M:tG Cribbs just did a bunch of videos on youtube using John Torrez's list. I watched the first couple game and he didn't do very well at all. I don't think he understood the deck and match ups very well.
Sorry, but I feel like the list he used was pretty much garbage. 2x Urban Evolution as your only card draw simply isn't good enough, I also highly question the Negates and 3x Merciless Eviction main deck. The sideboard also felt questionable. Why 4x Crackling Parameter ?
I personally felt he could have done much better with more card draw (probably around 3-4 Urban Evolution + 1-2 Sphinx's Revelation), less clutter (aka Negate, Bow of Nylea, Merciless Eviction) and potentially a 1-of Crackling Parameter + Elixir of Immortality in the main deck. The Negates and Evictions could have easily gone to the side board and done terrific work from over there.
Keep in mind that the list he was playing was Joe Torres' list, which is up there in terms of best results in an actual tournament setting. So I feel like you can give it a bit of leeway.
Regardless, I do agree that the list is not optimal, but for different reasons.
Getting ready for this week's FNM using my new build. This time around, the main board uses the BANT (WUG) configuration as its primary shell. I move all sources of R and B to the sideboard and focuses only on Maze's End as a win-con for game 1. Games 2 & 3 is where my other win-cons (Crackling Perimeter and Jace, Memory Adept) and tools kick in depending on the deck I'm battling. So here is my BANT Maze's End Deck:
At first, I'm doubting Courser of Kruphix since it plays the top card of our library revealed. But then I'm beginning to get convinced of its potential. As for me using basic lands over shock lands, it's my way of dodging Burning Earth (I want to use Revoke Existence to something else like gods). I don't really want to shock myself at any time (despite having many sources of life gain in here). I understand some people wanting to use shock lands but as for me, I find it risky.

I understand your desire to run 1 ofs of some gates, but keep in mind that a single unfortunate nightveil specter or ashiok activation can completely destroy your win condition.
Ashiok is my only problem though since I could handle the specter. I'm still testing this build and might still change.
What about Kiora's Follower here as a 2 or 3 of? Over Negate or Quicken? You could Maze's End twice in a turn?
Yes, you could activate Maze's End again, but you won't be able to play it until next turn. The reason is first, after activating Maze's End, you fish out a gate and put it into play. Then you play Maze's End as your land drop for the turn. If you untap it using Kiora's follower, you can search again but you can't play it until next turn. But then if you've fetched your 9th gate and fetch again using Kiora's Follower, you will win the game.

