So for the past two days I have been testing Gatecrash cards and decks to figure out what cards have been pulling there weight, what cards have not been pulling there weight, and which card has been utterly surprising. This is my own opinion, but would appreciate other opinions as well.
Great Cards
Boros Wreckoner - Yeah, OMG is this card utterly amazing. Just makes deciding to block him or attack into him an utter nightmare. I have played against it and played with in my my Boros Deck wins deck and I am very impressed with this card
Aetherize - I have both played with and played against this card and it has been awesome, especially in tempo based decks. On top of that if you are playing against a blue mage, and they have 4 mana up, you often hesitate attacking with every creature you have because you do not want to get blown out.
Consuming Aberration - Initially my friend and I only wanted 2 in his U/B mill deck and upon playing with him we always wanted to draw into him. He gets out of hand REAL fast, and can dodge some of the better instant speed removal. Only really drawback is he has no evasion.
Boros Charm - This charm is what everyone is making it out to be. In my aggro based decks there is never a time I do not want this card in my hand. It allows you to attack aggressively, it gives you some late game reach, and it can turn a harmless attacker into a huge threat.
Obzedat, Ghost Council - Yeah I knew this guy was good, I did not however think he was going to be THAT good. Control decks are going to have a hard time with this guy, unless they got instant speed removal. He is an absolute beating, and a nightmare to try to remove.
Blind Obedience - Quickly becoming the card I hate more than anything in this set. It is super effective and slows down a ton of super fast decks. The Extort on him is just icing on the cake.
Dimir Charm - To me, this card and Azorious Charms is what is going to make Control decks viable. They are both terrific at what they do in that all three modes are useful.
Underperforming Cards
Lazav, Dimir Mastermind - In a lot of match ups he is just so Mehh. Horrible against weenie decks that have no creatures you really want to copy. Most of the time he is just a 3/3 with hexproof.
Master Biomancer - Its because he does nothing when he hits the field, that you never get to benefit from him. He removal bait like nobodies buisness. I had high hopes for this guy but so far he has been mehh.
Every Single Card with Cipher - In my experience they are Really overcosted, and do not work with decks they would work best with. To me just something I have not been impressed with so far.
Surprise Cards
Burning-Tree Emissary - I thought this card might be good, but this card leads to so many explosive plays it is stupid. Nothing feels better than already having Champion of the parish on the field, Casting this, then casting lightning mauler and attacking for 7 on turn 2. Even better when you can chain two of them together into another creature after words. Yes causes you to overextend, but in those types of decks you were going to over extend anyways.
Orzhov Charm - I knew this card in Modern was going to be ridiculous, and even though it only has really 1 mode that is used heavily in Standard, it is still probably the best early game removal spell in standard right now. It is two mana instant speed removal with a draw back of you losing life, but often times is used in decks that can gain that life back. It hits, literrally everything that is not indestructible, or has hexproof. Not as great as Azorius Charm, Dimir Charm, Boros Charm, Simic Charm or Selesnya charm becaue all three of its modes is not going to be used as often, but still very very good and surprising
Frontline Medic - Again I knew this card would be good, but I did not predict how often I would be attacking with 3 or more plus creatures on turn 3.
High Priest of Penance - Another card I am really beginning to hate. Again knew it would be good, did not however predict it to be as effective as it was at 2 for 1ing opponents or holding your opponents back from attacking.
