you get to play Mogis? If so, what did you think of him?

The jury is still out on Mogis. I only resolved him once and it was in the Mono Black Aggro match-up --I lost the game he resolved as I couldn't find enough removal, believe it or not, in that game. The 2 damage per turn wasn't that relevant in that particular game but I still want to get some more reps in with him. I think it can speed up your win by a couple of turns if found early enough in the game. I do think he will be good in the Midrange and Control match ups though as 2 damage per turn does create some pressure for your opponent (on top of the pressure from our Walkers...and in my case Stormbreath) so you can force them to use more resources to deal with your threats...I think we have a better long game than the other control decks out there right now.
Mogis may just be bad with Erase and Deicide out there now but again...it's simply another card for your opponent to think about and deal with.
I can certainly see it being relegated to the SB, though. Time will tell.
Hi. Nice lists! I have been playing Mardu midrange... but was having some issues specially vs G/x devotion decks. Taking some ideas from you guys and the Colorado states top 8 I put together a control version. It is a lot of fun!
One card I ported from midrange which think is just nuts is the Ashcloud phoenix. I gives the deck a recurring threat which is hard to deal with. So far my finishers/PW are:
2 sarkhan
2 elspeth
1 liliana
1 sorin (has bit hit or miss thus far)
2 chandra
which are complemented with 1 Empty the pits (great card for our kind of deck), 1 Resolute archangel (the lifegain effect is so good!) and 2 Ashcoulds. The deck cannot realistically win fast, but it controls the board very well, which in this midrangey environment is what one needs.
Has anyone tested the control matchup much (esper for example)? I am playing 4 thoughtseize MD + 2 despise, 2 stain he mind , 2 stormbreath SB. Any other options out there? Will try Mogis.
Thanks for your post. Ashcloud is an interesting idea.
I think Empty the Pits is sweet but I just can't bring myself to put in Main Deck as I am sooooo afraid of drawing it in the early game, or god forbid, my opening hand. The fear is real haha.
I just started playing with the deck as the format is brand new but I did 2-0 Esper and I never felt behind or worried. We have better threats and better removal. All Blue gave him was draw and Prognostic Sphinx (say hello to Crackling Doom). It was fairly easy to play around the counters and our discard can pick em off, too. Granted, the Esper player I played wasn't very good as it was easy to bait him to counter my "medium impact" cards so I could stick Stormbreath or Sarkhan. Ashiok can be a bit of an issue, but between Downfall and Banishing light (and discard) we have some options.
I played Sphinx's Rev for a long time in Standard and knowing that Blue control decks can't just Sphinx their way out of trouble really eases the mind to be honest.
Thanks for the reply. I have played Empty the pits mostly as a Sb option lately... vs counter burn decks (I have surprisingly played a few of them) is a house when they tap EOT to draw or whatever. It is a great finisher for the mirror or grindy matchups. Anyway, here is my updated list. Have been very happy with it while playing in 2 man queues on MTGO. The 'weak' spot is sorin... I have my doubts about him. He is good but not sarkhan good... I find it crucial in this meta to have as many < 3 CC instant removal as possible. I am playing EOT removal, go, EOT removal, go, and so on. Until I can land a threat like phoenix or a PW, and follow it next turn with an End Hostilities. At that point I feel the game should be mostly under control.
Sorin is surely better in Mardu Midrange as most of those lists run Rabblemaster, Brimaz, Butcher...so the +1 is awesome.
Sorin's +1 for us is a bit underwhelming...But only 2 tick ups and you can ultimate him which is very scary for your opponent. His -2 is also pretty good (which in turn makes his +1 a bit better). Worst case he's a "gain life" Planeswalker--your opponent will want to get rid of him so it saves you some damage.
And hey, he gets better if you board in Ram! haha.
I will keep him. For sure it can be a life saver..just rarely on his own. I have had swings of the sphinx or the phoenix put me back in the game when in hairy situations. I am enjoying the deck a lot so far. I am running 3 Crackling doom..but they are sooo good. Specially vs UW heroic. Give protection to that! I may take them to 4..or maybe in sb. Ashcloud has been really nice also.
What matchup is giving you trouble? So far I feel pretty well vs the field in general, but haven't played a long tourney..just 2-man queues on MTGO which may have a different meta all together.
Was wondering how are you guys doing vs jeskai tokens? I played 3 2-man queues in a row vs them yesterday..and lost all of them. I understand their 'engine' is the Mardu Ascendancy, the rest I can deal with no problem, but it is still giving me trouble =( It all boils down to my ability to destroy the ascendancy before they start abusing it... Any suggestions? Thanks
Also, I think someone already suggested this. But what about running Brimaz MD? Seems like a good early attack/defense who, in the worst case, eats a hero's downfall or, in the best, puts pressure on the other player. Can anyone report on their experience with this if they have tested it?

I shy away from Brimaz MD or anywhere really because that's not this deck. End Hostilities murks him anyway.
If you need to beat enchantments then run Erase in the sideboard or more Banishing Light in your 75.
Thanks for the reply. will try the Erase out, or, for more flexibility, a couple of Deicides..It also deals with the Purophoros very nicely! Hopefully with 3 Utter Ends + 2 Deicide after board I will deal with it in time =)
I am guessing you went with the Tormenting voice over Read the bones for the life gain factor? Have you noticed a significant difference?

I've been toying with some other decks so I haven't had time to do much testing.
From what some of my friends on Facebook are saying, there is a Mardu walkers deck running around at the Pro Tour. I'm interested to see the list and how much it deviates from what you, I, and others have brewed here.
Jsut saw it. Apparently Raphael Levy is running it. Looking forward to the full list.
So far:
Raphael Levy (Mardu Planeswalkers)
Notable cards from the deck:
Elspeth, Sun’s Champion
Chained to the Rocks
End Hostilities
Nyx-Fleece Ram G2 & G3
Utter End
Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker
Chandra, Pyromaster
Crackling Doom
Levy posted his list on Twitter. During an interview after round 12, he said that he made the choice to play this last minute. He said that it took him a few rounds to learn the deck, but once he had the feel for it, he thought it was very strong. He specifically mentioned Mardu Charm is "the reason to play this deck".
I feel like Evolving Wilds is a tragically underplayed card. It enables this build to do something a magic deck really shouldn't be able to get away with, splash a single island for just the 4 treasure cruise, while feeding the delve. There really is no substitute for how good Delvecestral Recall feels.
Last tourney I played I went 2-3, not very good. I lost the mirror because he had Stormbreath Dragon, which I wasn't prepared for. Also lost to UB control, a deck we will have real trouble with because we are a control deck without blue. Also lost to Abzan control/weirdness. Should have mulled my 2-lander in game 3.
How does the superfriends mardu match up against the heavy hitters of the format right now? Jeskai? Abzan Mid/aggro?
Also does anyone play the butcher mid version VS the superfriends/control build?
Really trying to find my niche within mardu, and due to me having zero butchers at the moment, I really want some honesty about the superfriends builds.

Victories were Monored Sligh and BW Warriors.
Also does anyone play the butcher mid version VS the superfriends/control build?
Really trying to find my niche within mardu, and due to me having zero butchers at the moment, I really want some honesty about the superfriends builds.