Hey all, I've been looking to play this deck for a while now, and I've decided to take it to tonight's FNM at my lgs. I don't really have or know about the sideboard, or if I have a good maindeck. Thoughts or tips anyone?
Spells: 31
4 Fog
4 Druid's Deliverance
4 Riot Control
4 Defend the Hearth
2 Crackling Perimeter
3 Detention Sphere
4 Sphinx's Revelation
4 Supreme Verdict
2 Fated Retribution
What do you guys think? Ideas for a sideboard? I'm thinking 4x Saruli Gatekeepers, maybe 3 Slaughter Games?
Also, do I run artifact destruction for Pithing Needle? I feel like that card can really shut down our main win.
Saruli's are good against the aggro/burn decks, so should be good in the sideboard. People are mixed on Slaughter Games. Nice to nab Gray Merchant with though. Definitely have a couple answers to Needle, either Wear/Tear or Destructive Revelry. I like Revelry just because you can redirect the damage to kill a planeswalker occasionally, but I play the control version so YMMV.
Merciless Eviction actually deals with artifacts, I mean 6 mana to exile a pithing needle is dumb, but just saying
So I really really want to build and run a maze's end deck, they look like tons of fun in this format, but I'm curious, do you guys think 2 Kiora and 2 Sphinx's revs is enough to be viable/competitive at the FNM/Local level? I have 2 kioras, so I'm just trying to work within my budget here :/
I dropped the one of perimeter and a cyclonic rift. kiora is another wincon game 1 so I don't durdle to death. Elixirs are there because mill is a thing in my meta.
The turnout was somewhat small, only 55 people so we had 6 rounds. I ended up 4-2 at the end of it, 11-5 in games, and in 14th place. Here's a quick recap of the highlights of the tournament:
Round 1 vs Esper Midrange/Control - Lose 1-2
Game 1 I grind him through the Maze, kicking and screaming with no contest. Game two I lose due to two critical misplays on my part involving when to wrath, and game three saw me draw all my irrelevant hate cards that I sided in and nothing meaningful to allow the deck to perform while he slams Blood Barons.
Round 2 vs Orzhov Midrange - Win 2-1
Game one sees me open with a hand that has double Verdict, but no Green, Blue, or Vines to actually cast them. I mull that to a six with again Double Verdict, but only one source of White and no Blue. I never see my first blue land until T7, and by then a single Obzedat had cleaned my clock. Game two saw him run a Whip out against Blind Obedience, and yes, he did Whip a Desecration Demon into the Obedience. Crackling Perimeter basically dealt over 30 damage to him that game, including a very nice play where I Abrupt Decay my own Gatecreeper Vine to prevent him from getting live off of his Blood Baron, and putting him in range of my Gates. Game three sees him wrung through the Maze.
Round 3 vs Blue/White Control splash Kiora - Win 2-1
My opponent's entire deck was completely foiled out and very pretty. The Maze cares not, however, and both games were decided with a successful run. Both games he stumbled on mana somewhat, but managed to draw out of it, though it was not enough to actually do anything meaningful. He did, however, land two Pithing Needles and a Jace, Memory Adept against me in game 2, but I still won.
Round 4 vs BUG ??? - Win 2-0
My opponent stumbled on mana game 1, so I simply ground through the Maze with little resistance. Game 2, he flooded out, so I fried him with the Perimeter. I didn't even bother sideboarding between games 1 and 2.
Round 5 vs Esper Devotion - Lose 0-2
I draw 3 lands game 1. That's it. Game two has a 2-land opener with Vine, but I fail to draw my fourth until turn 5 or so, so I get run over by Ephara, Heliod, and Obzedat. We jam a few games afterward, and it was basically a fluke of the RNGesus that I lost, since the matchup is a lot more even than my mana screw would imply. I tilted pretty hard after the match because it essentially knocked me out of contention for T8, but I got over it.
Round 6 vs Jund - Win 2-0
He doesn't really do much meaningful stuff, though I do get hit with a Rakdos Return for my hand around midway through the game. At that point, though, I was already going to town on his life total with Crackling Perimeter. Game 2 sees a similar result, though his misses his Black mana for quite a bit longer that game, and I end up running the Maze to win the game. He did Return me twice that game, though I Riot Controlled the first one, and while the second one knocked me low, I was already on my way to the final Gate for the win.
Played today at my local small town store.. 10 people turn out which is fine with me.
I went 3-1 and made Top 4. They wanted to play it out instead of split 9 packs each but I really had to leave so I could make it to my own birthday party.. They talked me into playing it off. In the Top 4 I had to play against a R/B deck. I beat this guy last week but this week: I won game 1 then he sideboarded in 4 Duress on top of his Thoughtseizes and had some hasty Shredfreaks. He got me on the next 2 games but I still won 6 packs and ripped a Brimaz, King of Oreskos and a Xenagos so I was plenty happy.
Game 1- Somewhat casual player Mono Red. I got him game 1 but he burned and hasted me the next 2 games. 1-2
Game 2- Paired down to a G/W opponent playing Fleecemane,Soldier,Voice deck. Guys, Merciless Eviction was great here. His Lion was indestructable and hexproof and he had a Voice on the table too which would have left a token to a Verdict. But "Exiling all creatures" wiped the board. He was deflated after that because I cleared like 6 creatures off the table I had the continual fogs and board wipes and got my Maze going. I won 2-0
Game 3- Against another more newer player who played B/R Minotaurs with 1 Mogis and some burn. He actually got me on game 1 as I just stalled out bad against some burn and haste. I slapped him around quite a bit on game 2 and then on game 3 I durdled like no other. I had 8 different gates out and still didn't have my Maze. FINALLY, I found my maze (had plenty of fogs and board wipes and D-spheres to keep going) then I pulled a Diabolic Tutor who saved my life by tutoring up 1 fog for 1 turn to allow me to win. 2-1
Game 4- Nervous now because I need the win to make top 4. Um, I totally forgot what I played against but won 2-0
I used 2 Diabolic Tutor in this deck and I loved them. I tutored for my needed Maze a total of twice. I tutored for a fog to win a game where I would have died. And I think I remember tutoring for a board sweep also.
3-1 got me Top 4 which I was stoked about. I ended up 3-2 in the very end but that's okay for now. The decks that I lost to I have beaten before. In the playoff match, I mulliganed on game 2, then drew a Boros Guildgate, 2 fog effects, 1 Riot Control and a verdict or something. NOT GREAT at all but I was not going to 5 cards against haste and duress. So I kept. Didn't work out! LOL but it was more about the draw and the shuffle then it was about the decklist.
This was my second 'test' with Diabolic Tutor and he's staying. Funny thing about the card artwork- I always thought the guy pictured was the tutor. HE is actually being tutored by the dead skeleton head whispering in his ear..
If any of you have tested yet with the tutor, let us know what you think. With him, I Top 4'd
Instant (18)
4 Fog
4 Druid’s Deliverance
4 Defend the Hearth
4 Riot Control
1 Essence Scatter (for use on things like Obzedat, Gary, Ruric Thar and the like)
1 Negate (can switch this out if you'd like to maybe another Essence Scatter or omit completely to go to 60 cards)

