I'm a little weary of adding red due to the fact that it significantly upgrades tidebinder mage, and that match is already pretty shaky. I was running gore-house chainwalker and spike jester though, in addition to rakdos cackler. In a build with just spike jester, I guess we're a bit less at risk. Love me some gore-house, though
Honestly, I think you should replace Herald of torment with Liliana's reaver, because the reaver is like the demon, and has to be answered to when it enters the battlefield.
Nope. This is an aggressive deck. Aggressive decks would much rather play the option than can win the game immediately, and efficiently deal damage in all other cases.

- To my youngest sister when she was 6.
Everyone knows that good luck and good game are such insincere terms that any man who does not connect his right hook with the offender's jaw on the very utterance of such a phrase is no man I would consider as such.
I think Pain Seer, Thrill Kill, Rakdos Shred Freak, Brain Maggot are all ahead of Spiteful Returned. Plus he pushes you to save him for 4 Mana and at that slot I'd just have Desecration Demon.

Bestow is an opportunity, that's all. You definitely shouldn't hesitate to drop a creature on curve if it's the correct play.
Also, Spiteful Returned is pretty amazing. You should give him another chance.

Wrong wrong wrong. Spiteful is the card that stirs the drink in a mono black aggro deck. Unless you play the deck yourself, more than casually, you just won't know the value and power that that single card brings.

Brain Maggot is better than Spiteful. Not only is the synergy between it and Thoughtseize awesome but it really helps against multiple types of decks. A turn 1 thoughtseize followed by a maggot can win games especially against control. It also fits right between lifebane and thoughtseize to ruin green decks. I like spiteful but I want the 2 drops to do more. Pain seer draws cards. Maggot stops major threats. Master, Herald, and the marauders win games. The one drops provide the army.
Just to emphasize my point. An opponent will probably choose maggot over spiteful about 90% of the time. That tells me which one is the greater threat.

How many Pro Tours have you been to?
Tremendous answer to my question of; do you actually play this deck or are you theory crafting? I applaud you for your thoughtful rebuttal. Allow me to retort with a little something from my verbose lexicon;

No, wrong. The maggot has no offense or defensive ability to protect itself or you. You're never going to swing in with a maggot and when the maggot dies they get their card back. This isn't o-ring we're talking about here. There's WAY too much removal in the standard meta right now. Yes, it's good to disrupt their hand. Yes it slows them down but it's like lifegain; it will never win you a game where as life drain will. Bestow a Spiteful and even if the creature dies you still have a creature.
Please, I encourage people to play their decks how they want and whatever is more fun, but please don't state something as factual when in fact, it's so untested no one really knows. The pre-release was today for crying out loud, he's not even playable until next week.

Did you miss the part where I said I Q'd for the Force of Will online with just the Mono Black Aggro deck? And you started it with the 'derg, casual, derg'.
Spiteful Returned is a decent card, but simply stating, 'wrong wrong wrong' over and over doesn't make it right. Maybe you should follow your own advice?
And 3-1 at casual local events means nothing. I think that's why you have such bias for Spiteful Returned. It works in a limited, bad player enviroment and now you have dubbed it the glue that holds MBA together (It's not).
The 2 drop a lot is just weak, no way around it. Maggot and returned are both ok against the same matchups, and mediocre therwise. Play whatever you want, all the action is at 1 and 3. Personally, I still lean towards thrill-kill assassin as my main 4 of, and constantly test my secondary 2 drop.
The hostility lol. I to am a MBA mage. Have been since about it. I have been on quite a tear the past 3 tourneys. 3 straight 1st place. I was able to get my set of Masters and Scarhides. It is true that the hot spots are 1 drops and 3 drops. I am playing SCG Cincinnati with the deck. Just have to get the correct configuration for it. My main issue is the 2 drop slot. Preliminary thoughts are that I will run 1 2 drop and its been narrowed down to Spiteful(Leaning on him because a turn 3 Master turn 4 bestow Spitefull swing six lose 2 life seems good. The other is Pain Seer. While good to draw cards if its not swingin its not drawing. Leaves the 3 drop slot which will be Herald, Master, and some number of Marauder. I think You play what your style goes with. Shouldnt be arguing about
Anyone considered Immortal Servitude? With the low curve, the most you need to spend on it is 6 for X=3. Actually, casting it for that much could be a late game win-con because it brings back Master of the Feast, Herald of Torment, and Mogis's Marauder to give each of them haste and intimidate.

Bad player enviroment? Didn't know winning the big GP was a limited enviroment.
Moving on, I'm willing to go on record and say that Spiteful is better than Maggot in this list and twice on Sundays. Always.
How are we all feeling about Feasts? 5/5 Flyer for three? Insane! But that card draw.. What do we take out of the three spot? Discuss!
As much as I hate doing it im moving it to the sb it has to be lifebane zombie imo. 3 drop for 3 drop. I dont think it will be herald. And im gonna run with 22 land. Been working real well for me 18 swamp 4 mutavault
Do you think running just 4 of each thoughtseize and downfall will work? For fnm tomorrow as my prep for scg cincinnati im running 4 downfall 4 seize and rolling the dice and running 4 doom blade. I think there will be alot of rg bw and naya floating that justifys it.

You know your local meta better than others, but monoblack aggro and monoblack devotion are both quite good. Why not run ultimate price over doom blade if you feel like you need more removal? Maindeck lifebane zombie is another good option if you anticipate those decks.

Ultimately.. Yes, I think it will. It is meta oriented, BUT if I were to roll the dice and add more, it would be Devour Flesh. We have zero way of beating a Blood Baron. Also Devour stops an early Sylvan Caryatid to push more damage through.
Anyone else catch the monoblack aggro deck coverage at starcitygames this morning? It was kind of a textbook example of how NOT to play the deck. Kept a 5 land hand on the draw one game. Another game (against a midrange deck), he had no relevant turn 3 or 4 plays, holding on to Herald of Torment trying to force a bestow opportunity. Finally just hard cast it on turn 6, where it had no effect on the game what-so-ever.

I agree on Devour Flesh. That said, I'd rather be using that slot on the marauder to push damage through and so I have less dead cards against U/W, which will be out in force.

- To my youngest sister when she was 6.
My ten kill spells are officially:
3x Bile Blight
4x Ultimate Price
3x Hero's Downfall
All mainboard.
Trying a sideboard of:
4x Duress
3x Doom Blade
3x Boon of Erebos
2x Lifebane Zombie
3x Dark Betrayal
Control is my biggest weakness. Glaring in fact.
3x Mutavault
20x Swamp
4x Tormented Hero
4x Gnarled Scarhide
4x Rakdos Cackler
3x Herald of Torment
2x Mogis's Marauder
4x Master of the Feast
3x Pain Seer
4x Brain Maggot
3x Bile Blight
2x Ultimate Price
What do you guys think? I intentionally cut a Mutavault as you need heavy, heavy black.
4x Spiteful Returned or bust. I'm not in love with Brain Maggot.

EDIT:
Here's my version of monoblack, FWIW
4 Rackdos Cackler
4 gnarled scarhide
4 tormented hero
4 brain maggot
4 spiteful returned
4 herald of torment
2 lifebane zombie
2 ultimate price
2 hero's downfall
Other:
4 Thoughtseize
3 hall of triumph
Lands
19 Swamp
4 mutavault
4 dark betrayal
4 duress
2 lifebane zombie
3 doom blade
2 devour flesh
The deck has the max discard package, so should be solid against control, and comes prepared for the mirror and green or white creature decks.
