Sounds like you've been playing a long time. Me? Since Revised. I've seen this game take more turns than a bumper car at an amusement park. A lot to respond to but I'll just make a few short points. Well, kind of short.
Since this is the Standard sub forum, I'll try to keep most of my response relevant to Standard.
Draw-Go, counterspell.dec, whatever you want to call it, there's a place for that. It's called Vintage and Legacy.
That's all I'll say on that subject except that a fast Goblin Vintage deck tears up counterspell.dec. One Lackey with no FoW and it's pretty much game over.
Okay, moving on.
Magic is a business. It took me a long time to understand that and accept that, which is kind of strange because I'm a businessman myself. Been one running my own online business for over 10 years.
The ONLY thing that matters is making a profit. As mercenary as that might sound, it's true. If WotC doesn't do that, there's no game.
Okay, so how do they make a profit?
They give the "vocal" majority of the player base what they want.
Well, it just so happens that most of their income comes from the current sets and Standard Constructed and Limited. There's no debating or arguing this. That's their bread and butter.
Over the years, the tastes of the vocal majority have changed. They made it quite clear that there were certain aspects of this game that they hated.
At the top of the list?
Counterspells
Land Destruction
Card Discard
Mill
In short, anything that didn't allow them to play their spells, either because the were countered, had their lands destroyed so they couldn't play them, had them removed from their hand, or just flat out took them out of their library. Or any combination of the above.
This was declared to be "unfun" Magic.
So WotC did something about it. Today, we see the above in either very limited or weakened quantities. Counterspells in Standard TODAY are almost unplayable. In fact, my Bant Control deck, which does very well, runs ZERO counters main board and only a few Negate sideboard to go up against other control decks when they play something that can seriously hurt me. I also run Nevermore to keep cards like Slaughter Games from being played.
THIS is the new control. The days of Draw-Go in Standard are over. I'm not thrilled about it, but if I want this game to thrive (and it is thriving) then I'll deal with the wants of the vocal majority.
For people who want that "other" kind of Magic that we had back during Revised/4th/Ice Age/Urza's "what the hell were they thinking" Saga and beyond, there is Vintage and Legacy. And even in Legacy, some of those cards are flat out banned (I'm looking at you Tinker, Tolarian Academy, Yawgmoth's Will, Yawgmoth's Bargain, et al.)
Standard is what it is. It's a limited card pool to begin with so there are only so many archetypes you can stuff into it even if they all were loved. In order to have them all represented and viable, you'd need sets the size of Time Spiral and bigger. A longer rotation time would be nice, but like some have said, then we've just got Extended again. So this is what we have to play with.
Is it great? No. But it's not horrible either. There are many different decks and even if Draw-Go and Prison isn't viable, we have control decks and some interesting builds. Pillow Fort is not a bad little monster and can be quite frustrating while at the same time fair. OmniDoor is a hoot to play.
For what my opinion's worth, and granted I'm just a casual FNM player, I'm fine with this Standard. If I want a more diverse format, I'll play Legacy.
This thread is very sad. It has broken down into players attacking counter spells and others defending them.
Counter spells, blue mages, Timmy, Johnny and Spike... They all have nothing to do with the discussion of whether standard is actually fun or not. Idk why people clench so tightly to the idea that people only play 1 kind of deck throughout the diverse space that is magic... But whatever.
Counter spells are important to the game. Deal with it. What is less important are catch all counter spells, which are less fair to players who want to play their spells. Deal wit it.
All this bickering shows what takes the fun out of diversity such as what we have. I hate when a game is lost when some small play that is not really game ending, randomly ends the game as consistently as it seems to happen. I then express that to those who are interested in knowing what I think about the meta game, perhaps the player I just lost to. They then slant me saying something to the effect that blue mages do not always get what they want, and despite me playing a GWR deck, they seem to think all I want to do is make sure they don't have any fun...
This is what magic is becoming. A bunch of players that seem to think that since I am competetive, that I hate losing. When that is simply not the case, and from here intel event discussion breaks down into attack after attack. Shame on all of you.
I'm torn at to whether I like this standard or not. I feel like although the amount of viable deck types are great, the actual cardpool is limited. Thragtusk may be the savior of Standard but it feels degeneratly splash-able and too often the best answer to too many situations.
I'd also have liked to see Stonerain at 1RR, but really just to see how it would effect the game, not to it actually being a good idea.

