All right guys and gals, I've been working on a control deck that will take me all the way no matter where I am. I started out with American control back in December and went to straight UW but with monsters being such a big part of the format, I'm thinking I should splash black. Here's the list I've got:
And now the explanation for each card:
1. aetherling - this choice is pretty obvious, almost guaranteed to stay as long as it's not countered
2. blood baron - main reason I chose black, the lifelink comes in handy against aggressive decks and the protection is just icing on the cake
3. Thassa, god of the sea - I'll just say it was either her or another divination and I believe she will help a whole lot more than one divination. Divination will always draw 2 cards, but if she stays, Thassa could scry so much. And if she doesn't stick, that's one card my opponent is using on her and not my other enchantments
4. supreme verdict - a must have sweeper
5. divination - a simple card that draws 2
6. quicken - I know I'm going to get flack from some people for choosing this card because of it's inconsistency, but I've got to say that I'm surprised at how often I've been able to quicken and supreme verdict. It's much more often than I had thought, and at the very least, it's a 1 mana draw 1
7. dissipate - Just another counter spell, but it exiles the card instead
8. dissolve - A good old counter spell with scry 1 is hard to pass up
9. last breath - this is for all the mutavaults and chandra's pheonix's of the world
10. doom blade - The other reason I chose black. Spot removal for most of the decks out there, but mostly G/R/x monsters. Helps big time with stormbreath and mistcutter
11. hero's downfall - extra removal for creatures and planeswalkers
12. deicide - excellent removal for any enchantment, and if it gets a god card then that's all the better
13. sphinx's revelation - most obvious card draw and lifegain choice. I know I'm not playing 4 and that may be a mistake, but I only have 3 so I'm playing that many
14. Jace AoT - Excellent card. Some say he's not as good anymore, but I have to disagree. He can essentially gain me life when creatures attack him, he can draw me cards, and if he eats a hero's downfall then that's one less they don't have for my elspeth or blood baron
15. Elspeth - She is amazing. She gives ground blockers all day long, she takes care of anything power 4 or greater which could include my own blood baron, but I'm okay with that, and she wins games
16. detention sphere - still pretty good, I mean, not as good with all the enchantment hate but it's still good
17. banishing light - to be honest, the one of is just because I couldn't find another detention sphere, but I'm going to make it sound like a thought out decision and say it's for opposing detention spheres
18. lands - the lands are pretty obvious, i think. Scry lands are a must. I don't have many shock lands and I'm not about to buy them with the format changing in two months. The black and white pain land is a good come into play untap land, but the life loss might be a problem, I'm not sure. And the urbog land is a decent choice to help with the black
19. dispel - I would bring this in against control mirrors and burn decks
20. gainsay - For control and mono blue devotion, it's not as popular anymore, but I'd rather not be blown out by it
21. negate - Counterspell for control, burn, and decks with lots of planeswalkers
22. blind obedience - For anything with hasty guys and whip of erebos
23. revoke existence - Extra enchantment hate, I haven't seen many artifacts played, but it also removes those
24. Jace, memory adept - Extra win con for control and anything that doesn't play whip of erebos. Otherwise, I'm just feeding the whip
25. blood baron - For control mirror and aggro decks
26. dark betrayal - Purely for mono black devotion
27. ultimate price - removal for any mono colored creature: polukranos, mistcutter, stormbreath, desecration demon, pack rat, master of waves, brimaz, etc.
28. glare of heresy - for the white weenie decks and banishing lights and elspeth's
29. fated retribution - Mostly for the monsters match-up
Just one question for you all, how good is obzedat, ghost council right now? It would probably take the place of memory adept and be for the control match-ups.
And that's the deck and card choice explanations. I'm planning on using this at an SCG IQ at the end of the month so I need it to be good. If you guys have any feedback on my card choices or advice on sideboarding with certain matches then I'd be happy to hear it. Just no thoughtseize. I realize that the deck is missing it and I'm sorry to all you thoughtseize lovers, but it's not going in there. I don't have it and just can't afford it right now. The only way it's going in there is if someone decides to give them to me. But besides that, give any feedback/advice.
Thanks for all the help in advance!