I really like that list. Though I run a couple Crackling Perimeter , also thinking of running a couple Blind Obedience for giggles and the extort trigger.

To all the Maze's End players with experience at a decent sized tourney, how important have Negates been? I'm working up a list to start playing at my local store and possibly Star City stuff in my area, and I'm curious how important they are main board. I also kind of want to run Azorius Charms in the board somewhere, maybe over Defend the Hearth. Anywho, this is what I have at the moment

Ive been playing this deck for a good month or two now and i do like negates in my sideboard as a 2 of because in the main board id rather have dedicated things to get me the win faster (card draw, sweepers, fog effects) game 1. As for the Azorious Charm i think its a bad decision, 2 of the 3 modes are relevant and you really want to maximize your cards potential as the game progresses. Thats why fog effects are so good, one card stops several cards (creatures and sometimes direct damage) but AZ charm just one for ones.
EDIT- I would consider Essence Scatter because it stops many problem creatures (except mist cutter) and gods.
I don't advocate running any maindeck countermagic, considering it's not catch-all. Would rather keep it in the side and bringing it as needed, to compliment your normal suite of answers.
Had an idea I wanted to pass by you guys. Instead of something in the sideboard to deal with Enchantments/artifacts once (like Wear/Tear), has anybody considered maybe putting in a Vraska instead? It destroys things, it lets you do it over and over again (especially if you're fogging to protect her), and it also gives you an alternate win condition with the Assassin tokens if you want it. I don't know if anybody else has thought of this before, but I think she might be worth a try.

I just rolled through game day after I threw a list together based on what I saw around here...
Observations:
Mono U and Mono B (if they run Gary's and don't get cute w. a W splash for Baron's) are pretty tough. Esp if they play smart and don't over-commit.. Most FnM players and bad players will do that against Turbo-Fog decks..
If I won the die roll and in the top 8 (i was a high seed), I exclusively was on the draw. You -need- extra cards bc if you miss a land drop, you're probably hosed.
For this reason I ran 2 Frost Breaths. They're really good and are basically a time-walk during that attack after you wrath / verdict.
Also the deck -needs-... NEEDS 3-4 Divinations.. I'd always run 4. You need card draw. Kiora is better than Evolution also. Crackling Perimeter is pretty crappy. Slaughter Games in the sb is good tech against Mono B (for Gary and only bc the deck is so popular). I ran zero shock lands and zero Bow's (bc it just seems... bad). I tried Courser and it was awful (Divination is just better). Also ran a Thespian's Stage and it was the nuts.
I def feel that I could pilot this thing 7-8 rounds w. an X-2. But make no illusions about the deck. Mono U against a pilot w. a brain is going to be hard and Mono B against a pilot with a brain is going to be harder. Everything else is def favorable... Too bad Mono B is probably the best and most popular deck around...
Monoblue is not very difficult. The only problem is that they sb some counters in the second game (so you have to do the same). I do not understand how kiora may be better than urban evolution, its a 4 mana explore cantrip most of the times. While I do like divination I prefer to run 3 Prophetic prisms instead, they draw one less card but they fix your manabase and you play it on your second turn (3 prims + 4 urban evolution).
I also like the slaughter games tech against monoblack as our "hopeful win card". Crackling perimeter isnt the best card right now (too much enchant hate) but is definitely a must for control matchups and maybe against RG planeswalkers.
I dont understand what is the idea behind thespian's stage, can you explain it?

I imagine the thespian stage just turned into whatever land he needed, or acted as an extra copy of maze's end?

XWU KCI Eggs
XBRG Lantern Control
I imagine the thespian stage just turned into whatever land he needed, or acted as an extra copy of maze's end?