When I started this thread I did not expect this kind of vehement hate of the format, because everybody I play with and talk to about the standard environment loves it and we range from competitive (Me) to casual.
I agree with you it is a goddamn shame that we can never have a middle ground with players. No matter what, someone hates the format for whatever reason and I find that kind of ridiculous.
I do not run counter spells in my decks, but I understand the importance of counterspells to a meta. Do I feel Cavern of Souls has hurt standard? No. But no matter what I say to argue for or against counterspells, people are always going to complain about them. They cause as much derision as Land Destruction. Knowing that, can't we for once leave them out of a discussion knowing how the discussion is going to deteriorate.
Counter spells you either love them or hate them, but how in the hell does that have anything to do with how open the format is right now.
This is the matter at hand right now. I love standard right now. One of the best standard environments I have ever played in. You can agree with it or not, thats fine, but please for the love all that is good in magic, stop turning this into a whine fest.

Yea, those are MTG Bars. What can I say, I am a dork
I've got a story I'd like to add, our usual FNM organizer was playing OmniDoor Thragfire last week -
At the end of the night he told us about how he'd pumped his Rhox Faithmender with a Kessig Wolf Run on an empty board to a beautiful +8/+0 gaining a swift 18 life in the process.
This was literally the best play I've heard this season.
I had an Omnidoor player do this against my RDW at FNM. But the next turn I attacked with Hound of Griselbrand souldbonded with Stonewright for 16 damage right back ;).

This is a prime example of how swingy the format is. While it is cool plays like this can happen, it is a damn shame the first one was not a game ender as consistently as it should be. It is also a damn shame that all your play did was negate his last one. Plays like this, that are so absurd, should be ending games with consistency when they happen. They don't.
Counter spells you either love them or hate them, but how in the hell does that have anything to do with how open the format is right now.
I neither love them nor hate them. They just are.
How that applies to the format is well, the whole "Design space" thing we were discussing, was/is relevant to that.

Kamahl, I can't get a pin on what it is you think would make the game less "Swingy" as you call it. Is it just the fact that there are powerful cards? Haven't there always been powerful game swinging cards. Armageddon, Wrath, fact or fiction, persecute. . .
You might be on to something but I'm just unclear on the specifics of your complaint.

Fallen Empires was my first pack. I agree with you on the changes, the only reason I didn't call it draw-go is because I just came back and I'm not sure its a term that gets used very much anymore.

Nice posts midnight_v & Landboysteve !
Thanks LeoninKha.
I guess I've spent my life loving this game, for all the ins and outs and ups and downs of it. I can't for the life of me understand why someone could look at this standard and say "this sucks" so early in the season.
Thanks LeoninKha.

I've actually answered this question for you in detail in another post but can't for the life of me remember which one or even if it's in this thread.
So here's the TL;DR version of it.
Essentially, there are various types of metas that players look for. I think I listed 4 or 5. Don't remember. Because those metas are all so vastly different from each other, they obviously can't please everybody.
As a glaring example, the player who wants just 1 or 2 dominant decks so he can either play one of them or build a deck to specifically hate on them, isn't going to be pleased with the meta that isn't "solved" so to speak.
Conversely, the person who enjoys what we have now isn't going to be happy with Caw-Blade/Valakut or Delver/WRR or whatever the 2 or 3 decks were.
You'll never make everybody happy in this game. And because of the nature of people in general, those who are content with the status quo will generally keep their mouths shut while those who are unhappy with it will voice their displeasure. That's why it always seems that there is more whining than praise because the whiners are simply more vocal.
It has taken me a long time but I simply shrug off the whining now. I'll respond to it here, but I won't get all bent out of shape over it like I used to. It's just not worth it. Besides, it's out of my hands anyway. If enough people are dissatisfied with the current state of Standard and make their dissatisfaction know to WotC, WotC WILL do something about it, as they've done in the past (banning Jace, SFM, Necro, etc.) and the problem will be solved. If enough people don't complain and attendance remains good and sales remain high, then nothing will be done and life will go on.
In the meantime, I'll still have my LGS to go to for FNM and I'll still get to play with a bunch of great guys who don't give a hoot what cards are in or not in Standard because they truly love this game, and I'll ultimately have fun playing a game I've played for 19 years now.
And if I'm fortunate enough to find a Legacy thing going on (went to one a couple of weeks ago) then that's gravy on my turkey.
I'm sorry if there are those who are unhappy with the state of Standard, but it's unavoidable given you CAN'T please everybody.
But maybe if they looked at the good instead of the bad, they just might actually have fun right now.
Personally, I can't say I'm crazy about the format these days. But that's my opinion. I still play standard, though. And I make it a point of not whining every chance I get. For me I see it as a challenge to make something work within the parameters I give myself (playing within the colors that I enjoy.) Am I bothered at the lack of aggressive/powerful counters? Yes. Do I sincerely want spot removal that is at least on par with Doom Blade? More than anything. Do I make do with what I have because there are still some really cool cards in the format and on the horizon? I do. It can be frustrating, but if you enjoy the game enough I think it's worthwhile. At the end of the day, it's just that: a game. If you aren't having fun I'd look elsewhere for entertainment. And if you've invested too much into Magic to feel comfortable doing so there are plenty of other options. Modern is fun, Legacy is rather steep investment, and given a good group of friends EDH is tough to beat. Nobody will ever force you to play standard.

