This is a deck I've come up with to play agaisnt the heavy control meta at my local FNM. Unfortunately I am unable to playtest it against live opponents and feedback regarding what I should change/sideboard is wanted.
Note that I am only a few months into magic currently and gentle handling is appreciated.
How the Deck Should Work In My Mind (With Current Cards):
Discard Effects - Using this to disrupt early game strategy of opponent. Fish for hand information before playing Desecration Demon/Ashiok/Merchant.
Deathrite Shaman - Turns all sorceries/instants mine and opponents into burn spells. Fueled by discard effects and dakra mystic. Can also help with mana fixing if I manage to get lands in graveyard with Mystic.
Dakra Mystic - Card drawing engine and/or draw control against opponent.
D Demon/Merchant - Win condition.
Ashiok/Specter - Allows me to cast opponents spells from their deck/card advantage.
Dakra mystic is BAD if you're using thoughtseize.
"I'm gonna take two and thoughtseize, then let you draw a card for free. You're welcome."
Deathrite shaman. You have no green mana... So it's not quite as good as it's supposed to be.
Specter: You do have islands in the library, so I guess you can play blue spells if it's a creature based deck or bounce.
If you really like blue, soft cancels would probably be better.
This decklist is kinda mediocre control. Your win conditions are good, even though the demon will oftentimes be tapped down, and your black devotion probably not ever high enough to get you there with Merchant.
I'd highly consider putting in some evasive, difficult to kill creatures to win games, as Brain Maggot and Thoughtseize will only go so far in the long game (which is what you are playing if you've only got 6 win cons).
So maybe cut out the blue (islands/dakra/ashiok) and cut Duress to put 3x Pack Rat, 3x Scavenging Ooze, 2x Abrupt Decay?
Also your not the first person to suggest the thoughtseize/dakra thing. Though it's as if everyone forgets that you can choose to dump into the graveyard as well. Which seems like it could be hurting me but with Ashiok ticking every turn it seems that I'm reducing the opponents ability to top deck with dakra (while fueling deathrite)/ ashiok and getting creatures to play with ashiok or has that been found to be inconsistent in play testing?
Ashiok exiles and pulls from exile. It has nothing to do with dakra. Dakra is generally bad for you because control wants to draw deeper and will make better use of it than you on average, meaning that you're wasting a card and mana. More merchants is good. Underworld connections is better than read the bones. There are 2 main ways to fight control. One, blitz thrm. Two, beat them in the long run.
Wait! Ashiok and Liliana Vess.
Soft cancels for noncreatures and kill spells for creatures.
Your win cons? THEIRS!
Keep the brain maggots as chump blockers, keep the duress and thoughtseize.
it's a control deck right? What says "#%*$ you!" like holding someone's Polukranos for 5 turns than just canceling it or doom-blading once it's cast? That's what my deck always did. It was basically just a chump blocker that lasted long enough for me to deal with whatever card it held down.
