Hey guys. I am trying to build my girlfriend a fun deck she can have to play in local tournaments, but I have been out of the MTG scene for some time now and my current knowledge of cards for Standard is limited at best. We found some cards that seem potentially good, things Traumatize and Tome scour but a part from that I am not sure what else to add. We threw in a few Divination and stuff to fill, as well as Jace, Mind Adept and some counterspells like Negate . What I am worried about is she won't be able to survive long enough to empty her opponents deck.
I would love to here some community suggestions on what is out there and what we could possibly use to add some survival to the deck.
So the milling ("milling" is what we call discarding from the top of the deck, due to the age old card millstone) is actually not to mill their entire deck out, but rather to get big fat creatures for really cheap, really fast, with the milling as an alternate way to win. Also, look into psychic strike, pilfered plans, and doom blade.
Traumatize is kinda bad in practice. Slow and not as impactful as it seems.

Ok, thanks for the suggestions. Milling yes, I knew I knew the term but for the life of me, 9 years out of Magic, you forget things. I agree in the opinion that Traumatize is bad in practice. The concept of the deck is built on what my gf likes, more so than whats 100% the best. I am just trying to make the deck as good as possible around what she would like to play. By no standard does the deck need to play and win every tournament, but i'd like to see it win occasionally.
Milling features heavily in here because it's another means to keep threats out of their hand. Cards like Thoughtseize and Mind Rot to make them discard. Lots of removal, both targetted and indirect (to deal with Hexproof and/or Indestructible creatures), such has Hero's Downfall, Far // Away and Drown in Sorrow. The milling in this deck comes from Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver, Jace, Memory Adept, and Consuming Aberration. I think it still has room for improvement, but I am still happy with it's performance. This could be a good base to work from if you don't want Tier 1/major competition winning decks.

Hand Hate with a Side of Milling