I sincerely believe everyone on here is capable of being polite and respectful to one another. You don't just think that, it is a fact. As if you have revealed some obfuscated truth. How many times do people have to point out the obvious then bloviate how horrible it is?
If you don't like rotation, don't play standard, but don't say that this standard is terrible and compare it to pre-rotation previous standard. That **** irks like no other.
It is in fact, quite delectable how diverse this standard is compared to .... all the previous standards I've played in post-rotation (since Shards of Alara). If you don't like this standard for the above reasons, you'll never like any standard. Might I recommend you would be more content and happy with modern or legacy? (Or maybe not because Modern is mostly Jund and the same Combo decks...)
I never said I hated this format. It can just be more than it is now. My post was meant as a comparison, not the end all, be all of truths about standard.
Gate Crash has added allot of new and interesting cards to the pool, and hopefully it will make decks much more diverse than they are now.
I do play both modern and legacy, and I enjoy them for different reasons than standard.

Boros Charm really does seem that good, but we'll see for sure after it's seen actual play. Cards like Sphinx's and Thragtusk are obviously very powerful. They can be difficult to beat but ultimately AREN'T unbeatable. That fact that decks exist that don't use them is proof. They're very good but nothing really needs to be done about them IMO. Geist is definitely a good card, but I don't think he's insane. Just remember he isn't unblockable.
FRAM knows what its about. you can not love a format and still not be annoying and *****y and try to ruin everyone else's fun.
In addition - good cards are good. It is nearly inconceivable that you could create a format without dominant cards. Play them or play to beat them, but they will always exist.
Yeah, I suppose you guys are right that this Standard is terrible. After all, this "accessibility" and "variety" junk is really kind of annoying. I paid $250 for that Bant deck, people should be scooping in homage before the game starts. These filthy casuals with their omnisicences and cheap-as-dirt Stromkirk Nobles are really cramping my style. Stupid people with their stupid aggro and stupid red cards-why do they even print red? It's so dumb! I long for the good old days when you could go to a Grand Prix and expect to see over $3000 worth of maindecked Jace, the Mind Sculptors among the Top Eight. There always needs to be a very expensive One Deck to Rule them All, after all, it's what keeps the uninitiated at bay, and that's what's fun, right?
Seriously, though, I love the fact that I can brew up a semi-janky Chalice of Life/Faithmender deck for $50 and go better than .500 in FNM with it. I love the fact that Door to Nothingness has seen play, I love that I can build a deck specifically to dodge the sideboard hate that exists in dominant archetypes, I love the openness of this Standard. I love the fact that the "dominant cards" are a draw engine (far from oppressive by itself) and a pair of pushed but far-from-unanswerable five-drops. Even the absurd powercreeps (Geist, Stalker, Cavern) have been held in check. The only people who have cause to complain are netdeckers; people who homebuild for fun are loving this, because there are so absurdly many decks that are at least Tier 2.
